First time on AIBU . so be gentle thanks .
just had cross with H (not going to say DH as he is not ) I have just asked my 10 year old son to topen the oven and to check that something is not burning . I did not ask him to touch the food or the racks in the oven . I just asked him to open the oven door abit to check . My H said that I was stupid and that he could have burnt him self . when is he going to stop babying him

At 10 years old I think that is ok. Has to learn sometime. YANBU

I wouldn't have my 10 year old son open the oven...that blast of hot air you get when you first open it can burn if you are stood too close. He can make a cup of tea because I have taught him how, but ovens are more dangerous imo.

He said that the hot air coming out of the oven could burn him and it would be my fault .

It's only opening a oven,she didn't ask him to stick his head in it YANBU.

he wont let him make a cup of tea in case the hot water may burn him and the kettle is too heavy to pour . So i love I might be wrong then . LOL

My eldest is 8 and I don't let him anywhere near the oven. I have had too many hot blasts on to me that have hurt to allow him to do it.

It depends. If he is used to helping you/bein around the kitchen/is aware to be careful and so on then YANBU. If he is clueless and had no notion that oven=vhot=burns, then YABU.

But either way IMO, 10 is old enough to learn to cook simple things, make tea etc.At 10 I could make a simple meal for 3 people without burning myself or the house down.

I could bake cakes and make a deliciously light choux pastry by that age

I would test the cakes with a knife to check they were done. Yanbu. 10 seems very old to not know how to open a hot oven door.

DD1 is 10 and she makes biscuits and other simple things. I am not worried in the slightest about the oven but I asdmit I am not to keen on her using the gas hobs for some weird reason!

Sorry, I've changed my mind a bit. Your husband should not call you stupid and try to undermine you like that even if what you had asked your son to do was not do straightforward. You're his mother, your assessment of what hr is capable of counts for a lot.

So yanbu, but your dh is being a dick. Don't doubt yourself.

DS~1 cooks pizza (well he put it in the oven ). Has been known to bake a potato. DD bakes stuff. All without direct supervision.

Having said that children do need to be taught how to do these things safely the first time, rather than just be expected to get on with it.

My boys have been making cups of coffee (for me not them) since the age of about 8. They are 10 and 12 now and can and do use the grill, the hob, the oven and the microwave! They are not allowed to 'cook' if an adult is not in the house, but are quite capable of baking or rustling up a simple meal unsupervised.

Agree your DH is out of order. My 11 year old builds fires and cooks over an open flame at Scouts.

Im sure i used to bake cakes ect at home and at school at this ages.

Did dh's mother do everything for him? It's absolutely fine for him to check the oven. I was making toffee and flapjacks at that age unsupervised.

YANBU. I have a DD who is 11, loves baking, she uses oven - no probs.

YANBU. I take my lead from old Enid Blyton and Ladybird books from the 50s where children basically did all sorts of things like that eg. lighting fires, milking cows, looking after swathes of younger siblings, doing a days worth of household 'chores' because 'mother was unwell'... I'm partly joking but I do think at 10 years old they are not complete cabbages when it comes to all manner of heat, fire, electricity and naked skin...

It's certainly a way to build responsibility and self esteem in a safe enviroment. That's how I see it. My DH on the other hand is like yours....

YANBU. My 11 year old and 9 year old both bake on their own and they put stuff in the oven and take it out unsupervised. Your DH is being way too overprotective IMO.

Agree with majority YANBU so long as you've shown him how to do it safely. Your H needs to have a bit more respect IMO...not call you stupid.

YANBU, to me it depends on howmuch time the 10 year old has spent in the kitchen with you.

If they have no/little experience of having to be careful round hot things and standing back so the hot air doesn't get you then I don't think I would ask them to do it.

However, I wouldn't hesitate to ask a 10 year old child whohad experience of all of the above.
