To think that people really cant afford school uniforms?

I realise that affording a lot of things for many people is not easy. But one girl in dds class is always getting into trouble for not wearing uniform. Just thinking about this as dd1 is about to go back to school. I have kitted her out for next to nothing (Asda are selling skirts for £3) The girl in dd1's class is always wearing designer trainers etc.....is it genuinely a case of not being able to afford the uniform...what do you think...AIBU??

Maybe someone else, nanny etc buys her the trainers etc.

people have different priorities. i like uniform for various reasons, mainly, coz its so cheap. during the summer holidays, my kids need more clothes, and theyre more expensive as well.but term time, all they wear is school uniform, and its dead cheap. themost expensive items are the clarks shoes. still cheaper than the number of shoes they need in the summer.

Sounds like it is a case of priorities.

School uniform is not more expensive that ordinary clothes, even with school logos.

Some people just resent being told what to wear.

I relise that school uniforn ahs come done so much in cost the past few years BUT
When my ds's were young and i had recently split for Ex H i quite literally had to decide which to buy.....socks or food.
I choose food and my ds1 wore manky holed socks untill the next amount of money came in.
I dont think you are BU but i think you could have a little more empathy.

i hate hate hate it when primary children get in trouble for not wearing uniform.

its not like THEY go out and buy it.

the teachers should speak to the mother instead of this third person bullshit.

i think primary clothes are reasonable - if you can get to a big store.

shoes on the other hand (decent ones) maybe not

when you get to secondary - you have twins - they want £40 for blazers....EACH as well as the SCHOOL jumper with SCHOOL logo

thats when you start to wonder whether uniform is ( as i have always argued it was) a leveller of sorts for children

or whether its a money making exercise for the school

If you have children, you are responsible for clothing them - twins or not.

Good point Custardo. It is crap that the kids get in trouble for it. Although I know this girl has had letters home so makes me wonder why any parent would let their dc get in the same trouble time and time again.

Sorry, I don't believe it. There are very very few people who cannot afford to buy a uniform that will mean the child is clothed for the best part of a year. If it is a genuine case of hardship, then crisis loans do exist.

differentim you can only get crisis loans if you are on benefit cant you?
It is possible to struggle to afford uniform whilst working and not recieving benefits...

no they dont do uniform grants for primary children if your on low incomeas apparently its not compulsary and for senior school if you cna get one is 50 quid every 2 years but my area not give them either.

Think troube is when you got more than one dc i have 2 lots of senior uniforms to buy costing around £200 quid each plus 2 primary uniforms , ye si will struggle and ye sthey will have even if means going without and no i dont smoke , drink or have a social life

our school doesn't require any logo stuff. you can get it, and for us we did buy some logo stuff because DD1 likes it.

but because they don't require it it really is very cheap.

as cheap as any normal clothes.

my feeling is that about 90% of people who complain they 'can't afford' school uniform could afford it but resent spending the money on it. which is a bit mad as their kids are going to be wearing it 5 days a week and it's usually much cheaper than equivalent weekend clothes.

about 10% of people who complain genuinely are too poor to afford uniform as they cannot afford ANYThing and for them i'm

and i think the exaggerations of the first group of people belittles the genuine plight of the second group.

ps ds will be wearing trainers to school when he starts but then again all I can get to fit over his AFO
