Am I being unreasonable: I get annoyed when people think they can put their grubby hands in my pram and touch my DS!

Does this happy to anyone else? You are out/on the bus/walking in the park. Someone comes to chat or starts talking to DS, he smiles being the lovely sociable baby...and they stick their hands in/stroke his hand/touch his face/put his dummy in!!!

Has anyone said anything? It usually happens so fast, I'm not quick enough.....

anyone?

I think YABU given his age, if he was a tiny newborn I would be pissed off. I don't mind people stroking my 8 month old DS's cheek or hand, I am not keen on them fingering his bottom lip as some people have done, like you said you don't know where their hands have been (i.e. been for a dump and not washed their hands, it happens). I may be a bit irrational and he is a PFB but there we are.

YaddaYaddaYadda · 06/04/2009 20:35

Personally I hated it when people tried to touch DD when she was a baby. What's wrong with smiling and pulling funny faces?

And (this may make me sound like a loon but I don't care) why should DD who was too little to say no have to put up with smelly strangers invading her personal space?

Shambolic · 06/04/2009 20:36

And yes it always was old ladies

Although would be equally as happy for DD to be patted by anyone of any gender, age, race, religious persuasion, erm running out now...

salt101 · 06/04/2009 20:36

sorry....I'm new at this....what is pfb?

shambolic...thanks- will look at that link!

Wigglesworth Off- colour remark coming up .... I thought you said "fingering his bottom"

screamingabdab · 06/04/2009 20:38

Shambolic OLDER ladies, please

Shambolic · 06/04/2009 20:43

Precious first born!

abdad, no sorry, these are definitely old ladies. Pink rinses and shopping trollies and doddering and false teeth and everything

Wigglesworth · 06/04/2009 20:46

Screaming- to clarify I would also probably object to that too.

screamingabdab · 06/04/2009 20:47

LOL

(to feed the cat)

salt101 · 06/04/2009 20:50

Yadda..I totally agree. I was beginning to feel like I am in the lion's den here...

I can see where you are coming from, but YABU. It is lovely for a child to feel part of a society that warmly welcomes new babies. We are always moaning in this country how children are not made to feel welcome!
I loved it when people would stop and coo over my baby and still do now even though he is 2.
Try not to think of the germs and the positive benefits of social interaction to your DS.
(The 60% with 'contaminated' hands must not include your family and friends then?)

DunderMifflin · 06/04/2009 20:55

I like people to interact with my DC - hair stroking, cheek chucking, silly faces; bring it on!

But, I'll now be more aware when I want to do this to other squidgers and will ask...

salt101 · 06/04/2009 20:57

obviously the 40% who have 'clean' hands are all people I know!!!!

OP posts:
Portoeufino · 06/04/2009 21:01

I remember that it could be annoying sometimes, especially where every little old lady stopped you for an admire, and you answer the same questions over and over...

...and then there reaches a point where there are other new babies, and yours isn't so interesting anymore and no-one bothers to stop you and tell you how beautiful she is....and you MISS it!

ellingwoman · 06/04/2009 21:10

Why are strangers 'grubby' and 'smelly'? I'm a stranger and I'm not grubby or smelly.

screamingabdab · 06/04/2009 21:14

Portoeufino bloody old ladies, wanting to talk to people and admire their babies ...how very dare they?

(see my earlier posts for clarification)

Shambolic · 06/04/2009 21:16

screaming abdab I wasn't expecting you to be back so soon from feeding the "cat".

I assumed that you actually had about 50.

screamingabdab · 06/04/2009 21:18

Actually, was also fixing myself a nice bowl of warming soup

ilovesprouts · 06/04/2009 21:22

hey my hands are ALWAYS CLEAN i carry anti bac hand gel all the time no im not ott just use for nappy change etc

Shambolic · 06/04/2009 21:25

I carry anti-bac gel with me so that if I see a baby I want to pat I can sterilise it first.

They are nasty germ ridden things...

Shambolic · 06/04/2009 21:26

abdab will you be having a small sherry shortly then off to bed?

HaventSleptForAYear · 06/04/2009 21:30

at Shambolic.

screamingabdab · 06/04/2009 21:32

Sherry, Shambolic what do you take me for? I shall be having a nice cup of Ovaltine and a bourbon biscuit.

anonandlikeit · 06/04/2009 21:33

I think tis lovely when people want to tell me how lovely my babies are & give them a loving touch.

Really what harm does it do, unless your baby is severe immunity problems I think its all a bit OTT.

Smile, enjoy your baby, let others enjoy your ds too.

Baisey · 06/04/2009 21:34

Awwe I thought it was great when people cooed over my son. He doesnt get so much nice attention anymore, I have no idea why... the permanent drool and snot running down the lower half of his face is rather endearing if you ask me... (he's 2 and a bit!)
