i agree i'm banning it

Beachcomber · 13/03/2009 08:17

YANBU.

Jack Dee was very droll though.

Saltire · 13/03/2009 08:18

Well I do for some of them, (Ricky gervais springs to mind)but I think the likes of Lenny Hnery, Dawn french etc who have been there from the very start (I'm old enough to remember the first one with lenny and Griff Rhys Jones) are very passionate about it, and aren't self promoting

Saltire · 13/03/2009 08:19

Although I can't comment on Comic relief Apprentic as I didn't watch it, so if the thread is Just about that then sorry, ignore what I said

BitOfFun · 13/03/2009 08:33

I think it's the only chance some of them get to still be on telly, Saltire, and to score a few more points for National Treasure status and a title in their dotage [cynical]

Starbear · 13/03/2009 08:37

But I would go to Kilimanjaro with the BBC it must be an opportunity of a life time with all the medics, porters. They will airlift you out if you got into aggro. So they are all a bit smug. I didn't watch it all because it wasn't really a true adventure just a group of very well looked after tourists. Not really doing it for charity are they

Bucharest · 13/03/2009 08:43

YknowYABU.
Yes, they are getting coverage. They could also have chosen to have OK round for the weekend to photograph their lavvie or something instead, and been paid for it.

reality - I thought I saw Jason Donovan too but I think it was actually Ronan Keating. they do look quite similar.

VinegarTitsCoveredinChocolate · 13/03/2009 08:50

The Kilimajaro programme forced me to make a donation, purely for the fact that it showed you children dying from malaria, they didnt need to be celebs on it for me to do that

OnlyWantsOne · 13/03/2009 08:52

YABU re The Big Red Nose Day Climb - when was the last time you climbed a mountain and raised over a million pounds and highlighted problems in Africa such as malaria.

The people that did the big red nose day climb, are people young enough to identify with a huge chunk of the population of this country that haven't got a damn clue about the problems in Africa. They've done an amazing job.

VinegarTitsCoveredinChocolate · 13/03/2009 08:57

To be honest i think those that did the climb are not celebs who are trying to raise their profile, they are already high profile celebs iykwim, now if some nobody celeb who we hadnt seen for years did this i would think they were just in it for the fame and reconition

Climbing Kilimajaro is no easy feat and yes they had a good support team around them but it still must have been bloody hard, i dont think i could do it, even for charity, i would find an easier was to raise money, but i am a lazy fecker

sixlostmonkeys · 13/03/2009 09:06

Comedians, presenters etc etc are working people trying to make a living just like everyone else. It would be madness if they turned down an opportunity to 'self promote' or however you want to word it.
Whilst they are 'self promoting' they are entertaining the public and at the end of it all have helped raise the money.
What is wrong with that?
YABVU

edam · 13/03/2009 09:15

YANBU to say it's a golden opportunity for celebs to promote themselves and have some fun (although there must be easier ways of doing it than climbing mountains).

But... Comic Relief does raise an awful lot of money for some heart-breaking causes. How many people in this country would donate to the wome who were raped but survived during the genocide in Rwanda if it weren't for CR?

edam · 13/03/2009 09:16

(I'd rather have a pop at tax-dodger Bono who has the cheek to go on about tackling poverty, tbh. That's a striking example of hypocrisy for you.)

georgimama · 13/03/2009 09:18

YANBU.

It's like when there was that ridiculous concert for Climate Change, so Madonna et al all flew half way round the world to hold concerts across the globe. That'll help keep carbon emissions down won't it?

They could all just write a cheque if they care that much. Definitely an attempt to up their "National Treasure" ranking as BoF says.

georgimama · 13/03/2009 09:21

Oh Bono, don't mention that arse to me. Viz had a top tip about him: " Multi millionaire Bono, why not completely take the piss by telling ordinary people to give money to charity whilst you sue your wardrobe assistantfor thousands of pounds over a "stolen" hat?"

poopscoop · 13/03/2009 09:22

what does it matter, if it raises money for good causes, I don't care whether they are arseholes trying to promote themselves.

liahgen · 13/03/2009 09:22

Ronan Keating does huge amounts for charity, he has a trust set up in memory of his mother. He's walked miles and he always does the marathon.

And for what it's worth, I thought the apprentice was hilarious. Yes they are as described slebs, but made good viewing. Jack Dee complimenting Sir Alan on his dress sense and wondering aloud if whoever set up the room could count as there weren't enough chairs or water glasses. Brilliant.

MarshaBrady · 13/03/2009 09:24

They were trying so hard to be charming it was cringeworthy.

Alan Sugar clearly couldn't be bothered with their smarm either, and Patsy got far too wound up.

Lemontart · 13/03/2009 09:34

DH and I were split over the kilimanjaro thing. I thought it was a terrific effort and blubbed through the reports from africa. The bit about every 30 seconds a baby dying from malaria has haunted me since.

The text a fiver idea sounded pretty good to me and I hope they raised enough to make a real difference. While I am sure many of them initially jumped at the opportunity for personal reasons (understandable - sounds incredible trip of a lifetime, get lots of tv exposure for your career and a little flattered to be considered), I am sure that at least some of them found the strength to go through with it and get to the top thanks to their experiences in Africa.

MrsBoo · 13/03/2009 09:39

I read it took a team of 150 people for the mountain climb. I would love the chance and opportunity to take part in something like that - really makes me sick the way the celebs have taken over Comic Relief.
It was better in the early days (showing my age!)

VinegarTitsCoveredinChocolate · 13/03/2009 09:42

You cant compare the climate concert to comic relief, its nothing like the same thing

Comic relief raises millions each year, if it were not for the peple, not just celebs, that get involved it wouldnt raise half as much or get half as much publicity, so what if some celebs do it to raise their profile, its still helping to raise money innit?

Pheebe · 13/03/2009 09:44

Yes, lets cancel comic relief because god forbid anyone should get off their arse and actually do something!

You seem to be forgetting that being on tele is what they DO, its their job. And quite frankly who would give a stuff about Joe Bloggs from down the road climbing anything. The 'celebrity' and peoples fascination with them, is what brings in the money, its what makes people turn on the tele and its what makes people dip their hands in their pocket.

How much did YOU do for charity last year?

traceybath · 13/03/2009 09:45

I loved the kilimanjaro documentary and it made me cry.

Think they did something really hard and had to do lots of preparation/training for it so i think they've done a fab thing personally.

They've raised over £1.5million so far through the climb which is a lot of malaria nets.

Also whose to say they haven't also written cheques but they're hardly going to announce that are they?

So yabu.
