of the company of people who might turn out to be amazingly good friends.

Yes it is a thread about a thread. Sorry. But it's a serious point.

If you judge and dismiss people on the basis of what they put on their walls or where they live, doesn't that reduce the pool of potential friends and acquaintances, and experiences. And if you judge but don't speak or act on your judgements, or let them colour your actions, don't you eventually learn just how pointless such judgements actually are?

Just wondering. As I get older I get less judgemental, not more and I think my life is richer for it.

completely agree...there's very little i'm snobby about.

Thanks.

Just realised that OP sounded a bit pompous

Of course you are right.

But won't the case be that those posting on the other thread (including me) DON'T actually choose their friends on the basis of what their furniture is or if they have plastic windows?

Well that's what I mean. If you don't choose your friends on the basis of those judgements, don't you begin to realise how pointless they are.

But it was a light hearted thread about secret snobberies. Not a thread about why we despise other people. Although I do see that in another light it could be seen in that way.

OrmIrian · 25/04/2009 21:50

Of course it was light-hearted. But there are so many threads on MN about how we define and judge other people. It can't all be light-hearted.

OP posts:
junglist1 · 25/04/2009 21:55

It isn't all light hearted. I can take the p out of my chavvy accent and appearance, but it tends to get personal sometimes, with my intelligence being questioned more than once on here.

Nancy66 · 25/04/2009 22:03

I found the thread funny. I find I get more judgemental as I get older, not less and I am really, really, REALLY snobby about so many things. But I'd never not befriend anyone because of they had tattoos and shopped in Greggs.....I'd just slag them off on an internet forum instead

junglist1 · 25/04/2009 22:07

I take issue with the connection between tattoos and Greggs. I have 4 tats but my tastebuds are as effective as anyone elses

Nancy66 · 25/04/2009 22:09

An iced finger from Greggs is one of my guilty pleasures....100% pure chemical shit but very tasy.

junglist1 · 25/04/2009 22:11

Their sausage rolls are the mankiest thing I've ever tasted. Just pink mash and you can see the jelly . Oh my gosh I sound like a snobby chav now! Is that possible??

scottishmummy · 25/04/2009 22:26

link the other thread so i can decide if you are talking chuf or not

Salleroo · 25/04/2009 22:29

LOL Nancy. DH loves greggs sausage rolls. Then again I'm the snob in the family, he keeps me grounded

scottishmummy · 25/04/2009 22:31

what is the beef about greggs.love greggs.mmm

junglist1 · 25/04/2009 22:33

No beef with greggs. No bloody pork either

lilacclaire · 25/04/2009 22:33

Oh Junglist, are you serious, I love greggs sausage rolls, not that anyone in RL knows, because I am constantly 'healthy eating', but when i need to nip out for something.....
They are just the right temp for scoffing

blossomsmine · 25/04/2009 22:35

I totally agree!!!

I also agree with the fact that when you get older it makes you change your opinions on people.

I live in quite a small area and when i first had my babies, years ago!, there was a young mum also having her first baby...Well, most people in the village sneered their noses at her, she had abit of a wild past (!) but i had a garage sale and she came and bought a few bits. Anyway, over the years i always say hello and maybe ask after the kids. The other day a really close friend of mine happened to be with me when i exchanged greetings with this person and she was horrified that i actually talked to her!! I had to give her abit of a lesson in not taking people on what you have heard!!!

lilacclaire · 25/04/2009 22:38

Totally agree with what the thread is about.

My mum is always going on that i'll 'talk to anybody', she means that i'll talk to the people she doesn't think are good enought to breathe the same air as us.

You really do miss out on a wealth of people with that attitude.

Thunderduck · 25/04/2009 22:47

I did intend it to be a light hearted thread.

junglist1 · 25/04/2009 22:50

Reverse snobbery is also common. For example, I stand with the working class mums at school, the MC mums stand together. The WC mums have names for the MC mums, because they assume they're being looked down on. Some might be uppity, yes, but not all of them, the ones that take the time to say hi to me are obviously not snobby at all, because of my appearance (seriously)

Thunderduck · 25/04/2009 22:51

And all of us have prejudices. It doesn't make it right but I don't think anyone can say they are completely without bias. It's just a fun thread.
I haven't seen anything particuarly shocking yet.

BirdyArms · 25/04/2009 22:54

I posted on the other thread and thought that it was light hearted. I was coming from the point of view of things that I wouldn't do/say etc, I don't really give two hoots what other people do. However I would be embarassed if my rl friends saw the thread and so have to concede that it might not be a good thing (though it was fun Thunderduck).

hf128219 · 25/04/2009 22:55

Interesting.

I take people as they come - and am friends with whom I wish to be friends. I wouldn't rule out being friends with someone just because they lived in a council flat with net curtains - nor would I seek out to be friends with a pony loving 4x4 driver.
