to get really annoyed with people who call Tesco "Tescos'?

This really annoys me. It's not called Tescos, it's just Tesco. You wouldn't say Asdas or Lidls or Aldis (sorry about the choice of supermarket examples, only ones that don't actually have an 's' on the end). Does anyone else get cross when their friends say they're "just going to Tescos"? I know there are more important things to worry about, but why would you call it that when it isn't called that?

Sorry OP, I'm a repeat offender! I also say Nettos and Aldis. Don't ask me why, haven't a clue.

jemart · 26/06/2009 19:53

yabu

junglist1 · 26/06/2009 19:54

Marks and Spencer is Marks and Sparks round here

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 26/06/2009 20:55

My mum either calls Waitrose 'Wainscot' (why? I have no idea!) or doesn't sound the t so it's Wai-rose.

Drives me completely mental.

UnquietDad · 26/06/2009 21:51

Does anyone in real life say "Sainsbugs" apart from Sarah frigging Kennedy?

ramalama · 26/06/2009 22:03

I say Tescos and Marks and Sparks or Marksy's

I'm oop north..maybe it's a regional thing.

MIL says loads of words wrong and they bug the life out of me

like maintainence and she calls her gs 'Joss' instead of Josh

she probably says Lidls and Asdas as well...I won't find out as that would mean having to visit her

chegirl · 26/06/2009 22:08

I dont mind Tescos but HATE Asdas and Matalans.

Whats that about?

Tezzas and Sonsburies are quite annoying too.

On a tangent - when I was a vetinary nurse at the RSPCA just about everyone pronounced spayed 'spay did' as in ' I want to get me dog spaydid'.

Drove me bonkers.

BexieID · 26/06/2009 22:13

lol, this annoys me too. It's when you get staff on the tannoy saying 'Thank-you for shopping at Tesco's' that's amusing!

Bonneville · 26/06/2009 22:14

I have never heard anyone refer to Matalan as Matalans.

LovingtheSilverFox · 26/06/2009 22:21

Someone I know refers to it as Mataland, that's annoying.

applepudding · 26/06/2009 22:27

Um - yeah - YAB totally U!

TheYearOfTheCatMPADist · 26/06/2009 22:35

I always call it Tescos. In fact, I think the staff at my local Tescos call it Tescos.

Tescos

Tescos

Tescos

Tescos

Tescos

Tescos

If you say it often enough it has a good ring to it.

steviesgirl · 26/06/2009 23:08

God, you really are very sad and pathetic if you get annoyed over such trivial things!

TESCO'S!!!!!!!!In yer face love

kitkatqueen · 26/06/2009 23:13

I don't think I would refer to Tesco own brand ~I would say Tesco's own brand because surely thats how the english language works??

imo yabu

If however you had an issue with people who say they have had a hystelectomony rather than a hysterectomy etc then go ahead - fill yr boots it drives me nuts

mumeeee · 27/06/2009 13:03

you are not alone.

I also dislike Scissor Sisters and Killers being called The Scissor Sisters and THE Killers.

UnquietDad · 27/06/2009 14:05

And Buzzcocks and Stereophonics. Although the latter have been more indiscriminate with their definite article.

hambler · 27/06/2009 14:18

I've always liked you, unquietdad .

Hormonesnomore · 27/06/2009 15:56

Tesco = Tescos

Asda = Asdas

Marks & Spencer = Markies (yes,it's a Dundee thing )

and everyone said Woolies, didn't they?

happywomble · 28/06/2009 10:11

I can't bear "marksies" - sorry

Surely M & S sounds better?

Hormonesnomore · 28/06/2009 19:45

Don't like 'Marksies' myself, we call it 'Markies' - as in 'Woolies'.

'M&S' is nice, sounds quite posh - I usually use that where I live now, as no-one here would know what 'Markies' is

Tambajam · 28/06/2009 19:49

My delivery man yesterday morning said he was from 'ocados'.
For some reason I couldn't bring myself to correct him. And his colleague the other week gave me the 'receiPt'. He must say that at least 20 times a day every day.
