...to not want to use Next online because it won't let me pay straight away?

I placed my first order with Next online for some maternity stuff (can't get it in the shops, so it's online or through the catalogue). Put all my details in etc etc, but I can't pay yet?

I have to wait for a customer number to be sent out through the post, THEN I can log into my account and pay.

I know it sounds daft to want to pay when I don't have to, but I have this morbid fear of debt (and reasonably so tbh) and I really don't like this hanging over me, even for a few days.

AIBU to feel so uncomfortable like this? Or does everyone else cope find and I'm just being a stick in the mud?

Not paying straight away is a bonus for me

kittycats · 06/05/2009 20:40

I had this problem so ended up not buying anything.
You should beable to pay straight away if thats what you choose.

browntrout · 06/05/2009 20:41

i had this problem with Next. Dont really shop there that often but thought I'd order a dress for a special occasion. I had an account (dont know how - I get the directory sent to me without ever requesting it for some reason) and I wasnt allowed to actually pay for it up front. When it arrived I didnt like it and they charged me £5 or so for delivery anyway! Last time I will be using their online service.

bran · 06/05/2009 20:41

If you have a shop near you you can order from the catalogue in the shop and then either pick it up from the shop a few days later or have it delivered to you (there is a delivery charge). You pay straightaway in the shop.

I have done this when there was an item of school uniform for DS that I couldn't get anywhere else and I couldn't bear the faff of ordering from the website.

Make sure that you tell them that you don't want a catalogue, otherwise they will send you one every season and charge you for it.

Bugbear of mine

I hate having to open a farkin account.
made the mistake once with simplybe or laredoute and lived to regret it

don't do it

take your business elsewhere

Saltire · 06/05/2009 20:47

Same with the shoe tailor, you can't just pay for the shoes when you order, you ahve to wait for them to open an account and send you a bill

FigmentOfYourImagination · 06/05/2009 20:48

Sazzles, returns are easy - just arrange it through the website and the courier collects from your home. It takes seconds.

Same with payment, you can pay it online with a credit or debit card, takes seconds and is easy peasy.

lucky1979 · 06/05/2009 20:49

I had the worst, repeatedly messed up delivery experience with Next out of any online retailer, which has stopped me from ordering again. By the end of it I switched to store collection in frustration only to end up with a sales girl brandishing a large orange cushion wrapped in clear plastic, trying to convince me that it was the red throw that I'd ordered.

Lovely things, but I won't try getting them to deliver again!

FigmentOfYourImagination · 06/05/2009 20:50

Although I do agree that the account thing is irritating if you just want to check out and go.

ring up
far better plus dont have to pay for directory

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 06/05/2009 21:02

Next is easy peasy. They deliver it next day and you take it back to the shop if you don't want the hassle of couriers.

What I really hate about their system though, is that there is no order tracking. You can't log into your account and see previous orders or anything. Everyone else can manage it so I don't see why they can't. Otherwise I love it. Just wish I didn't spend so much there!

TheCrackFox · 06/05/2009 21:04

The whole account thing has put me off from ever ordering from Next. I just don't get it TBH. I would prefer to pay straight away.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 06/05/2009 21:07

tcf you can if you ring - i learned the hard way and now always ring

littleducks · 06/05/2009 21:43

totally agree, vertbaudet is worse though, i always click they 'pay now' button but somehow they send me a letter demanding payment months later, (although as far as im aware i gave them my card deatails at checkout) as there was a delay in delivering has happened so many times

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 06/05/2009 22:00

I returned something in december. Noticed they hadn't refunded it in Feb. Sent them photocopy of return slip. Noticed they still hadn't refunded it in March. Requested pre-pay envelope to make sure they didn't lose my return slip. Have called three times asking for pre-pay envelope. Pre-pay envelope still not here. Meanwhile they are charging me interest on thing I didn't buy (promise they will refund it but...)
Not easy peasy really....

MmeLindt · 06/05/2009 22:04

I just ordered somethings for my SIL from Next.

I was amazed that I was able to order online, have it sent to my parents address (different name) and they opened an account, offered credit limit and they sent me the goods (worth £70) without even checking if I was genuine.

I live in Switzerland. I had the goods sent to my parents in UK.

Anyone could log on under a false name and have goods sent to a UK address. They are making it easy for fraudsters.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 06/05/2009 22:07

This really pisses me off.

i never ever ever but ever shop from websites where you have to open an account. Asking for trouble. And it's another credit check/credit item showing on your credit reference.

Botbot · 06/05/2009 22:10

Yes, it's like old-fashioned 1970s catalogues. But we're in the 21st century now - it is possible to just pay for it upfront without faffing about with having an 'account'.

cornsilk · 06/05/2009 22:10

I cancelled my Next account 'cos I was so fed up with it. I'd asked and asked for details of paying by direct debit but they couldn't do it over the phone apparently and the details never arrived. You can only pay with certain cards also. An absolute pain.

chequersmate · 06/05/2009 22:12

Yes I had this.

Ordered a b/fing top from there, wanted to pay with a voucher I had - kept expecting a screen to come up where it would ask for payment so that I could check if I could put the voucher numbers in and the next thing I knew the bloody thing had been posted to me and I had to arrange to pay for it later.

V annoying.

BCNS · 06/05/2009 22:13

It's as annoying as hell.. I don't do credit of any kind. It means they lose my custom tbh.. because i would like to pay for it when I order it.

Mummyfor3 · 06/05/2009 22:17

Gosh, I am so relieved that it is not just me, I HATED the whole Next Directory (what it THAT all about???) ordering/paying experience! I ordered stuff last year, just after I had DS3, as I was fed up with maternity clothes . Part of order never arrived, payment and returns and cancellation of goods not received all got so confusing that to this day I have NO idea whether it is really all straightened out!

Never again, never again, never again!! I am still traumatised although have cancelled my account (WTF, I did not want an "account", potentially with interest, I just wanted to chose, buy, pay and be done with it) and will not even venture there again, ever!!

Phew! I feel I have now exorcised a demon, thank you, MN, as ever, thank you and good night!!

MadHairDay · 06/05/2009 22:26

Oh Next is a complete faff. I cancelled my account finally, after being messed around one too many times, not the least trying to cancel the thing and keeping getting directories and also demands for payment on an item I'd returned. I finally rang and stropped at them about them refusing to close the feckin thing down. never again, just too faffy for words.
