ok fair eough we all have things we like spending money on, a friend of ours has brought a bottle for his 40th birthday.

i know its a special occasion and all but it just seems almost immoral to me.

however we spend money on things like holidays meals out etc, so perhaps iabu

I can't imagine ever doing that, but it's their money and if they will enjoy the wine then why not?

namechangerforareason · 02/04/2009 11:14

His money his choice im afraid so yeah IMO YABU

Each to their own!

Sorrento · 02/04/2009 11:20

We had a £500 bottle on our honeymoon and it tasted like nectar from the gods, absolutely beautiful, so if the company was paying I wouldn't mind a glass of £12k wine yum yum

FAQinglovely · 02/04/2009 11:22

His money - he can spend it on what he likes - I'd only judge if he was going into debt to buy his prize purchase

qwertpoiuy · 02/04/2009 11:22

How big is the bottle? It would want to be huge for that price.
Imagine if he accidentally dropped the bottle and it smashed to smithereens and all that expensive wine gone - I've seen it happen to cheap wine.

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 11:25

well i thought i was being aa bit unfair.

je also loves buying books, old collectable ones.
the last one he brought was about 1.2k, becausd it was one of the first printed or something.
but you could buy a new one for about 20 quid.
i know its not one of the orginial ones but the book is stil the same imo.

think what i find outrageous about the wine is just the fact its gone within hours if that

his money, his choice.
yabu

mumblechum · 02/04/2009 11:27

It's up to him what he spends his money on imo. The most I've ever spent on a bottle of wine was £350 for a special occasion.

£12k would be a waste imo if he's just going to keep it as an investment. Much better to drink it.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/04/2009 11:28

People buy bottles of wine as investments because they will increase in money. So no not oscene and if I had the money I would buy rare first editions.

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 11:28

i think its normal size.

OP posts:
JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 11:30

he is going to drink it.

but he says that about the books, they are a good investment.

Alibabaandthe40bunnies · 02/04/2009 11:34

The books are a good investment, and there is IMO something a little magical about first editions of things that have gone on to become classics. I have a few myself and I treasure them.

The wine - YABU. If he can afford it then why not? I bet it would be amazing to drink.

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 11:45

it's funny because if he spent the same amount on a car or a holiday or something i wouldn't think anything of it.

which i suppose is pretty unfair really.

Ledodgy · 02/04/2009 11:46

Wow that's 2 grand a glass!

titchy · 02/04/2009 11:47

And it's 'bordering'!

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 12:11

lol
thanks for that.

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 12:11

mind you if he offered me a glass i wouldn't mind a try lol

EasterBunnysWizzskas · 02/04/2009 12:24

Lucky him to be able to afford it. It wouldn't really bother me as long as his kids aren't going without shoes to pay for it.

Where did he bring it from? [slaps self for being a pedant].

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 12:31

he's not well off he's a graphic designer on uk average salary.

None of your business.

A friend of mine spends humungous amounts of money going to the World Cup every four (or is it three?) years. That's the very last thing on earth I'd spend my money on, but it makes him happy.

onepieceofcremeegg · 02/04/2009 12:34

I thought the thread title said £12 and even then for us that is quite a lot!

Tell your friend that you can get 3 for £10 in Tesco.

OrmIrian · 02/04/2009 12:38

No worse than spending that much on anything else.

is he actually going to drink it? or is it just an investment thing maybe?

wannaBe · 02/04/2009 12:40

wouldn't you like to try it though?

Just to see if a 12 grand bottle of wine really tastes that much better than one you could buy for a tenner?

I think it's all relative.

You spend the money on whatever you like. I wouldn't spend 12k on a bottle of wine, but I would spend it on a diamond. and others would spend it on a holiday (which will be over in a couple of weeks) or a car (which will depreciate as soon as you drive it off the forecourt...

Shambolic · 02/04/2009 12:43

£12K for a bottle of wine is obscene really. Like when those city boys/footballers go out and run up huge bar bills.

Bottles of wine like this are for mulit-millionaires looking for things to spend their money on. Like incredibly expensive restaurants - the food is very nice, yes, but not thousand and thousands nice. The extra cash is for the exclusivity...

i once had some of a bottle of £600 wine and it was nice - and if you're into wine a few hundred is one thing - but £12,000! Wow.
