to kick up a fuss with dc school

Just after the easter break this yr my daughter got a letter from school saying that they had registered to a maths internet site where the children can access from home with a password that the school would send home... a few weeks later my daughter comes home excited that she has her login name and password (all lovely and laminated for her...We tried to log on together and an error came up saying that my dd has to be assigned a class and to contact the school...
I spoke to her teacher who told me because my dd is in another maths group i should talk to that teacher(bearing in mind that she is in primary school and this was her class teacher) I did this and was told it would be sorted out.

Now today I go to school and the maths TA tells me she has spoken to the Teacher(someone else now) woh sets this up and she is unable to set up as she is teaching and its nearly end off term....and the reason i'm ticked off is that now my daughter cannot enjoy this experience that all her class mates will over the summer break...so dd is upset...why send the letter and put my dd hopes up

I think you should go in and calmly say they have told your DD she can do something and it is nor fair and not acceptable to take that away from her, especially as all her friends will have access.

Do you really think that the children will be accessing a school maths internet site over the summer holidays? Mine won't touch his school website with a barge pole at the best of times, and would balk at having to do so in the hols.

The children need a break - let them have one.

I don't see why you need to kick up a fuss, just go in and calmly request it.
However I am with scaryteacher-have a holiday!

I have left my phone number with the school for the Teacher that sets this up to contact me...
I'm quite upset about this as my daughter is not a confident child at school and doesnt make friends easy ...now this on top when the other children tell each other what level they are on or how they have progress she comes home and we try to log on and nothing...
any advise as to what to say to this teacher or should I go in ans speak to someone?

the other point is that I had told the TA that my internet connection will be disconnected in the hols as are in a bit off financial difficulties...i was hoping that she would be able to access this site in the hols from nans or the public library...(something to do as dont think will be having much off a hol due to finances

Yes, definitely have a word with the school! Are you certain that your DD is the only one in that situation?

Surely it is all benefit for the school as well if she works on her maths this summer through this site?

Is it Mathletics? DCs school have it too and it is fab so yes, insist,insist, insist!

my kids love maths sites from school and would happily access through holidays

speak to school - don't wait for call back - end of year they're busy and will forget

my daughter doesnt get to go on pc often at home so she does look forward to it..
she is also a keen learner and loves learning through play..i think what scaryteacher is saying is something that 1 am sure i will experience with my ds

Agree with others. It's not fair on your DD and it should be sorted out. The old line "it's the end of term" is a nonsense line because despite it being the end of term, the children are still there to learn and by not sorting this out, they are, in effect depriving your DD of that particular learning experience.

You might want to quote equal opportunities at them because by them not sorting this for your DD, she is not being afforded equal opportunities to her classmates.

BTW it is none of the TA's buisness where your DD will have access to it! Once she has the password she can access from any internet connected computer so I really do not think she can use yourself not being connected as an excuse!

I was told that they are a few others that have not got access spoke to another parent and her son cannot get on wheras the elder one can but I think she is not concerned as they both use the one login i think...or maybe he ds is the type that balks atthe dreaded word MAths

Is it Mathletics? If so, it is a very good site, some kids love it and I know of many who went on to it over the easter hols, not considering it as 'work' at all.

Just speak pleasantly to the school and say you would like this to be sorted if at all possible.

There are loads of good maths sites - cbbc bitesize? in the meantime. Bit unsure why they all have separate logins - at my dcs school they all use the same.

@sweetfall should I wait till end of the day or go in like now ...(am a bit scared myself what with scary teachers and all.
I could wait for the call and if I dont get one atleast it will justify me going to the deputy or head first thing tomorow morning?

re stroppy point I am not sure if all have the same or not ...but on putting the password it comes up with and error as dd needs to be assigned a class...i will asumme this will let her access age/level appriopriate maths--

I don't think that you can have a better one than woodlands maths zone and you don't have to log in.

The things that makes interesting (in my Dcs POV, is that you can have challenge with other children from around the world in real time) but yes , Bitesize and woodlands math zone look very good as well, I have just bookmarked both fot the dcs!

We have and do use this one but I think it dd feels out that she is missing out from something other classmates are doing...
If it was dd asking for something that a fellow class mate did in there own time eg like 'so-so does dance classes can I?' i think it would have been easier to sort out as I could have explained to her that she has hobbies that maybe her friend doesnt get to do aswell...

Mathletics is different.

Each child must have their own login and password because when you are in the site, you play maths cimpetitions against other real children who are logged on. So you can be racing against children in your own school or in Australia or Singapore, to finish first.

This competitive element is what makes it so appealing to children. Also, each child creates their own mini-me picture which gives an extra personal feel for who you are competing against.

It is a great site and is different to all the usual bbc sort of stuff.

re class, can't you just type in your dd's year stage? Try a couple of possible variations?

@ Pointydog : DD1 does the challenges just to collect "money" and buy things for her character!
