To ask my local mothercare if they could give me a nappy for my soiled dd ?

Lilyloo · 28/03/2009 21:23

Basically i got caught out without enough nappies today.
Teething etc lot's of soiled nappys.
I ask at the till if they can provide a nappy and am told no!
I didn't have the £8.99 for a 24 pack but was a bit surprised tbh.

Well, then, guess it would be a good idea to keep a pack of nappies in the basket of the buggy for those trips then, FAQ, rather than expect there to be a freebie to hand when you get caught out.

Bit like going on a hillwalk without water.

ScottishMummy · 28/03/2009 21:47

yes anyone can get caught out,but your child you cannot assume or hope shop will help out

supermarket own brand don't cost £8.99 for a small pkt?why not go to sainsbury etc

or by all means tyr asking another mum in change area.yes i would help out in that situation, any mum would

my point is yes, unfortunately you got caught out.store does not necessarily have to help out

expatinscotland · 28/03/2009 21:48

Still think it's BU to ask for a nappy, tbh.

Wouldn't have crossed my mind to do that.

As you can see on this thread, some people think it's unreasonable, others don't.

EnterStageLeft · 28/03/2009 21:49

I suppose it's the difference between those who think the world owes them a living and those who don't.

monkeypinkmonkey · 28/03/2009 21:49

erm, my ds is only 3 and when he was in nappies all our local mothercares provided nappies and wipes. has this changed? I do think its good customer service, it's not as if they don't expect it! I understand the money issue but again why shop i mothercare when so many other places to shop if only for the fact they 'understand' mothers!

2shoes · 28/03/2009 21:49

Lilyloo did you buy anthing before you asked?

Lilyloo · 28/03/2009 21:50

Scottish i didn't 'assume' but rather 'hoped' they would help out.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 28/03/2009 21:50

My DS had a nasty injury last week and we scopped him up and flew to A&E. We had NOTHING, they gave us everything, nappy, food etc. Sometimes these things just happen!

theyoungvisiter · 28/03/2009 21:50

I was also at a wedding recently where a lady was galloping around the tables during the reception shouting "anyone got a size 3 nappy?"

I haven't [touch wood] ever had to do that but I would completely not hesitate to ask another mum (or several if necessary). In fact that would probably be my first thought, rather than the shop.

Expat, I think you're being a bit harsh - I think the OP did have nappies but ran out as her DD did more poos than was reasonable...

ravenAK · 28/03/2009 21:51

Sorry Lilyloo - I'm on dc3 too & find I'm much proner to forget nappies & what have you than with just one...

...I just have a prejudice against Mothercare as purveyors of unnecessary overpriced crap to the hormonal & sleep-deprived

FAQinglovely · 28/03/2009 21:51

expat - to be fair to the OP (and btw I don't think it was unreasonable to ask, and also not unreasonable for them to say no) she does say that she used needed to do 4 nappy changes in a very short trip (presumably the 4th one was the one she was unable to do because the 3 nappies she took with her weren't enough).

I've never taken more than 2 nappies with me on a short trip out with a toddler, often only one as they usually don't need changing that often.

The OP asked if she was being unreasonable to ask - and no I don't think she was. Some shop do indeed provide free nappies so not unreasonable to ask if the particular store she was in did.

Lilyloo · 28/03/2009 21:52

''I suppose it's the difference between those who think the world owes them a living and those who don't.''

Why ??????

2 shoes I asked at the till as i was paying for something.

thetoddlermaimer · 28/03/2009 21:52

hi! i went into mothercare a coupe of months ago and they provided me with a nappy...ds had been caugh short (stomach bug it seems) and we were potty training at the time. we were in there buying tops and they provided me with wipes and a bag too...although i did have these. she said it was part of the service. maybe it just depends upon the store. apparently they keep spares in the cupboard just incase!
how old is your DC?

expatinscotland · 28/03/2009 21:52

LOL. Yes, expat is always the harsh one.

Enterstageleft and ScottishMummy trump me in that any day.

But bring it on, I'm well used to it.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2009 21:53

FAQ, it's AIBU.

IMO, yes.

Not only in mine, but here we go again . . .

AIBU.

Shrugs.

Wilts · 28/03/2009 21:54

We honestly wouldn't have batted an eyelid when asked for a nappy when I worked there.

It is obviously at the discretion of each store manager by the sounds of it.

Personally I can't see the problem in asking if you are caught short when out, as long as you don't make a fuss if a shop says no.

Lilyloo · 28/03/2009 21:54

She is 14mths and as today has proved seems we are getting another tooth!

OP posts:
theyoungvisiter · 28/03/2009 21:55

LOL, yes you're well 'ard Expat!

it was the comment about going hillwalking without any water that I thought was a bit unfair as she had expressly said that she had taken lots of nappies. Have no ishoo with your disagreement in principle

BitOfFun · 28/03/2009 21:55

I think it would be pretty good business f they gave them out on request, even if they don't advertise the fact. It is simple psychology that it would create loyal customers and it would make the consumer feel "beholden" - that's why insurance companies etc have a "free gift" for even enquiring: it is proven to work! It creates good will. YANBU.

ScottishMummy · 28/03/2009 21:56

expat dont get me embroiled in your spats.you are a big enough lassie to handle yerself

expatinscotland · 28/03/2009 21:56

Ach, I ken that, SM, but I give credit where it's due an a' .

You always put it better than I do, IMO.

Lilyloo · 28/03/2009 21:56

Expat fair enough!!
I rarely paost threads in here but just wondered tbh!

However enterstage that has left me I do not expect anyone to owe me a living nor does my 14mth old teething dd as far as i know!!!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 28/03/2009 21:57

I never saw them in the bog at their Embra shops.

Prolly got there 10 minutes after opening and some Senga had been there and chored them all .

theyoungvisiter · 28/03/2009 21:57

just to be fair to Expat:

"By EnterStageLeft on Sat 28-Mar-09 21:49:29
I suppose it's the difference between those who think the world owes them a living and those who don't."

Enter - I think that's a bit harsh.

"By ScottishMummy on Sat 28-Mar-09 21:39:33
your baby your responsibility to have enough nappies.not the shop"

Scottish - I think that's a bit harsh.

[self-appointed thought police-woman whacks truncheon in hand]

FAQinglovely · 28/03/2009 21:58

LOL @ your 21.53 post expat
