not to offer to pay the man who took my cat to be neutered without discussing it with me

basically my cat came home last night neutered.
We had no idea what had happened or who had taken him.
I called 11 vets in the area until I found the one where it was done.
A neighbor has been feeding our cat and took him to be done. My cat broke through this guys catflap to come home to us where he feels safe. He wasn't missing. We saw him Monday night and he came home tuesday night.

Most of the cats running around the neighborhood have no collar but I would never take them to the vet unless they were hurt!
he said my cat has been coming around for a few months. He never once tried to find out who he belonged to.
We had taken off his collar because it kept getting tighter and tighter on his neck and getting caught on the fences.
But he was very obviously well taken care of, groomed and happy.
We were waiting a few more months to neuter him and would have taken him to the clinic that does it for free.
This guy paid £280.
I don't think I should have to pay for this.

is he asking you to pay for it?

Disenchanted3 · 25/03/2009 20:15

has he asked you to pay for it?

Nabster · 25/03/2009 20:15

£280 for neuturing??

I would ring the vet and ask how much he charges....

Thunderduck · 25/03/2009 20:16

It costs nowhere near £280 for a cat to be neutered.

powpow · 25/03/2009 20:16

no.
I am wondering if it is unreasonable for me not to offer to pay for it.

he's pulling a fast one on you.

GrubbyMare · 25/03/2009 20:17

Er, it costs downwards of £40 to have a male cat neutered, this guy is on the scam.

AMumInScotland · 25/03/2009 20:17

If he chose to get it done, that's his decision and his cost. I wouldn't offer him any money, in fact I'd give him a right earfull about taking liberties with someone else's pet.

mrspnut · 25/03/2009 20:17

I had my cat spayed a few weeks ago and it cost me £45, there is no way it cost £280 just for neutering.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 25/03/2009 20:17

£280?

YANBU. Although if he is over about six months you really should have been looking to do it yourselves sooner rather than later.

differentID · 25/03/2009 20:18

not at all. He stole your cat and put him up for an operation which he should be liable to pay for.

powpow · 25/03/2009 20:18

cat had an undescended testicle apparently (I'm not sure I believe this because my cat has some LARGE balls!)
so they went into his stomach (another reason I freaked out when I saw him, I didn't know what had happened!)
and that costs more.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 25/03/2009 20:18

He = cat not neighbour. However....

beanieb · 25/03/2009 20:18

Of course you shouldn't pay. Is he trying to claim the cat? I mean if he was prepared to pay for it to be done then surely he must consider the cat is his. That or he's a bit odd.

PinkBubblesGoApe · 25/03/2009 20:18

YANBU. How rude of him to do that without permission!

Hassled · 25/03/2009 20:18

If he hasn't asked, definately don't offer. He didn't ask you re the neutering. And £280 is taking the piss - ring the vets back tomorrow and confirm the charge.

sagacious · 25/03/2009 20:19

Our vets charge £40 irrc

Hes pulling a fast one

differentID · 25/03/2009 20:19

Actually ring up the vets and have a blinder of a row- for them to neuter your cat without checking whom he belonged to is a massive issue.

DaisyMooSteiner · 25/03/2009 20:20

And get your cat to take out a restraining order in case he tries anything else like that again.

powpow · 25/03/2009 20:20

I have confirmed the charge with the vet.
But I think they were freaked out to get the call from me and started going on about cancer from undescended testicles etc..... I was very upset as you can imagine.

"My cat broke through this guys catflap to come home to us where he feels safe."

How do you know that?

littleducks · 25/03/2009 20:20

you should put a collar on your cat

you dont need to offer to pay

powpow · 25/03/2009 20:21

wannabe - because the man told me.

OP posts:
differentID · 25/03/2009 20:21

don't offer to pay and tell him if he's that concerned about getting the money back- you'll see him in small claims court.

spicemonster · 25/03/2009 20:22

Sorry, your neighbour took it upon himself to get the cat neutered and has now presented you with a bill? Or are you just assuming he is going to ask you to pay? Who told you it cost £280 - the neighbour or the vet?

This is all very confusing
