Why oh why do i have to endure a load of teenagers hanging about on the pitch black field, laughing + talking (loudly) at 20 past 3 in the morning. I just wanna sleep AIBU.

If they are 14-17 drinking outside in a field will be illegal. Yes that is what we should be encouraging them to do.

TheCrackFox · 08/08/2009 18:00

I was thinking that too BitofFun. If I had tried that stunt my mum would have been down to the park and fetched me herself.

Mezley · 08/08/2009 18:00

Whether they are outside or inside teenagers will experiment with alcohol (or other less palatable substances. Just keeping them in wouldn't stop them. Sorry we are off the point a bit here

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/08/2009 18:03

I would not want my teenager hanging around outside til 3am. I am usually that poor bugger of a parent who has several shrieking teenage girls for sleepovers (they are up whispering and giggling until beyond 3am!) but at least they are inside.

Greensleeves is right, though, youth club provision is crap around here, and there are very few places that teens can go. The skate park for instance has been commandeered by pissheads. Luckily dd is still young (13) and doesn't go hanging around parks - she still has organised activities like sports, however she does hang round in a pack of girls on Saturday afternoons in Cheltenham. But she would not be out in the dark with her friends, not at this age.

TheCrackFox · 08/08/2009 18:03

Teenagers will experiment with alcohol but if they are unsupervised until 3am they will get alot more down their necks.

Their bodies aren't ready for vast amounts of boozing.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/08/2009 18:15

Keeping them inside would also stop them annoying other peopel with their inconsiderate behaviour.

I think a lot of the time its lazy parenting. Its easier to give in to your kid's demands of being allowed to go out, rather than saying no.

PixiNanny · 08/08/2009 18:20

I agree with OP. I'm 20 and was only in that age group a few years ago. I definately remember being treated like a yob and called all things under the sun, however when me and my mates went out on the booze-up or to chat we hung out away from houses and where we wouldn't cause trouble. If we started fires (for BBQs, you know how teen boys get with fire though ) we done it well away from civilisation, etc. It's a matter of respecting the area and the people who live there, and unfortunately, teens have a bad name because many of them don't care, and the few who do care are often the ones in trouble for it.

I'm not sure where i said they wouldn't, i was one once after all.

Letting them roam the streets at that time of the morning isn't going to help with teenage relations is it.

Mezley · 08/08/2009 18:28

It would be hard to generalise Stripy but I agree that there is a lot of lazy parenting out there. I work in a school and am constantly appalled by the way children (even very young ones) talk to their parents and are allowed to. We need a new thread for this one. Wanna start one Stripy lol

BitOfFun · 08/08/2009 18:38

Mezley, I always say that I am not running a democracy in my house, more of a benign dictatorship

Mezley · 08/08/2009 18:39

LOL

juuule · 08/08/2009 18:52

I don't think anyone noticed your post Maryz.

Also op hasn't said what ages the 'teenagers' are. Are they 13 or 19 or older but behaving younger? Is it only happening because it's holidays or is it ongoing? Do they live locally? I would have thought if it's a regular thing then the police could do something about it.

And 3am in the morning on a regular basis would annoy me too.

Tiredmumno1 · 08/08/2009 19:24

It is on a regular basis, and they are between 13 + 16 approx, sometimes there can be up to ten of them, sometimes more. Not to sure if they are local, its so overpopulated here i wouldnt have a clue, its just so annoying. And good on you pixinanny for having the brains to be considerate to others, see i said not all teens are bad. But they do know right from wrong, i get bored sometimes being stuck in, but it doesnt mean i am about to go out til some ghastly time, + wreak havoc on the neighbourhood. I would have been grounded for life if i done this sort of thing when i was younger, + i am glad my mum had the rules + discipline in place, otherwise you just dont learn.

so they are considerate enough to take their noise into a field....not the middle of the street then. thats something, isnt it. but no. it wont be. cos when you're on a hate campaign then you can drip feed onto the thread to your hearts content.

kitkatqueen · 09/08/2009 00:28

When I was a kid the local field was reputed to be haunted so no-one went there after dark.... Bugger, they got us with that one didn't they...

Tiredmumno1 · 09/08/2009 01:03

Ilovetiffany - the difference with this field its surrounded by houses, our front doors are even the field side, there are other places a tad further away from the houses, surely that would be more considerate. And why would anyone think it is actually ok for these kids to be out at that time, i am sure they have homes + beds to go to, ready for the next day. Whats wrong with them learning that its behaviour like this thats a bit irresponsible, its all about maturing into adulthood.

I hate my generation - the majority give those of us that actually work hard, respect people, and generally do the best we can such a bad name

However, in defence... There is NOTHING to do, especially if you're not working part time. I do agree that teenagers need to be "tamed", but who's able to do so? Teachers have no control, parents have no control, the police have no control... Its a very sad system

In fact, I don't hate my generation - I'm ashamed of them.

BitOfFun · 09/08/2009 01:11

Most teenagers are great, honestly. I just don't buy the "Nothing to do" defence in this case- there is: SLEEP! Go home fgs!

Tiredmumno1 · 09/08/2009 01:21

Oh thank you for understanding, sometimes i feel like i wanna bang my head against the wall.

OP posts:
Goblinchild · 09/08/2009 08:43

My daughter is a teenager and often goes out with her mates. They try to be considerate and remember noise levels, but it's not easy being a teen because of the continuous prejudice that they receive from a large number of the population. It seems that whatever they do they will be seen as threatening and scary by certain members of the public.
And sleep cycles?
There is significant evidence that they flip for a period of time after puberty. Her natural cycle is to wake at around 1pm and stay awake until 3 or 4am. So she can't sleep at normal times. Just like all those annoying wailing babies in the middle of the night.
I'd go out when the party starts and ask them politely to try and keep the noise down, with a friend or two if I felt intimidated. Just to make them aware of the impact they were having, because it probably hasn't occurred to them that they are being particularly noisy.

duchesse · 09/08/2009 08:48

I'm sorry Goblin, but as a mother of teenagers myself I think that study is twaddle. The reason teenagers "can't sleep" until stupid o'clock am is that they get up at stupid o'clock pm and are therefore not tired enough to sleep until absurd hour of the morning. If they go to bed earlier, they get up earlier, simple. The reason they want to stay up later and sleep later is to evade adult supervision (an understandable reason in itself) and have nothing pressing to be doing at 7am- like a job or school at this time of year.

juuule · 09/08/2009 09:23

Also a mother of teens and agree with Duchesse. They can't sleep at night if they sleep most of the day.

BonsoirAnna · 09/08/2009 09:24

DSS1 goes to the skate park all day - he is on his knees by 9 pm!
