Cant help it
The thought that there are intelligent, funny, non-sleazy men out there who have masses in common with me....

It just gives me hope

And he's a regular poster on MN too.

OP posts:

It is embarressing to the rest of us that a thread like this even exists. Some of the posts are truly shocking

Rhubarb · 29/03/2009 12:15

Can you all stop saying that please? I don't want to be accused of being a "celebrity" Mumsnetter!

ABetaDad · 29/03/2009 12:21

Rhubarb - both posts were excellent.

I do hope you are also twirling your hair and going all giggly right now as well - apparently loads of you are doing that whenever us men wander in.

Rhubarb · 29/03/2009 12:24

He spoke to me!

QuintessentialShadow · 29/03/2009 12:25

Very well said Rhubarb!

I think most women on this thread and this forum are smart enough to knw the difference between a man looking for the same advice as the rest of us and a creep.Anything else just underestimates the women

kulapunka · 29/03/2009 12:39

funny how you can know exactly what random people are up to on the internet noddyholder, some women don't even know what their dh is up to in RL....just look on relationships.

noddyholder · 29/03/2009 12:42
Hmm
nannynick · 29/03/2009 12:48

I suppose it's similar to how some parents won't consider having a male nanny... they think it is a bit odd that a man would be good at working with children.

I've been an 'outsider' for about 20 years now, so it doesn't really bother me as much now, as it did back then. Though it still gets on my tits that some women find it acceptable for a women to be doing what would have traditionally been a man's job (banker, stockbroker, lawyer, doctor to name just a few professions) but don't feel it appropriate for a man to be doing what was once traditionally women's work. Rant... Rant... Rant...

Forums in my occupation are heavily female dominated. It is why I came across Mumsnet - it had a section for childcarers.

Some of us men on here have a lot more experience caring for children than some of the women on here... so we are in a position to give our view about child related things. We also learn from you. It's all give and take... share and share a like. Should a posters gender make a difference?

Having a secret crush on another poster is fine in my view, as long as it does not get to a point where such a crush destroys your marriage.

kulapunka · 29/03/2009 13:10

nannynick; don't think it's anything to do with a mans ability to look after children...some parents just wouldn't want to leave their dc with a male c/m or nanny...end of.

i think there should deffo be more men in primary school teaching though..( we don't have any at my ds school)...

anyway, good luck with the job...and good on you for taking on a very "female" job.

Gunnerbean · 29/03/2009 14:05

DaftPunk I appear to have missed your point too. (Insert confused emoticon).

Whatever it was, I think you have sidestepped the one that is actually under discussion here rather nicely.

UnquietDad · 29/03/2009 14:34

To people who find this thread offensive, I just want to reiterate that I started out being the subject of it and I've not been offended by it. I declined a request to have it removed. It was initially light-hearted. If it also provokes an interesting discussion about men's roles in their children's lives, all the better.

nannynick · 29/03/2009 15:21

UQD - "Men's Roles In Their Children's Lives" sounds like a good title for a book... could be your next project?

georgimama · 29/03/2009 16:21

kulapunka, if you are daftpunk, "siding with the male posters" has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with the fact that people don't agree with you.

Threadworm · 29/03/2009 16:44

I certainly don't think that men who post here are 'odd' or that they have to justify themselves in any way. The discussions here are very interesting and often funny. That is reason enough for anyone who wants to post.

And of course insofar as it is strictly a parenting site it is for anyone, male or femal, who wants to receive or offer parenting or childcare support.

But I can't get away from the fact that I immensely value a women's forum, where posters are predominantly female and where the tone is female. Perhaps it is because I am old -- mid-forties. Old enough to remember how marginalised women's voices were, and to find it extraordinary that there is such a wonderful place where women are the norm and men the exception.

Most of the time I don't use this as a parenting site. I use it as a place where I can talk to women.

daftpunk · 29/03/2009 16:52

hi georgimama...yep kulapunka was me

have you seen some of the posts on here?...one male poster was encouraging other people to search my posts...don't you find that weird?...did anyone say anything to him....no, nobody.

fair enough, you value the male point of view on here, personally i don't.

it would be nice if women had a place they could go and chat on, without some bloke turning up telling them how to breast feed.

UnquietDad · 29/03/2009 17:04

nannynick - already been there, done that!

UnquietDad · 29/03/2009 17:05

I have to say I generally steer clear of the breastfeeding discussions.

daftpunk · 29/03/2009 17:08

tbh unquietdad..i'd never heard of you till this thread was started..

RustyBunny · 29/03/2009 17:09

UQD - is it still in print?

UnquietDad · 29/03/2009 17:15

rusty - yup, although only in odd shops...

And the feeling is mutual, daftpunk....

noddyholder · 29/03/2009 17:19

I for one would prefer men with at least some similar views and beliefs than women who are still in the dark ages.is it just me?

lou33 · 29/03/2009 17:20

not just you noddy

RustyBunny · 29/03/2009 17:21

Is that odd shops as in 'here and there' or as in 'they have to be a bit strange to stock it.....?'
