To not want to leave my expensive pushchair in baby clinic waiting area.

organicgloop · 15/04/2009 15:04

I don't have a car and live within walking distance of the baby clinic. I use my pushchair to take baby to clinic, it's only small, but was told "they don't allow" pushchairs in the baby clinic and I'd have to leave in the waiting room of the doctors surgery.
I don't want to leave my pushchair in the waiting area as I won't be able to see it and it may get stolen. I also don't want to buy a sling as I won't use it enough to justify.
I didn't go to the clinic that day as I didn't want to risk the pushchair (area is okay, but I worry) or argue my case in front of the other parents who didn't seem to mind.

Buy a padlock or bike lock - I know someone who had an expenisve buggy stolen.

I didn't bother with clinic with my second child anyway - its mainly for worried new mums. Just make sure you attend the hearing test etc.

Thanks, I'll have a search for the locks.
Buying an extra cheap buggy just for a few trips a year seems wasteful.
I'm just not willing to take the chance of leaving it and having to carry baby home in my arms.

buy a cheap pushchair for this child and keep the expensive pushchair for the second. From what I have been told you never bother taking the second to the health clinic anyway.

StarlightMcEggzie · 15/04/2009 15:15

What was that MillyR?

misdee · 15/04/2009 15:15

i took dd4 to baby clinic to day to get her weighed.

i need to buy disposable nappies and had no idea what size to buy her lol

theyoungvisiter · 15/04/2009 15:16

a cheap buggy is a good idea if you fly - I live in a very rough area and have never had a buggy stolen, despite leaving it outside numerous shops, parks etc, but it did get mashed by Stansted luggage handlers.

Sell your buggy and buy a useful one and a sling.

Frillysocks · 15/04/2009 15:16

Oh, nice lot of responses . What's wrong with someone wanting to look after their own belongings? Why is it unreasonable of the OP to worry about it getting stolen? Does it matter if it was expensive or not?

If she wrote to say her buggy had indeed been stolen from the baby clinic, would you still tell her to "get over herself", RyanAirVeteran and why should she get over herself?

FWIW I agree with you organicloop and hate leaving my buggy (average cost, and a present) in the hall at the babyclinic because I can't easily afford to replace it if it gets stolen - simple as that.

misdee · 15/04/2009 15:18

at least you dont have this one

psychomum5 · 15/04/2009 15:19

do you need to go get weighed that regularly??

and I have to say, why buy a buggy that you are too scared to let go of?? seems insane to me!

StarlightMcEggzie · 15/04/2009 15:20

Because a buggy is a tool first, fashion statement second.

If it doesn't allow you to participate in 'normal' society functions then it looses most of it's point.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 15/04/2009 15:20

thing is, if everyone left their buggy in the waiting room, it would be a massive trip hazard. it is not just the OPs clinic, it seems to be up and down the country

options are

don;t take a pushchair, use a sling or carry baby in arms

take a bike lock or other security measure

take a cheap stroller that if it did get stolen, you would not be breaking your heart over it

imagine baby clinic, running over 2 hours or so, with 20 + mums and their prams/ buggies.. it would be bedlam

smallorange · 15/04/2009 15:20

Judging by the pile of rotting fruit skins in the pocket and the dubious stains all over it, I don't think anyone would want to steal my buggy.

squeaver · 15/04/2009 15:20

Now there's a business idea: pushchair locks

islandofsodor · 15/04/2009 15:21

YANBU. I would never have dreamed of leaving my pushchair anywhere, even when I had a cheap old graco one.

Clinics and surgeries should be designed with pushchairs in mind.

nightingaley · 15/04/2009 15:21

YANBU
My pushchair was stolen from the bus, a tatty one was left in its place. The bus driver suggested I take the one the thief had left behind for me.
A nice area too, you never know and it does happen. Clinics should provide a secure area or padlocks.

verygreenlawn · 15/04/2009 15:21

Oh I've got one of those misdee, it's real class.

FAQinglovely · 15/04/2009 15:22

well look - the local sure start is in a not very nice area - you can't take your buggy inside and the "buggy park" is actually outside of the main entrance (to the right of it).

I don't know of anyone who's had their buggy stolen (could be wrong though) and my (not very cheap) Hauck was absolutely fine there on several occasions.

Inside a waiting room I don't really see the issue with - sorry.

theyoungvisiter · 15/04/2009 15:23

urg - that $4000 buggy is DISGUSTING! It looks like it was designed by Posh Spice's more chavvy 10 year old niece.

islandofsodor · 15/04/2009 15:24

I have to say though I've never had a problem anywhere I've been and I lived in two differnet areas with my dc.

I always wheeled the pram or pushchair right into the consulting/weighing/injections whatever rooms.

I used to use a bike lock for mine. Have left it more than a few times too, our docs you have to leave outside, off the main street. I have seen £600 buggies left outside, never heard of one nicked. I am OK about leaving buggies outside but struggled carrying newborn twins through 2 heavy doors with my change bag and red book! Gave up going after a couple times!
