to get really annoyed with people who call Tesco "Tescos'?

This really annoys me. It's not called Tescos, it's just Tesco. You wouldn't say Asdas or Lidls or Aldis (sorry about the choice of supermarket examples, only ones that don't actually have an 's' on the end). Does anyone else get cross when their friends say they're "just going to Tescos"? I know there are more important things to worry about, but why would you call it that when it isn't called that?

It's Occ-ardo not Oh-car-do.

While I remember there was a phase a while back for pronouncing Waitrose with a glottal stop in the middle but somehow in a posh way. I'm orff to Wai'Rose. Drove me mad but it seems to have gorn away now.

OP, you must get really annoyed very often if this is your annoyance threshold.

happywomble · 28/06/2009 20:45

phew - I am using correct pronounciation. A friend uses the other one

My MIL says WaiT-Rose!

Well I suppose the standard pronunciation is Waichrose...

Ambi · 28/06/2009 20:48

oh dear, if that is what annoys you I'd hate to think what might drive you to the brink.

UnquietDad · 28/06/2009 21:30

Really? I've always made efforts to say "Wait Rose." Like something David Tennant would say to Billie Piper before she runs off down a corridor.

happywomble · 28/06/2009 21:41

UQD
I would say waiTRose with a tr sound in the middle whereas MIL would say Wait-Rose with the T accentuated and a tiny gap before the Rose begins.

Haven't heard the waichrose so much - is that a west country thing?!

I boycott Tesco/tescos as a result of a bad online experience so at least I don't have to lose sleep at night wondering if I will go to Tesco or Tescos tomorrow!

TheYearOfTheCatMPADist · 30/06/2009 23:18

I suppose saying Sainey's would be a bit annoying too then?

Eve4Walle · 01/07/2009 07:11

Or Sainsbos which is how we refer to it in our house?

I have to say, this isn't up there on my annoying list. I'm more concerned about my kids catching swine flu now before they stop dishing out the drugs in the winter.
