To be angry with people who ignore dcs and comment on my cats instead

This happens a lot.
I know not everyone is fond of children, but..... I have two siamese cats, visitors to my house will remark on my cats, the breed, their personalities, even their names. All the while ignoring my two dcs completely.
I'm usually fuming by the end. It is not usually family or friends who do this, but the bad manners really irritates me.
AIBU?

So what your cat's names?

Thunderduck · 26/04/2009 01:49

Are.

I do think it's rather rude not to acknowledge your children.

chefswife · 26/04/2009 02:02

i wish people would stop acknowledging my DD. i can't go anywhere without the constant interruption.

why does everyone i know that have had siamese cats always have two. is that how come?

chefswife · 26/04/2009 02:03

oh ya, YANBU.

GothAnneGeddes · 26/04/2009 02:50

YANBU, thoughtI have to admit that I would make a show of being interested in your dc's, then I would immediately be all over the cats. Cats are marvellous creatures, whereas other people's dcs are a bit hit and miss

ladylush · 26/04/2009 03:00

Tbh I'd have been like this before having my dc To be fair, I wouldn't have ignored your children but I certainly would have paid more attention to the cats. Sorry But YANBU - it is very rude.

thirtypence · 26/04/2009 03:19

You can invite me round. I am not in the least interested in cats and love talking to children.

SouthernLights · 26/04/2009 05:35

YANBU, but send them to my house. My cats have been shamefully ignored since DD was born.

junglist1 · 26/04/2009 08:45

Maybe it's something to do with the breed of cat, I've only ever seen pictures, never met one, so people get overwhelmed (that sounds stupid).Your DC's should be acknowledged as well though, definetely.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 26/04/2009 08:49

Ooh cats! Got any pics?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 26/04/2009 08:51

YABU I think, sadly not everyone loves other people's kids but lots of people love all cats, it's just a fact of life!!

(cat lover here!)

cornsilk · 26/04/2009 08:53

Can you post a picture of them? (The cats I mean.)

HecatesTwopenceworth · 26/04/2009 08:55

I love how interested we are in your cats.

MargaretMountford · 26/04/2009 08:57

uh, I'd probably pay more attention to the cats, if I'm truthful !

BigBellasBeerBelly · 26/04/2009 08:58

Pre DD I would not have had the slightest clue what to do/say to/about a child, and would most likely have ogled the cats.

I love cats

My DD is also more interested in cats than other children if that helps? When MNing I am often impored to get "cat" on the PC, way before "baby" is requested

troutpout · 26/04/2009 09:06

pmsl at the comments on this thread

Can i be the first to say i'm not interested in either?

BigBellasBeerBelly · 26/04/2009 09:18

MNHQ

chocolateismyonlyweakness · 26/04/2009 09:24

The visitors to your house, flowerspot .... just thinking about this, my visitors are either family or friends, if not either it would be someone trying to sell something or it used to be Health visitors, etc.

It would be more of a problem if it was family or friends, I have experienced in-laws not taking alot of notice of children. On balance YANBU, visitors should speak to the dc as well.

I bet your cats are stunning, though

chocolateismyonlyweakness · 26/04/2009 09:26

In fact, what a cattitude

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 26/04/2009 09:28

SOme people like cats more than children, and some like children more than cats. Why are you getting your undies in such a bundle over something fundamentally unimportant. Are your children really ugly or something?

Northernlurker · 26/04/2009 09:31

Why would I have to be interested in your children. I've three of my own and I know pretty much everything they're going to come up with. I don't have any siamese cats though - and I love them. Tbh - you'd be lucky if I didn't leave with them in my handbag.

paisleyleaf · 26/04/2009 09:32

Siamese cats are a bit special and interesting though
Not that DCs aren't mind
just I think I've only known a siamese once in my lifetime and I was ever so young then.

Maybe your children are very dull. Kids are ten a penny really aren't they? - seen one seen them all. But Siamese cats are sooo unusual, how could they not take all the attention? Get a black and white moggy if you don't feel the same.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 26/04/2009 09:39

Bit at the turn this thread has taken!

Saying people don't want to talk to OPs children as they are boring and ugly is a bit stronger than the gentle ribbing so far!
