Banner across the top of the cover:

"A nation mourns the loss of its brightest star"

How dare they speak on my behalf?

I'm not mourning and she was certainly not our brightest star!

Who writes this drivel? And who believes it?

I'm more sad about Natasha Richardson, I don't cry that easily but dp and I were upset and teary eyed.

KingRolo · 26/03/2009 14:41

"A nation appreciates that it is sad for a 27 year old to die of cancer but can't summon up much grief for an ex-reality TV contestant they have never met" would be more fitting, if less catchy.

Fimbo · 26/03/2009 14:42

My dd keeps seeing her picture and asking who she is. Don't quite know how to answer that one....

ForeverOptimistic · 26/03/2009 14:45

She wasn't thick SGB. She may not have been academically clever but I expect she earned more money than 95% of us on here, she knew how to play the media and had good business acumen. Even when she was playing the "thick" act she was buying property and opening up beauty salons as something to fall back on, that does not strike me as the actions of someone who is "thick".

Blarbie · 26/03/2009 14:46

Unreasonable or argumentative? The people who buy it believe it. You're not them so it's not intended for you. You're not really offended are you?

Rhubarb · 26/03/2009 14:47

FO, sorry but she had a team of people making those decisions for her, pulling strings etc. She would have had an accountant, a publicist, a financial advisor the lot. It's easy to make the most of your millions when you've a team telling you what to do.

donnie · 26/03/2009 14:50

of course she was thick FO - she just had a lot of less thick people working for her.

Anyway, I see this thing hasn't kicked off yet. But it will.....

ForeverOptimistic · 26/03/2009 14:53

Obviously it is easier when you have advisers but she would have been responsible for a lot of the decisions. If she was that stupid she would have pissed the money up the wall. I'm not saying that she was ever going to compete with Carol Vorderman for the "Brain of Britain" award her performance on Celebrity Big Brother demonstrated her weaknessess but she was not as stupid as people would like to believe. It was an act, the media liked it and she played up to it.

I remember reading that she was a dental nurse before BB, I am sure she wouldn't have got the job if she was a total thicko.

ForeverOptimistic · 26/03/2009 14:56

Why do you think that donnie?

What constitutes a thick person in your opinion donnie? Not trying to start a row, I'm genuinely interested.

Watching the Apprentice last night there were a lot of contestants who came across as being a bit thick and yet have more qualifications than Alan Sugar, he left school at 16 with none.

Rhubarb · 26/03/2009 14:58

Whether she was thick or not, what kind of role model was she?

She taught kids that you can be famous without having any talent whatsoever.

That you can be a bully and make racist remarks and it's ok so long as you pretend to be sorry.

That being thick is ok, so long as you are gobby with it.

That you can live our your last days without any kind of dignity.

She was compared to Princess Diana ffs! As much as Princess Di offended me, at least she used her public image to raise the profile of Aids victims, landmine victims and many other good causes. You can say that Jade has encouraged women to get smear tests - no she hasn't. Her story has, but she herself hardly ran a huge campaign about it did she?

Blarbie · 26/03/2009 15:02

Intelligence is irrelevant. The poor girl is dead.
As I hope your mothers would tell you:
If you've nothing good to say don't say anything.
It is wrong to speak ill of the dead.

solidgoldbrass · 26/03/2009 15:09

There you go Biwi, have kicked your thread off for you
Quick chorus of 'DIng Dong the Witch is Dead', anyone?

purepurple · 26/03/2009 15:10

actually intelligence is relevant

if she had a bit more, maybe she would still be alive now?

BecauseImWorthIt · 26/03/2009 15:14

SGB

Blarbie - yes, I was offended actually. How dare OK Magazine presume that I, as part of the nation, is mourning?

I was also offended by the drivel and inanity of the whole thing - regardless of what I might think about Jade.

FFS, it was even on the front page of The Guardian! What is the world coming to?!

Feel free to be offended by any of the drivel printed in these silly magazines. Or just don't buy them! They all assume things about their readership based on generalities. You either buy into the drivel and think how they want you to think or you don't. To be offended by it is more a waste of energy than anything else.

BecauseImWorthIt · 26/03/2009 15:23

I didn't buy it - at the checkout at Sainsbury's today and advertised on TV as well.

I don't go anywhere near any of them.

Still made me cross!

Oh come on PurePurple. Nobody is perfect there are very few people that do everything by the book. How many of us on mumsnet have a daily glass of wine, smoke, don't eat our 5 portions of fruit & veg, have ever had unprotected sex etc etc? Sometimes even the most intelligent of people choose to stick their figures in their ears and ignore the advice.

Jade's actions in ignoring the letters for a follow-up appointment were stupid but it doesn't mean that she died because she was "thick". I can remember an Oxbridge graduate accidentally killing herself when she drowned after drinking too much to celebrate her graduation. Her actions were clearly stupid but she probably had 'A' grades coming out of her ears!

tessofthedurbervilles · 27/03/2009 11:41

Thought it was sad, a young woman with two small kids, but I was outraged at the 'a nation mourns' thing.
I would be as sad if I heard about anyone loaing their life at such a young age..and I am not currently in mourning.

lucykate · 27/03/2009 11:51

ok, maybe thick is the wrong term, but jade did come across as being unable to see the future consequences from her choices and actions.

whispywhisp · 27/03/2009 11:51

I actually quite liked Jade Goody. She was funny and a very likeable girl BUT she is not the only one who has died of cancer - she is one of 1000s who have died or are terminally ill with it. She will not be the last to die of cervical cancer either which is a great shame.

However....I can see why she kept her illness in the public eye - to ensure her boys had some money in the bank. One of the biggest reasons her and Jack married to escape paying inheritance tax - a huge amount of money that would've otherwise gone to the state.

What I do disagree with is that we are being told that due to Jade we are all supposedly more aware of cervical screening and that through her dreadful illness and very sad death we should all ensure we go for regular smear tests. I agree we should and I, for one, have just booked mine - a year late. However....had she followed the same advice and acted upon the letters she'd received rather than ignore them she may still be here today. All that doesn't make sense to me. Yes her death has made us all aware of the dangers of cervical cancer but she died due to her own stupidity. Sorry...bit harsh, but the truth.

And, on another note...her beautiful wedding dress should be auctioned and the money donated to the wonderful Macmillan Nurses that work tirelessly to help make all cancer sufferers last few days as peaceful as possible not buried with her.

whispywhisp · 27/03/2009 11:53

And as for Jack Tweed...give it time. Obviously I don't know the guy but I'm sure he'll get himself into trouble pretty soon and will be in the papers/glossy mags with another lady on his arm in between spending time locked away.

whispywhisp · 27/03/2009 11:54

After all....who goes out and enjoys a Chinese meal with your mates just a few hours after your wife has died?!

2shoes · 27/03/2009 11:54

well fingers crossed he will be in prison soon
