is it a bit mean, to not let my dd age2 to have any charater clothes?

everytime we go shopping she always wants an iggle piggle tshirt or upsey daisy wellies that kind of thing.

personally i don't really like them that much

however

on one hand she would love them.

on the other she might start being a nightmare if say i brought her one or two things, only wanting them on and i can see it causing trantrums, as she does has some uspey daisy jimjams which she hates taking off, so she hasn't worn them for a while.

Yes you're being a bit mean . DD is 19 months and I was dead against character clothing. But she adores the Night Garden and her Upsy Daisy t shirt makes her so happy. We haven't had any tantrums yet over clothes although God knows she's perfecting them for other things . It's the first step in choosing their own clothing. It'll get worse before it gets better

If she particularly wants them I think perhaps you are a little mean. I don't much care for them either but DS#2 has a whole load of Scooby Doo stuff as he loves it. I would never buy them if he didn't ask.

Yes a bit mean.

My DD loves her Fifi and Lola tops and is hankering after a Dora towel next! I don't think it does her any harm and can encourage her to get dressed when she is having a slight strop!

Not being mean in the slightest. Character clothing is usually more expensive, worse quality and not particularly nice to look at (but then I'm rather anti-commercialisation of children).

Well , I do not wether you are BU or not. I must say I have never given it a second thought. I am dead set against stupid slogans like "Naughty boy"...though so I sort of see your point.

I remember having a rant about Bratz dolls and someone on her pointed out that it's me projecting my preferences on my child and if she really likes them and has the choice at birthdays etc then is it fair to not let her have them because I don't like them? Still undecided on that one!

I don't buy my DS character clothing. I'm just not a big fan of it and as he doesn't ask for it i don't buy it.

I don't mind character pyjamas or socks and pants. He has all of those, and he has character bedding and cups/plate/bowl.

I wouldn't cause a fuss if someone else bought him character clothes though.

dh thinks it's mean too, he said to me the other day when dd saw a fimble tshirt, oh get her one she would love it.

suppose i'm just concerrned she will only want that sort of stuff all the time if i let any in the house!
and anything to avoid tantrums on days when she can't wear what she wants.

not mean but the odd character top can come in handy when you need them to get dressed in a hurry

sucessfully avoided character clothing until upsy daisy top received as a present - DD loved it! I have hidden the fifi t shirt we got as it was vile.

really dislike characters on knickers eg bratz or high school musical on knickers for 2 year old

I let DD have ITNG clothing (though mainly underwear). She also has a hello kitty tshirt and a Miffy one. And Thomas the tank engine socks.

I like her to have some say in the clothes I buy for her, after all she has to wear them. But I have to draw the line a some point, otherwise ALL her clothes would have bloody Upsy Daisy on

Ds has only got character pants and a pair of Fireman Sam pyjamas. No slogan stuff either. He doesn't seem to mind and he's 3

I compromise by buying character pyjamas.

DS is 3 but doesn't really ask for it anyway.

I don't like character clothing, twice the price for usually crap quality.

i have thought perhaps i should just go shopping alone or online only, i wouldn't be so bothered if i thought one day she would wear what she wanted, charater stuff then when we are going somewhere what i want.

but i think, i know what she will be like.

i might dig those daisy jimjams out and see what she's like with them now, it's just a pain in the morning when she doesn't want to take her jimjams off, then its a big tantrum 1st thing in the morning, not really what you want to start the day off!

perhaps i will get her some socks and plates and bowls etc that she will like for now and keep avoiding it for a bit longer, until she old enough to be reasoned with.
ie you pick today i pick tomorrow

dh said she probably end up wearing winnie the pooh clothes when shes 50 if i don't let her now. lol

I used to worry about this and then I realised it didn't matter.

I have to get him something to wear so it might as well be what he likes.

Bit of a hard arse about tantrums though. Mostly DS chooses what he wants to wear these days but if I need him in something then that is what he is wearing. Tough shit if he doesn't like it. He can scream if he likes. Never understood trying to avoid tantrums.

I don't buy them for her (overpriced, she is an ebay econo-baby)
no-one buys them as presents

actually I am not sure she knows character clothing exists

no she must, other kids wear it to nursery, and she does point out the farking Tombliboos on clothes in sainsbury's (never take her to Mothercare, which is a veritable hotbed)

but she has never complained that her clothes aren't character ones

My DD is nearly 3 and most of her clothes are character free except for pants. She doesn't really seem to mind. She has a lot of DS's old pyjamas - Buzz Lightyear, cowboys and things, and likes them. But overall she isn't too bothered, for now. I wouldn't mind her having them if she wanted character clothes though.

DS on the other hand, is 4, and nearly always wears Ben 10/Spiderman/Dr Who type of stuff. He'll be in school uniform soon enough so its only fair he gets to choose what he wears (most of the time. As Mummy, I reserve the right to veto an outfit).

It can all be a bit naff but then again if I realise he is in top to toe Boden that makes me feel like some sort of pretentious yummy mummy wannabee too, so I have given up being bothered about it.

I get a fair amount of DS's character stuff from charity shops which stops me from feeling like we have been ripped off and sucked into the commerciality of it all.

DD would love to wear charachter clothes (or at least those with writing on). I can't bear slogans, charachters or advertising so won't buy them. She is in the middle of where young girls clothes stop and older ones start, so, understandably she doesn't want to look babyish, but osme of the older stuff is horrid. Lots of lace and sequins, glitter sparkle and general tat. We have a limited choice in Switzerland so she either looks like a clone of every other child at her school `(H+M, C&A, Migros) or we go for the more expensive Zara option and she destroys it. Can't win.

thanks for your thoughts and suggestions, i will think it over.

i realise it's not really that important.

i will probably try to put her off these clothes for as long as i can,even if i do feel a bit mean, however wouldn't be suprised if dh brought her something.

i will get dd some nice bowls and socks to ease my guilt slighty!
and just see how it goes.

DS picks both, he's always picked his own clothes from an early age as he loves clothes shopping and I like him having his own individual tastes rather than them being my tastes. Luckily he hates slogan clothing so 90% of what he picks I probably would choose for him anyway.

I get your point about wanting to avoid tantrums but you might find that you DD fixates on a particular item of clothing anyway, regardless of whether it has characters or not.

DS has very little character clothing (apart from some Mr Men stuff as he has the same name as one of the Mr Men and I can't resist!) but he's got a t-shirt with some robots on and that's the one he asks for, every single day. Hasn't tantrummed about it yet, but I can see it coming, especially as the t-shirt is getting too small...

I think it depends where you shop. Sainsburys do packs of 3 Thomas/Percy/James T-shirts for £8 and they're good quality. Primark is also great for character Pjs cheap. And H&M kids do some fab, great quality, even woollen Cars/Lightening McQueen stuff (can you tell I have boys?!)

DS1 loves getting dressed in the mornings - he's always picking to wear his "Bob" t-shirt or his Cars ones. I have to disagree about them being worse quality too - most of the bits we have got are still twice as nice as ordinary clothing, and they've been washed and worn 5 times more!

So YABU - who does it hurt, especially if it brings a smile to your DC's face when they're wearing it?

DS knows that at our 'ome we don't wear clothes with writing on! The very idea!

However pyjamas are a different matter and plates, cups, knives, forks, toys......books, paper......

I do prefer him to wear non branded clothing but I wouldn't fight it big time; he's the type of boy who simply doesn't notice what he's wearing, i tend to put out a top for him and he sticks it on without even looking at it so I guess I have it easy. But basically I don't like branded stuff but don't think it's worth a big fuss over if they really want it. They're going to want tombliboos/fifi for such a short amount of time. Childhood goes fast.
