ok fair eough we all have things we like spending money on, a friend of ours has brought a bottle for his 40th birthday.

i know its a special occasion and all but it just seems almost immoral to me.

however we spend money on things like holidays meals out etc, so perhaps iabu

I've just spent 1/10th of that on a 2 week holiday in the sun. And I thought that was too expensive!

risingstar · 02/04/2009 12:49

as a real pleb I have to say £12000

surely must have serious money to consider it, but if he is seriously wealthy, isn't it a bit plebby to go around telling his friends how much it cost

Shambolic · 02/04/2009 12:52

If you are offered a glass (is it likely?) you should deffo drink it! Once in a lifetime to have a taste of something like that!

{Is jazzhands here BTW }

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 12:56

hi jazzhands

i tried to tell him co-op lambrusco is nice lol
but he wouldn't have it.

ROFL jean...

I hope is wine isn't corked or anything - always a risk with a wine that age (assume it must be old! Or maybe just in a gold bottle...)

SalBySea · 02/04/2009 13:05

If he gets lots of pleasure outta it then why not?

I would spend lots of money on art if I had the cash.

CherryChoc · 02/04/2009 13:07

I think it's ridiculous that wine can be worth that much in the first place - but his money, he can spend it how he likes!

I think the reason you wouldn't be so bothered if he'd bought a car or a holiday is that both seem worth more - for a car you have to pay for the parts, the design, engineering, assembly, extras, etc... but wine... someone's just picked some grapes and stamped on them!

MrsMerryHenry · 02/04/2009 13:11

YANBU. What a bunch of politically correct wimps you lot are! Yeah, it's his choice, that goes without saying, but £12k on a bottle of wine is absurd!

My fave restaurant has an exclusive (i.e. not for us plebs) wine list like this, and we giggled with the waiters about what would happen if they slipped and dropped a bottle...

Shambolic · 02/04/2009 13:11

I think the thing with the wine is it's gone so quickly! So not like art etc which will give you pleasure for years, it's £12K for a couple of drinks...

Mooseheart · 02/04/2009 13:14

Sorry, but 12K for a bottle of wine is obscene. I love wine and have been known to splash out many a VERY nice bottle.. but 12K? You'd have to be obscenely rich or obscenely stupid...

YANBU.

Mooseheart · 02/04/2009 13:15

I heart MrsThierryHenry.

MrsMerryHenry · 02/04/2009 13:21

Mooseheart

"You'd have to be obscenely rich or obscenely stupid..." - err, don't you mean both?

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 13:49

i bet he won't even get pissed on one bottle either
lol

i should have told him to get at least two!

Shambolic · 02/04/2009 13:54

He could tuck into some co-op lambrusco after!

Tell him if he provides the first bottle you will provide the next 5

MintyyAeroEgg · 02/04/2009 13:54

He sounds like an absolutel twat tbh. £12,000 on himself, for his 40th?!?!?! What a silly little person he must be. Sorry, you obviously like him, but REALLY!

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 13:59

lol
i would have to provide the next million bottles

he does make me laugh.

I'm with MrsTH, I'd love to say well its his choice... but GET A GRIP its a bottle of wine!

JeanPoole · 02/04/2009 14:06

if he was loaded i could understand more, but it's almost half his annual income

OP posts:
NorbertDentressangle · 02/04/2009 14:06

If you've got the money I guess theres no harm in spending it on yourself but...on 1 bottle of wine .

I love my red wine but you can get lovely ones for £5 a bottle no problem

If I had had that sort of money to celebrate my 40th I would have gone on a lovely holiday with my family or have had a huge party for friends and family (providing shed loads of wine at a lot less than £12K a bottle!)

georgiemum · 02/04/2009 14:08

The chap in our local wine shop says that lots of people keep wines as an investment - and not really to drink. Aparently, when really rich people lose their jobs they sell the wine collection (less obvious than pawning the tiara I expect). A big market for the wine is China... where it is popular to drink mixed with cola, or fruit juice.

I have tasted some very expensive wines... supposedly great vintage... but they weren't all that fantastic. Of course Bolinger is a different matter all together...

ForeverOptimistic · 02/04/2009 14:09

His money he can do what he wants with it.

I would be secretly hoping that he accidently drops it and doesn't actually get to drink a drop. To spend that amount of money on a bottle of wine is obscene.
