Sweet cigarettes......

My MIL has just bought some for my dcs (7,5 and 2.5). We don't get on anyway and so my judgement is sometimes clouded by how I feel about her.
I really don't want my children to eat them and can imagine them pretending to 'smoke'....makes my skin crawl.
FIL has now told my DCs what tey were called in his day, made so much worse.....
Do I stick to my guns and say no?

I am pro sweets (sounds silly I know) as I was deprived, of sweets, as a child and had a fascination with sweets and chocolate my whole life!!!!

Hilarious.Amazed they are still on sale!

Salleroo · 07/03/2009 18:10

I used to love sweet cigarettes and pretended to smoke them and feel really grown up. I never ended up smoking, it's a filthy dirty habit whereas sweet cigarettes have a special sweety taste to them!

PS Pick your battles with the inlaws. Sweet cigarettes are nothing, save it for when she really pees you off.

Divineintervention · 07/03/2009 18:11

I used to have the chocolate ones with the wrapper on in a soft pack like pack!!

Wow - I havent seen any of them for years. I used to love them, and have never had even a puff of a cigarette, so would be pretty relaxed with them I think. But yes. It would feel odd.

What were they called in FIL's day?

PlumBumMum · 07/03/2009 18:13

didn't think they existed anymore

screamingabdab · 07/03/2009 18:13

We had them as children ...I loved the chocolate one with the wrappers, but I would never buy them for my kids.

It could be seen as a little provocative on her part, given the history you imply (there are lots of other sweets to choose from after all), but I'd just let it go, don't rise to it in case she's trying to wind you up.

Theresa · 07/03/2009 18:14

I remember liking the chocolate ones with the wrapper but not the white ones. I think my ds has had these in a party bag and I'm sure they were called candy sticks, definitely not sweet cigs?
I agree about picking your battles with MIL, I get on really well with mine and the only time we ever fell out was because I thought she gave my dc's too much chocolate and that was about 7 years ago!

Divineintervention · 07/03/2009 18:16

Sweet cigarettes, not candy sticks!!!!!

I'd be annoyed if someone bought them for teh dds too. Yeah, say you don't want them to have them.

screamingabdab · 07/03/2009 18:17

I also remember that red sort of shredded coconut stuff that was meant to be like pipe tobacco?

It reminded me of my graddad's old holborn tobacco, so I loved it.... but smoking killed him, so I was never tempted to smoke for real.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 07/03/2009 18:20

Divine - i remember those! I loved them! like this although I'm sure you could get marlboro or some similar word.

hercules1 · 07/03/2009 18:27

wotulookinat · 07/03/2009 18:28

they don't put the red tip on anymore - love the taste of them

dilemma01 · 07/03/2009 18:41

They still sell them in the shop near me, in a red and white packet very similiar to morlboro, and they do look like cigarette, rolled up ones, they also sell candy sticks so they are not the same thing.

dilemma01 · 07/03/2009 18:42

very similair to this

Ronaldinhio · 07/03/2009 18:42

mmm all the talk of sweet candy sticks has put me in mind of a cigarette

excuse me whilst I go and partake

dilemma01 · 07/03/2009 18:44

lol, love the warning signs

piratecat · 07/03/2009 18:45

i'll join you ron!!

mrsmaidamess · 07/03/2009 18:46

They're the sweets they used to sell next to the liquorice crack pipes, aren't they?

MumGoneCrazy · 07/03/2009 18:50

In the shop near us they still sell these chocolate cigs but they also sell chocolate crayons which i buy instead as i dont want them pretend smoking

Thankfully they realise they cant actually eat real crayons although it didnt take DD2 (2yrs) trying one and spiting it out before she realised
