I HATE world book day.............

makes for children expecting miracles, and mums feeling inadiquate, and costumes looking nothing like they should, and children not winning prizes, and books being thrown for building hopes up...............

argh just remembered(well, this thread reminded me) Ideas for treasure island please!!.....for a 9 year old girl-she was a pirate the other week, can't remember what for, shall i just put her in that again?

cheesesarnie · 04/03/2009 22:40

right have painted one side of wings.need to wait for them to dry argh.why did dh chose this week to go away!!

swanriver · 04/03/2009 22:45

the trick is to find characters that just wear normal clothes...like George in Famous Five (albeit fifties normal clothes). Naswm she is a girl with a dog called Timmy.

mommycat · 04/03/2009 22:47

Are they allowed to go as princesses? My DD wanted to go as Giselle but I told her that's only a movie, not a book. So she wants to go as Belle from Beauty and the Beast. She has a huge collection of Woolthworth's fancy dress costumes and stuff from Ebay.

Her school only sent the letter out today! So I wonder how many will be in costumes?

We're new to this, only in nursery. I didn't even know it was a 'contest'.

CharleeInChains · 04/03/2009 22:50

I used to go every year in one of my dad's shirts and some old leggings that i ripped up and rubbed dirt into, then i messed up my hair and i ladies and gentleman.............. was Oliver Twist.

Rachmumoftwo · 04/03/2009 22:51

All disney films are also books, you may not win but your child will still be happy

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 22:57

mummycat, many books have princesses

at theoliver twist idea.

now wishes I had ranted earlier!!

Oh I am glad I found this thread.

I was writing my list of things to do tomorrow. One of which was make a costume for ds (age 3) for world book day the following day. Except it isn't. It's tomorrow.

He loves this book

Would it be too crap just to pin a few pairs of pants onto a tshirt?

Trouble is that he doesn't have Small pants, Big pants, giant frilly pig pants, new pants, blue pants one two three.

He only has Thomas pants, Thomas pants, Thomas pants and Thomas pants Must have been a multi pack!

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 23:17

could always pin your pants and daddys pants too......

mawbroon · 04/03/2009 23:19

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 23:20

OP posts:
mawbroon · 04/03/2009 23:25

So do you think I might get away with it?

Northernlurker · 04/03/2009 23:28

Well my dd2 is going as Aslan - after I reminded her we have a lion costume (well paws, a hat/mask and a tail). Dd1 is going as Paddington - she has a dark blue coat, we've found a red scarf she liked, a dark hat, a jar of marmalade (!) and she has made herself a small suitcase and please look after this bear label.....

If anybody is desperate dd2 was thinking of Matilda - she was going to wear a dress and carry a big pile of books...easy enough!

I LOATHE World sodding book day - even though my kids are big enough to think for themselves it's still stressful!

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 23:30

mawbrron, yes

northern, we have an aslan costume (well, lion one from a lion king dance in one of the shows my DDs did), yet it was deemed 'not cool', down to me loving narnia too much, and so it was not their choice of costume.

damn kids, should be thankful for whatver I do for them.......((in the words of a fifties housewife)

KatyMac · 04/03/2009 23:32

We are supposed to do fairy tales - but with twin mindees that argue over everything they are going as police men as that is the only thing I have 2 of

Northernlurker · 04/03/2009 23:34

I think Aslan was declined here last year actually - that being the year when dd1 decided she wanted to go as the whale from the snail and the whale! I was on maternity leave and obviously had too much time on my hands because we sent her to school in a cardboard sandwich board style whale. Dh was up till midnight making sure the whale had the right winning smile.....

Califrau I think there may be a degree of correlation here - neither of us does it, but we would both like to...

Mawbroon how is the great pants hunt going?

For the excuse-to-weat-a-princess-dress thing, how about Princess Smartypants? (I know she is not wearing a dress on the cover, but she does at some point in the book )

stealthsquiggle · 05/03/2009 00:07

You know what, KatyMac, I cannot think of a single fairy tale which features one policeman, let alone twin policemen.

Nixz · 05/03/2009 00:22

Havent read all the threads... Policeman... go as pc plum from ballamory!
Spare a thought for the teachers... we cant exactly go as Katie Price or jackie Collins!!!
Today we had to go in 1940's dress for History day and tomorrow im in my jimjams....
Great!

overthehill · 05/03/2009 00:23

We've got a WBD costume and a WBD decorated hat competition! Twas a joint effort this evening (ds, me and dh) decorating hat (Professor Branestawm, with lots of bits of inventions, springs, screwdrivers etc attached with wire to straw hat from charity shop) and a boxtroll costume (a shy creature that lives in a box from a book called The Ratbridge Chronicles). I had to seek out the giant cardboard box from an electrical shop in town and bring it home on my bike(!), and since then dh has customised it by cutting head and arm holes, and ds has made lots of signs to stick over it. Tomorrow am he'll have to have big teeth face-painted on and special shoes made... Luckily school is only 100 yards away and no rain is forecast, so at least the box shouldn't get soggy on the way! Must go to bed now as have to be up early to get everything done!

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 07:18

chilly here for the book-inspired children, tis snowing!!!

OP posts:
LurkerOfTheUniverse · 05/03/2009 07:56

I wanted dd to go as The Cat In The Hat, but she's not having it, so Yet Another Disney Princess here

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 08:04

tha cowboy of last night is not convinced he is from a book, (and he isn;t so far from our hunting I must admit), so he is now in a red&white stripy t-shirt and black trousers and is going as Danny from Danny and The Dinosaur

he also has a mahoosive dinosaur teddy on his bed as a prop, so all is happy again here

DD3 is tasha the tap dance fairy. quite apt as it is her nic-name anyway

Northernlurker · 05/03/2009 08:15

Paddington and I have realised she labelled her suitcase 'Brazil'!!! Have had to do another 'Peru' label quick and will be pretending he had also been to Brazil!

Did I mention that I hate world sodding book day??
