DP's parents have a tiny flat that they rent out to people for holidays, we found out that it's free for a week in September.

Trying to work out if we could afford to go, we looked up flights and found there were some very cheap ones. It's a slightly in the middle of nowhere so there isn't a choice of airlines/departure airports.

Skip to today: DP had asked his boss about getting time off (a bit of a formality really, he doesn't have the sort of job where a certain number of people have to be there all the time, and he hasn't taken any holiday for ages), and now the flights are £110 more expensive.

It's not fair.

Now I can't decide if we should go or not. I wish we hadn't looked before, and we could just make the decision based on the cost that it is now, withut knowing that it woud have been £110 cheaper if we had booked last night.

If you are only paying for the flights, then it is still a cheap holiday.

You didn't book it last night so now the previous price is irrelevant. If today's price was the first one you saw, would you have thought it reasonable, expensive, etc.

You need to make a decision based on todays price. And hurry up about it or it might have gone up some more

That's the problem, I can't make my head do the calculation of 'can we afford it' without going 'well we could have afforded it much better yesterday'. Which is why I have to come on here and whine. Sorry fo being pathetic.

Flights, car hire, petrol, parking at airport. Plus the wine budget of course!

Just get on and book it woman. You know you want to. Then look at "full price" flights and convince yourselves that today's price is a bargain beyond all compare

Get a lift to the airport (or a bus) and you will have 'recovered' the hypothetical £110.

Trains plus taxi to the train station = same cost at parking at the airport (only about £35). Recovering the hypothetical £110 is more work than that unfortunately

How shall I be less sensible? Shall I claim that since I was willing to book it last night DP should pay the extra? That would be unreasonable and childish. 'It's all his fault....'

Actually I meant the whole working out whether you can afford it process - as opposed to just going for it come what may (and I don't mean it really - I am in fact slightly in awe of your sensibleness)

..but go ahead and blame DP for being so bleeding responsible and waiting to check with his boss if it will make you feel better

He has said I can decide as sun makes more of a difference to my happiness than to his. I think this means we are going (and therefore not doing anything much any weekends until then).

Yes, booked it last night! I am now not looking at Ryanair website ever again (until I next want to book something anyway).

Pay to wee, that sort of thing? Ryanair are the only people who fly there, unless we want to drive to Manchester to go with someone else. (we don't)

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of 'I'm sorry, madam, your baggage appears to be 2.5mg over the limit - please pay us £70.'

Point taken re the lack of choice though. Manchester's quite a trek from here.

I have scales - and a big handbag - last time I brought back wine by putting nearly all my clothes into my hand luggage, leaving only enough to wrap the wine in the suitcase. (much easier in the days when you could just put the wine in your handbag)

And thanks to this thread, I finally got our holiday booked. The thought of the price going up got me moving. We are off to Disneyland in Feb.

Oh, then you are really lucky to have got a decent price with Ryanair, they are often really expensive when you book late.

I had a bottle of wine break in my suitcase once. Not pretty.

MrMouse had better not release any new deals. Actually, it was under 12s free and one day/night free so I can't see it going down any further. 3 nights/4 days for £460 is ok, isn't it?

Ryanair are OK as long as you accept it will be like travelling in a cattle truck.

I travelled Liverpool to Murcia with them about 2 years ago with dcs - at the time 7 and 4. Had to pay for priority boarding (most other airlines do this for free if you are travelling with under 5s). Then found that "priority boarding" means you get a 2 minute head start in the general sprint towards the plane, which was about 100 yards from the terminal building. I kid you not, we could literally see the dust rising as the following party of passengers charged towards us! we literally had to RUN to the plane!

Anyway, not really a problem for you as you are not travellings with dcs. Just watch out for the catches and read all the fine print!

Nope, Stansted is close to us, Manchester is most definitely not. I am willing to embrace poor treatment by Ryanair since they are the only people who will take us in a plane from somewhere near to where we live to somewhere near to where we want to be (and we are both able-bodied adults).

It had to be last-minute as the owners would obviously rather rent out the place to someone who will pay, we can only have it if it's not booked up.
