Good parenting only goes so far and peer pressure becomes very important. I am lucky in that my DSs have, what I would class, as nice friends. It is all too easy to get in with the wrong crowd. I am also lucky in that they have similar characters to mine-it isn't so easy if you have a DC who likes risk taking and danger.
I know many a parent who has been very smug about their parenting skills because DC1 has been such a credit to them and then they get DC2, who is completely different and sees rules as a challenge-to be broken!

DS#1 is 12 and wants a paper-round already. I suspect when he realises he needs to be up at stupid o'clock the idea will become less appealing

LOLOLO at DS#1 running fast ATM he favours a sort of big-man lope that just looks as if his shoes are too big. But here's hoping.

Part-time jobs are not easy to find for under-16s (not sure there are any near us) and not that easy to find for 16-18yo either.

It has taken my DS 2 years and countless letters, application forms and interviews to get a part time job. It isn't that easy. When I was that age I just walked up the high street asking if they had any Saturday jobs and they either said yes or no. They asked which school you went to and that was all. Connexions asked if DS wanted help with his CV, this was just to stack supermarket shelves or wash up-I don't think I even knew what a CV was at that age!! For a part time seasonal job at Christmas he did an hour's group selection test interview, got through that and had a second, one to one, interview but didn't get it. There were 20 at the first interview and 2 jobs. Pizza Hut had far more than that for one job!
To be fair to teens it is difficult these days.
If they want a paper round a weekly free paper is a good place to start-just once a week in the afternoon.
