I HATE world book day.............

makes for children expecting miracles, and mums feeling inadiquate, and costumes looking nothing like they should, and children not winning prizes, and books being thrown for building hopes up...............

I suspect my ds is going to win the prize for the boy who has obviously had no help whatsoever from his parents.

At least he's not being a princess this year. Phew!

Spidermama · 04/03/2009 21:45

Pyjamas!! Good idea. He could be Wendy's brother from Peter Pan. Carry a Teddy. Wear PJs. What are the brothers called, can anyone remember?

tigerdriver · 04/03/2009 21:46

Well done Reality. DS has knight pyjamas and a crown left over from the nativity play, so he is able to sleep in his costume and just put the crown on and can be a "handsome prince". Good to go.

SerendipitousHarlot · 04/03/2009 21:46

I bought one off t'internet

I am so shit at domestic, creative type things, I just couldn't even think about it.

apostrophe, go and get a load of twigs and leaves from outside, stick em in his hair in the morning and he can be Stig of the Dump

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 21:47

spidermama, if my boy went as a princess, I would seriously be thrilled as I do have that exact costume

instead, he wanted james bond, but didn;t want to do suit and tie

he is now gonna be a cowboy, as that is what I have for him!!!

My DS (7) hates dressing up, it makes him feel uncomfortable, and is opting out of book day tomorrow - teacher says it's fine - I love him that little bit more for it!! He can just go in non-uniform. Phew

Spidermama · 04/03/2009 21:50

Micheal. Great! Thanks Psycho. I don't s'pose you know if he's the one with the teddy bear and top hat do you?

Megglevache · 04/03/2009 21:50

God I was so excited I nearly wet myself. I am so proud that I will post my ds's pic in a moment

Can I mention something book day related?

Our lovely school gave out the vouchers on Monday (thanks vv nice) but then always plan a book fair to give us the 'opportunity' to buy books after the conveniently planned parents evening.

Fair enough.....but what I really object to is the class by class tour of the book sale during the school day so I have 3 whingy children moaning and crying because I don't want to buy a Little Princess makeover-rainy day activity-Star Wars-sticker-best friends cheque book kind of tat!!!!!!!!!!

At the school I work at it's not just the kids who have to dress up.......!!!!!!!!!!!!

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 21:56

maple, my elder two gave me book vouchers to use for myself.

lots better than the book fair

and more fun too!!!

((I will use them on teen books tho, makes me feel better, but also, I actually like some of the teen books out at the mo.....))

tis the little ones who are evil, as are their schools and their 'book fairs'........am right there with you on THAT rant!

ummm, can anyone check my ds and make sure that I'm not sending him to school for a beating and months of riducule.

Spidermama · 04/03/2009 21:56

Awww Megglevache good for you.
I feel like a right old moaner now.

This is the pattern for me. Stressed and agitated on the school run, everyone talking all at once, someone thrusts a note into my hand about World Book Day and the seed or irritation is planted. I feel more of my life blood draining. As the day approaches the background stress increases.
When the day comes, and we've sorted an outifit, it's such fun, and everyone has made such a great effort, I feel a moment of joy. This is quickly replaced by the guilt at a) remembering my initial tension b) not having made the effort other people have made.

I will try harder for comic releif day to break this toxic pattern.

RustyBear · 04/03/2009 21:58

At the school where I work the pyjamas are for Red Nose day, not World Book Day.
There was a suggestion that the teachers & other staff should also wear pyjamas. This did not go down well & a compromise has been reached whereby the children will wear pyjamas & the teachers will wear dressing gowns & slippers, over normal clothes if they want.

We are ignoring the dressing up aspect of World Book Day this year, having an uneasy feeling that it might not go down too well with the parents having two dressing up days in just over a week

Jux · 04/03/2009 21:59

I am horrified that dd has to go to school in pyjamas tomorrow; what on earth has that got to do with world book day? How does that encourage book reading?

A few years ago the kid who won the prize was wearing a costume of a character from a FILM which had never been a book. I was disgusted.

Megglevache, your ds look absolutely brilliant.

Megglevache · 04/03/2009 22:00

Spider give yourself a break, you have about 20 children at school I only have one and by next year I'll be sending him to school in a bin liner and telling him to act like a Mr Man.

Megglevache · 04/03/2009 22:01

Thanks Jux, dh just rolled his eyes and said "he's going to get his head kicked in " which set me off!
