To not want to leave my expensive pushchair in baby clinic waiting area.

organicgloop · 15/04/2009 15:04

I don't have a car and live within walking distance of the baby clinic. I use my pushchair to take baby to clinic, it's only small, but was told "they don't allow" pushchairs in the baby clinic and I'd have to leave in the waiting room of the doctors surgery.
I don't want to leave my pushchair in the waiting area as I won't be able to see it and it may get stolen. I also don't want to buy a sling as I won't use it enough to justify.
I didn't go to the clinic that day as I didn't want to risk the pushchair (area is okay, but I worry) or argue my case in front of the other parents who didn't seem to mind.
AIBU?

What do you lock it to in a waiting room? Some chairs?

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 21:59

Lock two wheels together?

Meglet · 15/04/2009 22:04

I used to lock mine to a radiator, threaded it through the weels too. I would have looped it through the raincover if I could.

FAQ, they wouldn't be scattered in the clinic as it takes a few seconds to strap a baby into a pushchair and take it with you.

In the clinics where you can take your pushchair in they aren't scattered, they are with the owners and unless the baby is being weighed or un/dressed the baby is usually in the pushchair.

The clinic with the patio doors insists on pushchairs being left unattended in the corridor... where they are actually scattered, and are a tripping hazard.

Tis a silly H&S rule and you won't convince otherwise as you most likely haven't even been there and are therefore guessing.. badly.

"FAQ, they wouldn't be scattered in the clinic as it takes a few seconds to strap a baby into a pushchair and take it with you."

You know the last thing I would be doing in the case of a fire would be messing around trying to strap my child into their pushchair - I sod the pushchair (no matter how much it cost me) and get OUT of the building.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to be battling past mums attempting to get their baby into a pushchair/trying to push buggy out in the process!

If the patio doors are fire doors they would be absolutely blasted if they were inspected at a time when x number of buggies were in the room "blocking" the access to it.

And I've never been anywhere with any of my DS's where pushchairs are allowed in and seen them all neatly to one side with their owners. Toddler groups, clinics, even cafes frequented by parents with buggies they are ALWAYS in the way.

I used to go to the mother and baby screenings at the cinema in Greenwich. It used to make me laugh to see the serried ranks of Bugaboos in the foyer. There were thousands of pounds worth of buggies out there, and not one ever got nicked. You'd have to be a very low sort of criminal to nick a baby's buggy.

buy 4.5m of cotton fabric at ikea (£2.99/m) and make your own sling then.

PrammyMammy · 15/04/2009 22:18

YANBU, Our clinic lets you take your buggy with you. I didn't even know this was an issue elsewhere. I wouldn't want to leave my pushchair, no matter how expensive, unattended.
I am expecting dc2 and i brought my ds old quinny buzz from the loft to clean it up, it was the older style one, had a bite mark in the bumper bar too so not in great condition. I cleaned it up and left it in the garden to dry and someone knicked it. Now i need to buy a new pushchair for dc2.
Could you ask someone to keep an eye on it? Is there a reception?

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:19

"You'd have to be a very low sort of criminal to nick a baby's buggy."

I've heard that the low sorts do exist...

MoreLikeMiranda · 15/04/2009 22:21

FAQ, you clearly struggled to comprehend my last sentence.

To clarify; I was making and Health & Safety comment about one particular clinic - unless you have been to the particular clinic I am referring to, your comments are purely assumptions and have no credibilty.

I did state in original post that H&S is vital and has it's place... but is being applied badly in this case.

If you have been to the clinic then I am prepared to eat humble pie and apologise... but I don't think that's going to happen.

I am over this point now...zzzz

NiceShoes · 15/04/2009 22:21

my friends bugaboo cameleon got stolen outside clinic. HV warned us about thefts

buy a bicycle lock.chain to bike rails or chain wheels together.don't understand why op getting a hard time here.it is her property after all.would you be so what if someone stole your £600+ bike/property

and i she choses a pricy buggy so what.no need to get snippy.maybe jealous?

FAQinglovely · 15/04/2009 22:24

no my point still stands - you don't fuck around in a fire strapping a baby/child into a pushchair - you get OUT.

Botbot · 15/04/2009 22:24

oops, double posted. And I should have said that as far as I know, not one ever got nicked during the time that I was attending the cinema. Got to be precise on these AIBU threads, haven't you?

doobry · 15/04/2009 22:25

YANBU it's crap. It doesn't matter how expensive or not your buggy is getting stuck without it to go home would be a nightmare. Are people so naive as to think that buggies don't get nicked? They do, just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It's hardly going to rate a headline in the 10 o clock news is it so how would you know? I have heard of several getting nicked around here and it's a very average kind of area.

I also think it's hilarious that people think you should plan your pushchair purchase around very infrequent clinic visits rather than its every day use. Er yep, that makes sense .

Having said all that there's not much you can do but go along with it. I do, and so far it's been ok.

Ewe · 15/04/2009 22:28

I don't think YABU for being annoyed but there is no reasonable solution so on that basis YABU.

I have a Stokke which is a quite expensive buggy and I have had to leave it loads of places as it is not reasonable to expect to take a whopping great pram everywhere. If anyone nicked it they'd never be able to collapse it though

Simplysally · 15/04/2009 22:32

YANBU - I hated leaving my pram outside the drs surgery and other places like theme parks/zoos (although I did in the end).

My sister had her handbag stolen off the back of my dd's buggy once so don't leave anything on there once it's out of your sight.

spicemonster · 15/04/2009 22:38

But the OP isn't talking about leaving it outside, she's talking about leaving it in the waiting room. God all you buggy bores piss me off - the bloody pushchairs are so big, there's no room to get people in the waiting room anymore!

ChippingIn · 15/04/2009 22:39

YANBU

What doobry said....

We have a Phil & Ted, not because it goes with my clothes (hell, none of them go together!!), simply because it suited our situation. I've had a few moments of worry when I've had to leave it somewhere (and felt too much of a numpty to want to put a lock on it ). So far I've been lucky - but I totally understand where you are coming from. Now that the LO is older and doesn't sleep in it, I take the old McLaren pretty much anywhere we might need to leave it, it still doesn't stop me crossing my fingers that it will still be there on our return!

cheesesarnie · 15/04/2009 22:43

yabu.you missed a clinic for your baby because you were worried about your buggy?????priorities!

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:47

Quite ironic, given that so many other threads on MN are saying "Step away from the baby clinic..."

angel1976 · 15/04/2009 22:50

We have a bugaboo chameleon (in our defence, it was a very classic first-time parent buy!) and I do leave it places (the baby clinic isn't in the most savoury of places!). My philosophy is if you have bought it, especially when you have spent a fortune on it, you got to get the best use out of it. It's kind of like buying a really nice engagement ring and refusing to wear it just in case... Then don't buy it!

Anyway, I figured that anyone who is desperate enough to steal a baby buggy either really needs it or will have such bad karma strike them that it really shouldn't happen. DS is 14 months old and fingers crossed, it hasn't gone walkies...

scotagm · 15/04/2009 22:51

Simple bike lock, from Halfords, about £8.

Just realised as Ii type, haven't used mine for about 9 months and can't remember the combibation.

Do remember, the first time I took ds to be weighed, had a complete hissy fit about having to leave the pushchair outside. Luckily, I was with much mre reasonable dp who made me see sense!

Seemed like a big deal at the time, but eventually got a £50 mothercare cheapo buggy. Couldn't care if anyone stole that (although I love it). Ds hates any pram/buggy so usually walk/carry any way.

spicemonster · 15/04/2009 22:53

Good point Habbibu - why does anyone bother going to baby clinics anyway? Surely there's something more fun you could be doing where you could keep your buggy in sight at all times?

giantkatestacks · 15/04/2009 22:55

I think people are getting aerated about it because leaving your buggy unattended crops up again and again, not just in the baby clinic.

So recently I have left mine in a museum in a buggy park, at a farm, outside someones front door, at the library at story time (all out of my sight) - I agree with the poster who said that this is normal usage for a buggy and so if you arent confident about doing it then just get a lock like you would do a bike. God knows what you would lock it to in most situations though...
