to get really annoyed with people who call Tesco "Tescos'?

This really annoys me. It's not called Tescos, it's just Tesco. You wouldn't say Asdas or Lidls or Aldis (sorry about the choice of supermarket examples, only ones that don't actually have an 's' on the end). Does anyone else get cross when their friends say they're "just going to Tescos"? I know there are more important things to worry about, but why would you call it that when it isn't called that?

pokes tongue out

YA obviously BU.

flowerybeanbag · 25/06/2009 14:15

I say Tescos. But I don't say Asdas or Markses.

MadreInglese · 25/06/2009 14:16

My mum calls Superdrug "Tip Top", bet that would really annoy you

GrimmaTheNome · 25/06/2009 14:16

Markses is no more wrong than Marks and Spencer's, is it?

MamaLazarou · 25/06/2009 14:17

Superdrug? Tip Top? But WHY???

My mum says 'markses' and also thinks the plural of 'breakfast' is 'breakfasses'. Grr!

bumptwitknocker · 25/06/2009 14:17

I stick with saying M&S. It's much easier than Marks and Spencer or Markses.

Where I live it's not just shops that get an extra S on the end.

oh no.

you have knickers's
pyjamas's
socks's
shoes's
bags's

that drives me f**cking mental. Makes people sound thick.

meemarsgotabrandnewbump · 25/06/2009 14:18

MI - shouldn't that be Tip Tops

Fimbo · 25/06/2009 14:19

Mama be thankful my parents say Brake fist

flowerybeanbag · 25/06/2009 14:19

I do say Marks and Spencer's actually now I think about it...

MmeLindt · 25/06/2009 14:19

I say Tescos. And Asdas.

Is it a Scottish thing?

Although we say Markies

And sometimes Marks and Sparks

MadreInglese · 25/06/2009 14:19

I think it used to be called Tip Top, or maybe that's just the shop that was in that spot before Superdrug, I dunno

I thought Tip Top was some kind of condensed milk

meemarsgotabrandnewbump · 25/06/2009 14:21

differentID - are you in the Southwest?

Fimbo · 25/06/2009 14:21

Mme Lindt - only rif raf say Markies according to my Dundonian mother.

BlackEyedDogstar · 25/06/2009 14:22

'knickers's' ??? just so wrong

anyway yabu

Tesco needs the s on the end otherwise the word sounds incomplete IMO

tigerbear · 25/06/2009 14:23

OP - I TOTALLY agree with you. People who say it sound thick.

bumptwitknocker · 25/06/2009 14:23

I think the Scottish do it more than the English MmeLindt. It's the natural accent thing. Maybe that's not quite as bad. I know a few people who say Marks and Sparks.

differentID · 25/06/2009 14:23

South Wales, meemar.

Thing is I grew up in West Wales and no one did it! We were told off for using poor English

grumblinalong · 25/06/2009 14:25

OP - are you very bored?

I HATE it when people say 'texties' for text messages. It's friggin TEXTS!

flowerybeanbag · 25/06/2009 14:25

rofl!

I'm fairly confident I don't 'sound thick'!

MmeLindt · 25/06/2009 14:25

Fimbo
Well, my Mum always said Markies and she is from Perth, so posher than your Dundonian Mum (unless she is from the Ferry, then I will bow to her advice)

MirandaG · 25/06/2009 14:26

My mum calls the microwave the 'micro' Drives me bananas

BestFootForward · 25/06/2009 14:27

Tescos I can live with- Wickes-es is what sets my teeth on edge- it's Wickes, with one s, it doesn't need another es on the end!

Fimbo · 25/06/2009 14:27

No my mother is from the esteemed West End! . She used to berate me for calling it Markies. I even have to train dh not to call it that in front of her.

Coalman · 25/06/2009 14:30

Somerfields and Tescos - both okay.

Can't stand Kwop for Co-op though. Kworp is acceptable.
