To tell them both to piss off,

On Saturday a neighbours cat ran out from underneath a parked car under my wheels as i pulled off my drive, I'd estimate i was doing about 10 mph, if that. I didnt even see the cat, i just heard it if you know what i mean. I feel bloody awfull about it.

I went and told the owner immediatly, helped he catch the cat and offered to take her anywhere she needed to go, of course i said sorry about a million times and was crying as felt so bad about it. She said she was waiting for it to happen as the cat had been hit before and had no road sense. The cat was a bit of a PITA tbh and i know several of the other neighbours have had near misses.

I went back a few hours later and the cat had had to be put to sleep i appologised again, i didnt offer to pay any vets fees as tbh i thought it wouldnt have cost that much to have him pts and presumed she'd have been insured.

Fast forward to last night and we get a knock on the door, we're in out nightclothes just about to go to bed. Df answers the door and there is some bloke we're never seen before stood there shouting and yelling about how we should have offered to pay the vets bills, the cats owner is a single woman etc etc etc.

I think said person was expecting me to answer the door but Dfs did and he's a big 6footer who looks hard ( but is soft as they come ) so i get the feeling he wanted to have a go at me and when he say it was df he ranted for a minute, called us fuckers and started walking away.

I got dressed and went round there, spoke to her, appologised again and said of course we'll contribute something by way of a sincere appology but we wont be paying the whole bill.

Then bloke started shouting at me again and dragged the girl inside saying i wasn't worth speakng to..

i am tempted to tell them both to piss off now. It was an accident and i have been grown up enought to hold my hands up to it, i could have just driven off but i choe to do the right thing and for tht i have been abused on my doorstep and shouted at in the street. It's like money with menaces and i'm not easily intimidated.

The cat apparently wasn't insured, the bill was aparently £200..

what would you do ?

In answer to the OP, I don't think you should tell them to piss off (his verbal aggression doesn't warrant yours), but neither do I think you should offer to pay the bill.

Unfortunately cats roam freely without any owner control - it's WHAT THEY DO. You can't control whether or not they crap in your garden and likewise, you can't control if they dive under your moving car.

I honestly think that as long as you take all reasonable care NOT to run the little buggers over, then that's as much as can be expected of you.

WorzselMummage · 05/05/2009 14:46

she was there too bumpy.

Picante they were lucky they didn't feel the force of the last few months stress i can tell you.. i could feel it well up but told myself not to have ago back as i did kill her cat.

plus, i'm not a chav and would hate to argue on the street like some kind of half wit.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 05/05/2009 14:47

No, you shouldn't pay. You weren't speeding down the road, nor did you swerve to hit it. The (by the owner's admission) stupid cat ran out from a hiding place and under your car and you were going slowly.

That is the risk you take owning an outdoor cat. they can get run over any time at all.

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 14:50

seriously though, £200?!? I'd have offered to knock it on the head for a fiver

when we got a cat we factored in food/accommodation/essential jabs/neutering

not the cost of its ashes

WorzselMummage · 05/05/2009 14:52

maybe i should have reversed over it.

i coud have got away with a sorry card or something then...

OP posts:
BalloonSlayer · 05/05/2009 14:53

Can you pay them £200 but give them a bill for £300 for damage the cat did to your car?

bumpyboo · 05/05/2009 14:57

Yes much cheaper and less aggro for all concerned ha ha
Seriously though, she was with him? They're both as bad as each other then.

Picante · 05/05/2009 15:00

By the way Worzel I think you need to update the other thread with pictures of George!

Kewcumber · 05/05/2009 15:01

I think balloonslayer has the answer - perhaps aslo include some bills for therapy too.

WorzselMummage · 05/05/2009 15:03

Lol My 4year old was in the car, thankfully i managed not to let on what had happened so she has no idea.

They don't know that though do they, mwah hah hah hah

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 15:03

LOL Kew - I'm thinking mental distress, PTSD, whiplash....

WorzselMummage · 05/05/2009 15:04

Picante, will do

OP posts:
Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 15:05

...cat phobia, nightmares, loos of earnings...

mascaraohara · 05/05/2009 15:10

My cat was run over a month ago but was DOA so only the £15 cost of cremation for me

However.. that's what pet insurance wis for.. Mine was insured and I would have claimed if he'd been alive but needing work.

After the way he spoke to you I'd just give them a wide berth.. if it continues tell him you'll call the police cos it's harrassment.

just ignore ignore ignore.

Oh and I'm a single woman as well.. really can't understand what that's got to do with anything.

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 15:11

I don't think it's her single status that's the issue, I think it's the appearance of the mouth-breathing goon on her behalf...

MrsMills · 05/05/2009 15:15

I don't think you should pay any of the bill.

It was their cat. They had a choice whether they got insurance or not. You (afaik) cannot get insurance against accidentally running over someones cat.

WorzselMummage · 05/05/2009 15:16

Picante, Photos added

Mascaraohra ( that took some typing !) I think the fact that she's single is supposed to mean she's skinter thant the rest of us.. or something

OP posts:
mascaraohara · 05/05/2009 15:20

what a load of crap.. being single sometimes makes you better off lol.. but seriously.. why have a pet if you can't afford it.. not having pet insurance is a risk that the owner choses to take.

Honestly, I'd give them nothing!

WorzselMummage · 05/05/2009 15:36

I think i might pop down there later with £50 and if gobshite is there and kicks off again i'll just tell them they had their chance and they've blown it and of he comes to my door again i'll threaten them with calling the police.

I do feel bad about it after all..

OP posts:
BalloonSlayer · 05/05/2009 15:40

Could you claim on your car insurance though but?

You would need the vets' bill to prove it . . . supposing there is one.

laurielou · 05/05/2009 15:43

Of course you feel bad about it, but it sounds like a total accident.

Unfortunately its a risk you take when you own a pet, sh*t happens.

I think you've done enough - the guy sounds a right tw*t.

DoodleFluUseATissue · 05/05/2009 15:46

It doesn't cost £200 quid to put a cat to sleep. Even with emergency treatment, I'd be surprised. I'd be demanding to see that invoice before I coughed up a penny.

Sounds like the woman is OK but the fella is nine pence short of a pound and it also sounds like it's nowt to do with him. I'd deal with her only from now on.

Divvy · 05/05/2009 15:49

I imagine they would also say get lost, if it was there cat caused a car accident!

Thats why a loose anila should be insured, with 3rd party cover at least.

Was there any damage to your car?

lal123 · 05/05/2009 15:55

whether it was an accident or not - you injured her cat which meant it need to be put down. If this was on Judge Judy you know what Judge Judy would say......

(In general a good way to answer moral dilemas - not "What would Jesus do?" - but "What would Judge Judy do?"

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 15:56

but Judge Judy is two drops short of a piss and has mad staring eyes, like a hungry parrot
