Genuine observation here, not trying to stir anything. It just seems a lot less cliquey and bum-licky. My replies are recognised and appreciated. I hope newbies feel welcomed and that there isn't some barrier that you have to cross in order to become 'popular'.

Well?

I agree that sounds like a swipe to shiney, like i must be a thicko because i hang around the AIBU threads

I enjoy controversy

Tamarto · 22/05/2009 11:42

The we are better than you angle is so old...

TrillianAstra · 22/05/2009 11:42

Like AIBU, don't like Kyle. Am very intelligent. So there.

OrmIrian · 22/05/2009 11:43

hice instead of houses.....

VinegarTits · 22/05/2009 11:44

Relitvely new? ive been here over 2 yrs and AIBU was here before me so its not relatively new, and was here long before moldies

daftpunk · 22/05/2009 11:44

aibu is great...JK is rubbish, not sure there's that many people on mn who like him.

BitOfFun · 22/05/2009 11:44

The Queen would live in a hice if she had to downsize, for sure...

Ledodgy · 22/05/2009 11:45

Bloody hell has it been going two years? Time flies and all that..

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 11:46

did you see the jk thread, bof?i stopped reading it when the consensus became that he was a hunk who got things done.

and it wasn't a swipe, mn has got bigger and dumber, that's all. it just has. if you weren't there when it was less dumb i don't really see how you can comment tbh. i joined three years ago, people were already complaining then... doesn't mean i'm dumb just cos i only joined three years ago, just means that it's more like a comprehensive and less like the sixth year form room of a grammar. so it's not all bad. but i really don't like it here when it gets like the detention room, that's all, and for me the bumsex pre-occupation hasn't been very funny.

Ledodgy · 22/05/2009 11:48

Aitch, I agree. You are on form today.

Lizzylou · 22/05/2009 11:50

I joined MN 4.5 yrs ago, pre-Mothercare but long after the Old Guard. I enjoyed it, but was in a new Mother haze so couldn't have been intello if I'd tried.
I liked MN, but wasn't addicted, I did find it daunting and not that welcoming at times. It was purely a distraction and I managed to not even log on for about 6mths post DS2's birth, I didn't really miss it either.
Now I have more time on my hands I am on here more, so am bound to like it more.
There are some fab posters, past and present, I miss lots of the Moldies, but enjoy reading the posts of lots of newer posters.
Oh, and Chatta, there were always threads about how much money you had/hadn't got.

I do think that that bloody notice at the top of AIBU threads almost gives some a license to be overly rude and abrupt (or downright insulting).

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 11:50

i remember you when you were leododgy...

why the hell were you leododgy?

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 11:52

interesting, lizzy. i wonder if things have got mre terse since that notice? i don't think so, actually, but then i don't read a lot of them.

I've never been leododgy aitch!

BitOfFun · 22/05/2009 11:55

Aitch, I only saw that thread while there were still sane people on it

Lizzylou, I think they've altered the wording on it now for that reason < goes off to check >

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 11:55

are you SURE?!

VinegarTits · 22/05/2009 11:56

So what your saying is, when MN started out it was full of intello grammar school types, who pondered over politics and debated over religon?

And now its like a mixed state school, full of dumb-no-hopers who like to discuss bum sex, so hence they must be thicko JK lovers?

Well i know which of those i would rather be, but then my head is to big to fit up my arse, i have a big head, its because i have a big brain, i have trouble buying hats

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 11:56

you ere something else, though, what was it? i'm certain it had a random vowel in it somewhere...

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/05/2009 11:57

I didn't say AIBU is rubbish (although it is IMO) I just said it is the reason MN appears to have dumbed down.

It's ok to be intelligent and like dumbing down. I am intelligent and quite like the occasional bumsex thread (gone and blown any chance I had of any MN gravitas by admitting that) though the way you can't go 2 sentences without reading the words bumsex is now rather tedious (bumsex).

So, liking AIBU and being intelligent is perfectly understandable, but those threads still bring MN down to the lowest common denominator.

(bumsex)

Leododgy · 22/05/2009 11:58

Oi, I was here before Ledodgy - and I don't like the implication that it's a stupid name either, Aitch < narrows eyes >
< goes back to reading Ant book >

Ledodgy · 22/05/2009 11:58

I think VT, that when I joined it felt like a "club" that you had to prove your worth to belong to (by being intello/funny ) and now it seems more inclusive.
There is a greater mix of people and perhaps not as many JK fans are scared away now?

Ledodgy · 22/05/2009 11:59

at Leo!

Makeda · 22/05/2009 11:59

I'm pretty new to MN (only a few months, and during the first couple I didn't post at all) so I can't really give any sort of opinion on how it has changed since the Moldie saga. However, a lot of this debate seems to be about how people use MN and what they think it should be. Some use it for support, or advice, or to talk about things they wouldn't or couldn't in RL, or they find the sort of friends they don't have in RL, or just to add to the RL friends, or they like a good (and/or heated) debate, or (like me) they like the range of opinions that can be found here. I particularly like the fact that I think I've made my mind up about something but then someone gives a different perspective on it which then alters (or strengthens) my opinion.

It is very dangerous when people start dictating how a site like this should be used, and who should use it, because everyone here is so different and because it would inhibit some people from using it who have a valid contribution to make or who find real value and support in the content.

I'm not saying that this is what was happening/happened/is happening to MN around moldiegate, because as I've said I really have no knowledge of what went on. I'm just saying that I think that there will always be a difference of opinion amongst users about what or who MN is for/should be for, and no one person or group should be allowed to make those rules (except MNHQ perhaps!) to the extent that some people feel that they don't belong.
