to get really annoyed with people who call Tesco "Tescos'?

This really annoys me. It's not called Tescos, it's just Tesco. You wouldn't say Asdas or Lidls or Aldis (sorry about the choice of supermarket examples, only ones that don't actually have an 's' on the end). Does anyone else get cross when their friends say they're "just going to Tescos"? I know there are more important things to worry about, but why would you call it that when it isn't called that?

OP posts:

And I sometimes refer to John Lewises, thereby confirming my own theory.

midnightexpress · 25/06/2009 16:00

Boots's, Lewis's?

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 25/06/2009 16:06

OP, I am going to really piss you off and declare that I shop at Tescos, Marksies and Johnny Lulus. It is because I am northern.

Greensleeves · 25/06/2009 16:07

I work with someone who says craysh instead of creche

it really sets my teeth on edge

come to think of it the same woman says tippos instead of typos

I may have to flush her head down the bog or something

Madmentalbint · 25/06/2009 16:09

I don't know what I usually say. I've been sat here saying "Tesco" and "Tesco's" over and over and I still don't know.

My Grandma calls Waitrose Wait-Rosie's

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 25/06/2009 16:10

Also, I would argue that "Tescos" rather than "Tesco" sounds softer and therefore fools the mind into believing that a trip there will not eat your soul.

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 25/06/2009 16:13

Oh no, Madmentalbint, I am going to have to adopt that now as well.

claireybee · 25/06/2009 16:19

I say both Tesco and Tescos I think...now I'm thinking about it I'm not sure!

stickylittlefingers · 25/06/2009 16:46

greensleeves - that might be my mother - I don't know about typose (not something we've discussed), but I do try and get her to say nursery now that my attempts at "cresh" have fallen on deaf ears. I wonder where that comes from?

hocuspontas · 25/06/2009 16:56

"I shop at Tesco". "I am going to Tesco's". Sounds right to me. Similar to "I like Jane". "I am going to Jane's".

As a past employee at Tesco HQ if I remember rightly it is named after the founders T. E. Stockwell and Jack Cohen.

MmeLindt · 25/06/2009 16:59

Stealthpolarbear
You could just pretend that you have just returned from a trip to Switzerland as that is how they pronounce Co-op around here.

Greensleeves · 25/06/2009 17:02

sticky does she live in the south west?

if it is her, I apologise profusely for threatening to flush your mother's head down the bog

hifi · 25/06/2009 17:03

dh says burk instead of burp, drives me in sane

TrillianAstra · 25/06/2009 17:05

Johnny Lulu?

Now that one sounds rude.

bellavita · 25/06/2009 17:06

I have a friend who says Asdas and cinemas

like, "I am going to the cinemas tonight"...

she also says... filims!!!

poppyknot · 25/06/2009 17:08

Remember a Smack0the-pony-esque sketch from way back where someone was moaning about people referring to Trivial Pursuits etc. I am afraid I can't recall any of the etcs but it was in the same vein.

In Scotland we happily refer to Tescos and it does not grate. DD2 used to call it Cockos.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 25/06/2009 17:09

poppyk - do you still have Willie Low's, or were they eaten up by someone bigger?

hocuspontas · 25/06/2009 17:10

poppyknot - there was an old sketch with Helen Lederer about Trivial Pursuits, they were playing the 'genius' edition. Very funny

zeke · 25/06/2009 17:15

I wouldn't even notice tbh.
I guess it has become an excepted norm - like calling your mass your weight etc.

Fimbo · 25/06/2009 17:16

Willie Low's was eaten up by Tesco.

My dearly departed granny used to call it Lindsay and Low for some reason and she called the Co-op the sosh.

zeke · 25/06/2009 17:16

OOPS @ 'excepted'

piscesmoon · 25/06/2009 17:30

I don't see why it is annoying-I always do it-I think that I add an 's' when talking about all the supermarkets. I have never given it any thought. I suppose not Waitrose as it doesn't go. It is not something that is going to worry me or give me pause for thought in the future either!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 25/06/2009 17:36

I think I do this. Never realised before now. Also say Asdas and Marks and Spencers. I think lots of people do it.

UnquietDad · 25/06/2009 17:42

I call M&S "Emma Ness". Poncy friends think it is some designer shop.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 25/06/2009 17:51

when I met dh he called IKEA 'ik-key-yas'. doesn't now..
