To not want to leave my expensive pushchair in baby clinic waiting area.

organicgloop · 15/04/2009 15:04

I don't have a car and live within walking distance of the baby clinic. I use my pushchair to take baby to clinic, it's only small, but was told "they don't allow" pushchairs in the baby clinic and I'd have to leave in the waiting room of the doctors surgery.
I don't want to leave my pushchair in the waiting area as I won't be able to see it and it may get stolen. I also don't want to buy a sling as I won't use it enough to justify.
I didn't go to the clinic that day as I didn't want to risk the pushchair (area is okay, but I worry) or argue my case in front of the other parents who didn't seem to mind.

ooh op i know who you are you big stirrer

StarlightMcEggzie · 15/04/2009 19:35

LOL - Oh well. I tried. You can't expect me to keep up with the MN soap opera of who is friends with who. I thought you had bonded over the curriculum issue, but I guess I was wrong. Sorry to have bothered you with it.

hazeyjane · 15/04/2009 19:39

My old doctors had to change policy on this because people had had pushchairs, and stuff from pushchairs stolen. I used to leave my crappy pushchair outside, but was glad they had changed the policy when i had dd2, because the thought of struggling in with a 14 month old and a newborn and no buggy, or leaving my secondhand (but still expensive!) Phil and Teds outside.

Some of you are being very harsh though, why the hell shouldn't someone buy an expensive buggy if they want to, also I seem to recall not having a clue about stuff like this when I first had a baby (otherwise I wouldn't have bought a stupid bloody travel systemXmas Smile)

See, - soap opera!

FAQinglovely · 15/04/2009 19:44
  • no we didn't really talk that much - we cross on MN but not much more

YANBU - at our local baby clinic, one mum had her new expensive bugaboo stolen from the waiting area (doctors surgery) INSIDE! And it isn't a particularly rich/poor area - just normal. I guess people just see the opportunity and seize it.

Can you borrow a cheap buggy or get one off Ebay?

Meglet · 15/04/2009 19:52

Yanbu. I have a lock for mine.
Pushchairs were occasionally stolen from my local baby clinic. They let us take them in now.

differentID · 15/04/2009 19:53

I translated slightly.

OP, I can understand where you're coming from and maybe a bike lock is an answer. Could you not fold it down and stash it in the corner of the waiting area? People may be less likely to pay attention to a folded pushchair hidden away than a fully open one that they can see everything on.

curlygal · 15/04/2009 19:55

Buggies get stolen all the time - in fact I am sure that I have read several posts on here on that very topic?

I've always used a bike lock to lock mine to something solid if I ever had to leave it eg downstairs in my flat or at the swimming pool or at the supermarket etc. Currently I have a charity shop maclaren but I still lock it up as I need it and would be gutted if someone nicked it

Definitely buy a bike lock for it

Meglet · 15/04/2009 20:05

I used to do my shopping after baby clinic as I didn't want to leave the shopping where people could pinch it.

Combination bike locks are good, no key to lose!

alittlebittired · 15/04/2009 20:08

I do think clinics should be more family freindly, but there is usually only a finite amount of space. YANBU to worry about it, but YABU to consider taking it in. Buy a lock and get a sling - you are lucky to be able to do this - I had to cart my twins into clinic after C Section in their car seats as unable to take (or even fit) buggy into clinic. Think I would have hit roof at this time if I saw mum with single buggy breaking the rules just because their buggy was expensive!!

Baisey · 15/04/2009 20:11

This is refreshing, the amount of parents that will leave their buggys in my shop WITH handbags attatched, its quite nice to know some people worry about them lol.
As for at the clinic, if someone wanted to steal my huge cumbersome graco monstrosity (sp?) then they could bloody well try I think I would of caught them three times over by the time they had managed to get away!

lisad123 · 15/04/2009 20:50

i ont think yabu, but simple answer is a bike lock. I took my costly buggy to the science muesum and when we went into the kiddies water bit we had to leave buggies outside and round the corner. I took one front and one back wheel off

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 21:01

My goodness - what a bunch of grumpy mean responses! It is odd how people get so utterly riled over what people pay for a buggy, but don't get too upset over what people spend on cars/houses/clothes, etc.

Bike lock perfectly reasonable solution, you bunch of old meanies.

op; i know exactly how you feel, the only option is to buy a cheap buggie for clinic visits...that's what i would do.

poppy34 · 15/04/2009 21:30

am with habbibu and shineon etc-get a combi lock -fwiw yanbu (and I'm speaking as cheapy pushchair owner) -there has been a spate of pushchair thefts around here (and wonder how amusing peopel would find it if they came out to go home and found no buggy )

MoreLikeMiranda · 15/04/2009 21:31

YANBU!!!!

I was told the same for "health and saftey reasons" nonsense.

I have been to clinics like this and yes my beautiful Quinny cost £300. You wouldn't leave anything else this valuable and vulnerable to theft outside.

For the record I know Health and Saftey is vital, not disagreeing with that. But the clinic which I attened said that it was in case of fire; said clinic has two patio doors leading straight out of the room onto the car park.... are they really going to send us back down the corridor, into the waiting room and back out the main doors if there is a fire?!?!

Northernlurker · 15/04/2009 21:38

op - i had the same problem with our surgery so the few times I had to go I took dd3 in the sling and then went to another place for health visitor drop in - where I could keep the pram with me.

Unfortunately the amount you spent on a pram seems to be one of the many, many things you can be lambasted for on mumsnet......not that I mind a bit of lambasting as such - quite happy to swing in myself as needed but all this 'just carry the baby in your teeth or use a wonky wheeled pushchair you inherited from your aunt who bought it at an NCT sale in 1979! Anything else is MADNESS'
Well it gets a bit wearing to us Bugaboo owners!

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 15/04/2009 21:49

you're being horrible - it doesn't matter if it's a cheapy buggy or not some twat might well still steal. My sister and I have both had knackered old maclarens stolen. At my clinic we were told we had to leave our pushchairs in the 'buggy park' which was outside and essentially just a kind of open sided bus shelter with no protection from the elements. I have never left mine out there and the receptionists give me a look but don't dare say anything. I get it if your child is old enough to walk but little babes who can't yet walk should be allowed to stay in their pushchairs.

FAQinglovely · 15/04/2009 21:53

it's a health and safety issue because in the case of a fire 20 odd pushchair scattered across the room become yet another obstacle to get around when trying to get out (or in the case of the fire crew to get in).

EldonAve · 15/04/2009 21:56

The OP hasn't been asked to leave it outside on the street

She is supposed to leave it in "the waiting room of the doctors surgery" instead of taking it into the baby clinic room
