DS is in yr 6 and traditionally the Yr6 parents have organised a barbeque after school for the Yr6 children and their families and teachers.I the past this has ben done on a pretty informal basis with people signing up to say send in a box of burgers or some drinks.This year there is a new HT who has said he doesn't want a BBQ on health and safety grounds and has asked some of the parents to organise it.They have decided that they willhave a picnic instead and have asked every family to send £32 which will cover food ,a momento of teh occasion and other bits and pieces.
It just seems so OTT to me.Wahat do you think ?

Forgot to say I am a single parent and work full time so it will be only DD going and me if I can get time off

does seem a tad pricey. perhaps it's from M&S/ Harrods?!

blimey! How much are they intending on everyone eating! We don't spend that much on picnics we do for our entire family and some guests!

It is impossible to say whether it is reasonable or not with the vagueness of "memento" and "bits and pieces".

Or you could offer to help organise it.

At ds's old school the year 6 parents were asked to:
Pay for a meal for their children
Pay for a meal with the other parents
Make a 'donation' towards the cost of something for the school. My friend's son's leaving cost her £300 on top of the terms school fees!

£32! For that price I presume that they employed Jamie or Gordon for the day.

Maybe the burgers are made from those Japanese cattle who are regularly massaged. And the bread rolls will be organic ciabatta. It won't be lettuce, it will be rocket washed in mineral water. You need to go just so you can report back .

Flipping Nora, that is a stupid amount of money. For that you should all be getting a 3 course meal served to you complete with coffee and cheese board after a day in a major theme park.

What on earth are the extras? Molton Brown hampers?

For that you could get one of those big hamper things and stuff it full of smoked salmon.

I wonder if that is what they are planning?

Last year when DS1 was in Yr6, the kids compiled a list of food and drink the would like for their end of year disco/prom. All I had to send in was a cheesecake and two bottles of lemonade.

"The Friends" of the school who are our fund raisers, covered the cost of a party at the local community centre on the final night of term.

A memento of the picnic? Tell them the woven platinum baskets that they've obviously purchased to serve the food from,will do very nicely.

You'd be quite pissed off if you paid it and all you got was a manky egg sarnie, packet of ASDA smart price crisps and a plastic cup of orange squash!!

Is there nobody you could ask to find out what they have planned?
