Probably only a night time advert - japanese office worker (male) stumbles upon woman (presumably secretary) photocopying her vagina (straddling photocopier) followed by image of long thin biscuit being coated in chocolate (phallic/sex image?) and the tagline 'more than a little bit tempting' - Is it just me, or is that really sexist and gross?

offensive? I don't find it so. Clearly he's thinking WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?! [boggle]. I'm assuming she's got pants on, so hardly going to be seeing her fanjo.

It's one of those Terrible Misunderstanding things. I thought it quite amusing. I don't consider it sexist. But everyone is entitled to feel the way they feel so no, you are not BU, cos your feelings are as valid as anyone else's, but I can't say I share them at all.

RaspberryBlower · 20/04/2009 07:50

I haven't seen the short version, but I don't find the long version offensive.

The man does not appear to be turned on. He is a stern boss type and now he thinks she does this for fun.

And I am usually a card carrying member of the PC Brigade.

I made a formal complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) recently about the Virgin 25th Anniversary advert beause of the way it depicted female Virgin flght attendants. I have never done that before but I felt strongly about it. My comlaint was not upheld but the advert stopped a few weeks later anyway.

If you feel strongly about the Mikado biscuit advert you need to note the date, time and channel you saw it on and then click on the link below to make an online complaint to the ASA.

ASA Complaints form

In my view I would rather not see the Mikado advert but if the scene depicted were on after the 9.00 p.m watershed and it were say a scene in an episode of The Office I would not object and might well have found it funny. I think the context and time it is on are important.

PuppyMonkey · 20/04/2009 08:52

I've only ever seen the full biscuit advert and thought it quite funny.

I've never noticed the bit about long thin biscuits or her not wearing knickers. But then I hardly ever take proper notice of ads. Like most normal people.

MrsWeasley · 20/04/2009 09:03

Mikado biscuits are lush! A japanese friend used to get them for us, delicious.

Advert doesn't offend me but left me thinking about Health and Safety! All photocopying cupboards should have a step ladder.
But then again that could create a bigger problem.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 20/04/2009 09:06

Lol well! I guess IABU then. I saw it as 'girl photocopies bits, man sees her doing it and was tempted to fuck her by her posture.' That's how I thought it was sexist. Without seeing the full length ad it's hard not to see it that way but I see that the tagline refers to her being tempted by the biscuits which is not so offensive!

I think he was more pissed off about the fact she was nicking his biscuits if you ask me...

TheLadyEvenstar · 20/04/2009 09:20

LOL no not offended and I did find it funny, mind you thats coming from someone who has been caught in that position not nicking biscuits but getting a ream of paper down.......thankfully my boss was able to see the funny side.

wannaBe · 20/04/2009 09:29

haven't seen it but personally I think that people who get offended by adverts like this have nothing better to do.

My personal advice would be to get sky plus, that way you never have to watch any of them again.

SalopianGirl · 20/04/2009 10:54

Can't understand what all the fuss is about?
I thought the girl was kneeling on the photocopier not sitting on it legs spread as some posters seem to be insinuating?

fufflebum · 20/04/2009 11:03

No kKat2907 you are not BU. Both my husband and I thought it an inappropriate way to advertise these biscuits. I am not a prude by any stretch either (nor is my surname Whitehouse).

However I think if people miss the sexism it is a sad reflection of how we have internalised such behaviour into our culture. Would we think it appropriate for a man to be leaning over the photocopier copying his genitals?

I have not reported it to the ASA but it is the only advert I have ever seen that has made me think it should be.....

fgs it IS sexist everyone it just depends on whether or not you are offended a little or a lot by it. It has just been on funnily enough while I was reading this thread so I take it as a sign to report it . Thanks for the link abetadad.

southeastastra · 20/04/2009 11:14

i can think of other things to get het up about. not this though. i thought it was quite funny.

wem · 20/04/2009 11:22

I'm one of those that sees sexism everywhere, but I'm really struggling to see it in this! Unless you count using attractive women and vague suggestions of naughtiness as sexist, in which case half of all adverts are unacceptable! Which is a debatable point in itself, but this individual advert is hardly worth focussing on.

Wizzska · 20/04/2009 11:28

I'm really trying, but I can't seem to get het up about this. I'm with Wannabe on this one.

PinkTulips · 20/04/2009 11:29

ds1 who is 2 has announced.... 'i don't like that'

i thought it was quite funny

But sprogger, you could deconstruct a fairly hefty percentage of adverts in that way. I'm not saying you're incorrect to do so, but being disgusted by this particular advert seems a little strange?

5inthebed · 20/04/2009 11:40

Its an advert, nothing more. I found it quite funny, and clearly don't have time to analyse every little detail of it.

wem · 20/04/2009 11:41

I'm more disgusted by the oven cleaner advert with the smug woman saying "Even a man can use it!", which manages to be incredibly offensive to both men and women at the same time!

wem · 20/04/2009 11:43

here

wannaBe · 20/04/2009 11:45

actually I thought no phones could have their shutter sound turned off because of the risk of paedophiles using their phones to unknowingly take pictures of children.

Fgs it's an advert for biscuits. Chocolate ones at that - and oh, most women do happen to like chocolate biscuits. Or is admitting that sexist as well?

Seriously get a grip.
