Need to rant - apologies in advance.

I live on a main road, near several takeaways and a general shop/off license. I have just witnessed a man driving by in his car, throwing his burger carton out of the window, which then elegantly bounced off my car and cartwheeled onto my front path. I clear the rubbish off my front path every week, and every week it gets just as choked up with other people's shit. Mostly takeaway cartons, sweet and chocolate wrappers, cigarette boxes and THOUSANDS of cigarette butts.

I once saw a woman driving a respectable and new looking family mpv full of kids. The front passenger window opened and a teenage girl threw her empty drink carton out onto the street. The woman didn't even flinch.

Who thinks it's ok to teach their kids that the world is their dustbin?

I HATE THIS. Opposite our house is a main road and then a bit of woodland. It is a total tip along the verge. DH has complained to the council but they haven't done much about it.

The side of the motorway is disgusting too. How are we meant to teach our dc's to respect the environment with that kind of example around.

I feel your pain. We live on a main road AND the bus stop is right outside the apartment block. This means that as well as traffic noise, we have not only appalling litter BUT ALSO heinous chavs sitting outside day and night yelling to each other, eating, smoking, vomiting, fighting, pissing, smashing the bus stop windows and yes, shagging. Last night we were treated to the delights of some drunk bloke bellowing 'Kev! 'Ave you fingered 'er yet?' repeatedly at 10.30pm. Classy.

Rant away, I'd put them in the same basket as people who spit in the street. I remember as a child posters everywhere (I'm an old fart) telling people not to spit (TB) it seems to have become 'trendy'. Caught my 4 year old spitting the other day and tore him off a strip, he couldn't see what the problem was as 'all my friends do it' arrrghhh litter and spitting in the same basket.

YANBU. I'd go so far as to say this describes two distinct categories of people. . . those who litter and those who don't.

It makes me FUME, it's selfish and idle.

A girl threw some litter out of her car window in front of me and I remarked to my son how disgusting it was. She obviously caught the gist as she proceeded to give me the evils in the rear view mirror (like a 3-year old when they're being naughty) and threw more litter out the window...

YANBU in the slightest. I challenged a guy in the local park who thought that putting his litter in the tree next to the swings rather than in the bin 5 meters away was OK. When I asked him if he was going to leave it there, he replied, 'why don't you fuck off back to snobsville where you came from, this is the fucking east end, what the fuck do you expect'. All this time I was smiling at my son who I was pushing on the swing. I told him that I thought other people who live in east London would be upset with his attitude, only to receive another tirade of abuse. He was with his dp and kids. What a charmer! His kids don't stand a chance with a dad like that! Grrrrrr! Sorry, rant over!

Yanbu. The other day I saw some chavs slow down to enter a roundabout then open the car door and chuck an empty can of red bull out .I see them dropping litter all the time.And the worst thing is that I can't tell the chavs off if I have the children with me as I'm scared they'll get nasty. I just walk along fuming.

I did tell a couple of nice emo kids off for dropping litter and they were really embarrassed and picked it up .

Mawgan and Meglet - I wish I had your confidence to SAY something to people I see littering. I never do because I'm too frightened of confrontation. I just fume quietly then feel guilty for NOT saying anything. Maybe if we all did, all the time, people would stop doing it. So many people seem to think it's socially acceptable!

YANBU. I can't understand why people think it's okay to do this.

I once saw a friend drop some litter and when i asked her why she did it she said that it kept the local street cleaners in a job

YANBU at all! I hate litter (and have spoken about it to children/teenagers when I've seen them do it).

OMG i totally agree, YANBU at all.

We live opposite a park and every morning when i walk my dogs before work the litter is astonishing. Of course the dogs go crazy and want to eat everything they see which is problematic when it is bits of chocolate, broken beer bottles, doughnuts, chicken wings etc.

The worst thing about it for me is that this is a nice area, and the youngsters hanging about in the park all evening and leaving their litter 4 metres away from the litter bins are from nice homes where I bet their parents do teach them not to litter - so they know better. They see better all the time, and for me it makes it a worse offence. I frequently ask people to pick up litter and usually get an embarrassed but positive response.

For people living deprived lives in deprived areas, with nothing of beauty to enjoy or look after, I can understand how they may not feel connected enough to their neighbourhood to want to keep it nice and tidy (although not how they feel entitled to abuse anyone who reminds them that littering is an offence and they should clear up after themselves).

But for people living in a very affluent area with all life's material advantages - it is so incredibly frustrating. They have every incentive to keep things nice and simply cannot be bothered.

It's smokers who annoy me the most. Most are people who wouldn't throw crisp packets etc on the street, but think nothing of throwing their butt down, stomping on it and leaving it there. I was at an outdoor paddling pool today and there was no litter problem expect fucking fag ends everywhere!!! They were all over the grass, next to the pool, in the pool..... FGS why do smokers thing their disgusting butts are exempt from litter laws! My friend and I both have toddlers and we spent most of the afternoon stopping them from picking up the fag ends and putting them in their mouths!

I used to smoke way back when, but I never dropped my butts on the street. I'd put the fag out on a fence/wall/streetlight etc, then carry the butt until I found a bin. Not hard. So why doesn't anyone else seem to manage it?

Loads of parks and commons around here, and everyone uses them in the summer for picnics and bbqs and drinking etc. and it's amazing in the morning the littler that has just been left by people, some groups just seem to stand up after their picnic or bbq and walk off, leaving all their rubbish and debris. WTF?!?! It makes my blood boil, it really does. There are bins ^everywhere, and extra ones put out in the summer for people to use, why the fuck can't they walk 20 paces to the bin and put their rubbish there???

Was driving up my road the other day and the car in front chucked takeaway cartons out of the window. Not sure what you can do about it if they're in front of you - obviously if they're behind you, you can stop the car and get out and go and shout at them

Litter droppers are scum, and are the only group for which I support capital punishment.

If you expect other people to look at, smell and clean up your crap, then you can contribute nothing to the world, only detract from it...so extermination is probably best for society.

I overheard the young girl next door telling her two-year-old, "No, pick that up and bring it in - we are not the kind of family who drops litter".

It made me smile, as I thought that it was a really nice 'pack-mentality' way of teaching the child: there are inconsiderate people who do that, and respectable people who don't, and we are in the second group.

I am fairly new here, but having just read through most of the aibu, am totally suprised no one has said.........oh so is it only people in non respectable crappy cars that throw rubbish then??

Though i have to say i do agree with you, but i have just been seeing that often they miss the point of the post and only bring up what they see as mistakes

My pet hate too. Particularly hate seeing grown adults just dump their newspapers on trains and tubes in the morning turning my journey into work into a journey in a dustbin. Grown adults can pick up their rubbish and put it in a bin for crying out loud. Grrrr!

I don't think theyre necessarily lower than pondlife but they are lazy. What's the problem with holding something till you reach a bin? Especially when it's a half eaten kebab or burger, blergh

It really, really bugs me - who on earth brings up their kids to think that dropping litter is ok??

I'd be mortified if DS dropped a tiny piece of rubbish yet some people really do chuck whole bags of fast food detritus out of car windows etc.
