to be surprised and disappointed at some of the attitudes to food and weight I have seen here?

I have a high opinion of Mners.
On the whole, I think Mn is populated by intelligent and often extremely witty people.

However, I have read many posts from women who want to achieve or maintain an unrealistic weight.

I am SO disappointed by this I can't tell you. I was kind of in denial of how obsessed women are by their appearance. This has really got to me. If intelligent women feel this way, is there any hope for our daughters?

OP posts:
thatsnotmymonster · 02/04/2009 19:32

Really I haven't seen any. What would you say an unrealistic weight is? Also how do you judge it if you have never seen the person?

flowerybeanbag · 02/04/2009 19:36

I can't remember ever seeing a post from anyone saying their weight or what weight they want to be, tbh.

Oh except we had a 'how much do you weigh' thread a few months ago iirc.

I second thatsnotmymonster - how do you know it is unrealistic?

PinkTulips · 02/04/2009 19:42

can't say i've seen any posts like that.

lots of posts by women claiming to be overweight though.

TrillianEAstraEgg · 02/04/2009 19:42

crazydiamond - do you think the OP meant: you are largely witty and intelligent, except those who are trying to attain unrealistic weights?

I thought she meant: you are witty and intelligent so why are you worried about trying to obtain unrealistic weights?

Either way, I haven't noticed it

MANATEEequineOHARA · 02/04/2009 19:43

Actually, people with eating disorders tend to be of higher intellegence . Not that is a good thing to screw about with your health and weight in any way, but eating disorders 'start' at the level of EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise recognised) which encompasses all kinds of strange quirks with food right up to being anorexic in weight and behaviour yet still having periods. My point being, a lot of people are at the 'almost normal yet still have food issues' end of EDNOS, and food and body image are far more complex issues than just having sensible expectations.

morningpaper · 02/04/2009 19:43

I haven't noticed such posts although I tend to avoid the weight ones

letswiggle · 02/04/2009 19:43

I disagree, I'm rather surprised that it seems to be so unacceptable to express a desire to be thin, and am also disappointed that people seem to think that being fat's just fine. I've seen lots of comments here like: "I'm a healthy size 24". If you're size 24 you're obese and at an increased risk of most serious disease. It's not healthy.

SheekLaSheak · 02/04/2009 19:44

I saw a worrying one the other day

nickytwotimes · 02/04/2009 19:48

I've seen quite a few in the past. People desperately tryng to be at the bottom end of normal weight range by starving themselves. FIne to be skinny if that is your default position, but otherwise not healthy.
I find it pretty depressing tbh.

I haven't seen any posts like that - women wanting to be unrealistically thin - TBH. People don't usually say their height/weight and what their goal is they just say they want to lose weight.

What I have seen is loads of random and odd diets being trotted out etc. Exactly the same as real life.

I avoid those conversations in real life and I avoid them on here.

Goober · 02/04/2009 19:57

I'm on a diet.
Have been for 2 months.
I have a target weight.
I am doing it because I was bordering on obese.
I don't want to die.
I am not a vain person.

moondog · 02/04/2009 20:00

I agree with Letswiggle.
My particular bugbear is people who describe themseles as 'curvy' when they are fat.

FAQinglovely · 02/04/2009 20:00

I'm curvy - and not fat - unfortunately the "curves" are in all the wrong places

anonupset · 02/04/2009 20:01

Curvy doesn't always mean fat though does it.

Mumcentreplus · 02/04/2009 20:01

Is there a particular post/thread you speak of Beaver?...

MrsMattie · 02/04/2009 20:02

God, we've got 'women who wear clothes that are too small', 'Sarah brown is fat and wears horrible clothes'....how many more nasty attacks on other women and their appearance shall we have tonight then, 'sisters'?

moondog · 02/04/2009 20:03

Ah, I see.
Because we are women and part of the sisterhood we must never be critical or challenge each other.

Riiiiiight.....

most people don't even realise I'm the weight I am...I have never been my ideal weight and when I was most people that knew me were worried because I looked sick..the BMI has alot to answer for imo

fattiemumma · 02/04/2009 20:04

im a fat size 24.

no one ever believes me though

Doodle2U · 02/04/2009 20:05

Go Goober!

Mumcentreplus · 02/04/2009 20:06
