ok fair eough we all have things we like spending money on, a friend of ours has brought a bottle for his 40th birthday.

i know its a special occasion and all but it just seems almost immoral to me.

however we spend money on things like holidays meals out etc, so perhaps iabu

and i was the only one who understood where her friend was coming from - as my friend does it as well

seems a bit weird that they say they cant afford children ( well who can ) yet spends 12k on 750ml of liquid

def try and get a glass or a mouthful or 2!!

12k would pay a chunk off my mortgage

MintyyAeroEgg · 02/04/2009 17:13

Galava can afford to buy a £12,000 bottle of wine: tick, duly noted Galava, just incase you thought no one had noticed .

Hulababy · 02/04/2009 17:31

YABU

His money, his choice - so long as not going into debt for it, and he and his parter agree it is a good thing for them to do.

I'd definitely have a try if offered.

Lizzylou · 02/04/2009 17:35

Lol @ Minty

I could afford a £12k bottle of wine too

If I sold a kidney (and then I'm not sure too much alcohol would be advisable)

I think it is a very strange thing to do and not really in keeping with their lifestyle, but love to see if it's as good as Tesco Finest Chablis (barg at £7).

Shambolic · 02/04/2009 17:53

It's alright minty, I'd already noted that on my spreadsheet

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 21:33

i don't think his gf agrees as such, they have seperate finances.

My BIL has an amazing wine collection like and is very generous about sharing it all - so I am always far too smashed to have a clue whether it's Jacobs Creek from the corner shop or Petrus whatever for thousands of quid. And sometimes a nice cold lager is just the ticket.

Shambolic · 02/04/2009 22:11

if I was his GF I would certainly have quite a lot to say about it...

£12 grand? Come off it....

NormaJeanBaker · 02/04/2009 22:57

What a lot of sour grapes. I'm off for a nice glass of cheapo whine. Goodnight ladies.

georgiemum · 03/04/2009 11:49

Hopefully the grapes weren't sour!

where'd the bunnies go?

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 03/04/2009 11:55

well...I think 12K is a rather obscene amount of money to spend on a bottle of wine....however.
So, YANBU imo

OrmIrian · 03/04/2009 12:01

I wish this thread would go away. It's just after midday, I'm in work and I have a long time to go and lots of things to do before I can crack open a bottle.

Perhaps I shall hide it.

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 03/04/2009 12:04

lol...once you post on it it won't hide...will it?

babyignoramus · 03/04/2009 12:08

I read that as £12, which would probably be more than I would would spend!!

I am a tight-arsed cow though

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 03/04/2009 12:13

lol baby....12 squids would be more than I would spend....it's more 3 for a tenner in this household

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/04/2009 14:22

oh yes

3 for £10

echo falls in iceland

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 03/04/2009 14:41

well...maybe 12K is really a bargain afterall...Shock

missorinoco · 03/04/2009 14:44

another one who read the title as £12, but then wondered what kind of holiday you could take for that (and luckily twigged at that point.)

those of you who've had a bottle over £100, can you indulge a pregnant red wine lover and tell me how it tasted. could you taste a difference from a £30 bottle for example?

thread hijack over btw.

Eve4Walle · 03/04/2009 14:48

What a waste of money and I love wine!

Each to their own, but I'd have been a bit too so YANBU.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/04/2009 14:52

missorinoco i tried a bottle of £600 champaygne - it wasnt that nice

stick with what you know and like

independiente · 03/04/2009 15:01

YANBU. (IMO)
I don't understand the 'oh, it'll be a really special bottle of wine' line. No bottle of wine (let's fact it, we're talking something that's going to be ingested, then excreted as urine) is going to be 12k 'special', come on - that's just being ridiculous!

MollieO · 03/04/2009 15:34

Fine if you have the money but if you had that sort of money why would you be living in a two bedroom terrace?

Jenbot · 03/04/2009 16:23

Maybe he has weeks to live. Sorry, as that's dark, but it crossed my mind.

Botbot · 03/04/2009 20:44

Babyignoramus, I thought exactly the same! When I was a student I had a French flatmate who regularly bought £12 bottles of wine, and I remember thinking that when I grew up I'd spend that much too.

[glances at glass of 5 quid M&S 'wine of the month' sitting next to her, nearly 20 years later]

caramelwaffle · 03/04/2009 21:28

I would spend £12k on a diamond. I could pass this on to my daughter.

But £12k on a bottle of wine if I had the same finances as this gentleman? No.
But if I were given the bottle of wine
it would be all mine. All mine I say!! mwaaa ha haaaaarrrrr (yum)
(a nice trickle of Balsamic for my salad)
