I HATE world book day.............

makes for children expecting miracles, and mums feeling inadiquate, and costumes looking nothing like they should, and children not winning prizes, and books being thrown for building hopes up...............

hmm, there is indeed a business opportunity here...

Look, I don't know what you are all bleating about. Over the tea table tonight (my birthday tea to boot), dd2 says they can dress as a person from another country for book day tomorrow.

In teh space of 10 mins, we had come up with a simple costume.

You need to think small to think big

I HATE world book day with a passion

One of mine wanted to go as George from the Famous Five. I ask you? And he is a boy? What is that all about?

mine have to go as characters from a cornish book.

blardy sea gulls.especially as ds2 decided that although he doesnt have to dress up he'd like to be gully too at the last minute.

mooki · 04/03/2009 22:14

I went as zaphod beeblebrox from Hitchhiker's guide when I was at primary school. I used my girl's world doll as my extra head. I would have been 10 or 11 though so as happy enough to make own costume.

naswm · 04/03/2009 22:14

Cornish characters? omg

pointydog · 04/03/2009 22:15

megg has reminded me - we have a pirate outfit, just one home made pirate outfit which has been used for

hallowe'en
book day
scots day

many times over. one good cheap outfit and some black eyeliner is all you need

Megglevache · 04/03/2009 22:15

Aww thank you Cali. I might lose the tache though just in case he gets a roughing up for the year 6 boys who just have bum fluff.

notnowbernard · 04/03/2009 22:16

DD is going as Rapunzel and we made a long plait out of wool and stuck it on a self-made, dd-decorated crown and everything

Then we read the book and realised Rapunzel wasn't actually a Princess

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 22:18

meggle, DS1 went as a pirate last year

we cannot use it tho this year he claims, as they might remember

me thinks not perosnally, but hey, he is 8, and in his world his word is law over mine!!

cheesesarnie · 04/03/2009 22:18

everyone else is going as mowser from the mousehol cat but dd and ds1 decided to be different and go as gully

i currently have 3 beaks drying in kitchen and 1 pair of wings finished plus 2 half done.im waiting for paint to dry.(and i'll admit gradually getting tipsey on drink i found in cupboard but decided was needed and deserved).

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 22:19

pointy, I so wish mine would re-use outfits.

apparently tho, it is not 'cool'...

I have the same for tomorrow. I have black PJs, a black cape and some black card I should be cutting into the shape of a bat-mask.

PJ day is next friday for us - Comic Relief - I have th black PJs.

Fuck it. I'm not proud.

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 22:21

PJ day would make me so happy, I might just have to all day long!

shame my school (well, the childrens school) won;t contemplate it

OP posts:
Megglevache · 04/03/2009 22:21

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY DON'T REUSE OLD OUTFITS?

pointydog · 04/03/2009 22:22

re growth. It is a pain that children grow but the trick is to use over-sized things for the outfit.

so teh pirate is one of my white blouses
a pair of black leggings (while I have girls and we always seem to find them kicking about)

everything else, size doesn't matter or is so cheap we can replace year (like cheap pair of stripy tights)

meggles...............tis my girls........their issues with re-using have rubbed offon my boys

no idea what I have done wrong, but clearly I have done something bad!

OP posts:
ABetaDad · 04/03/2009 22:30

Dracula is a good one for boys. Its fairly easy. Just a white shirt, bow tie, black cloak, black trouser and face paint and some fake blood.

A Harry Potter wizard costume work well as a Dracula costume and can be bought from most toy shops in department stores as can face paint and fake blood.

No sewing required. We are lazy parents. We hate World Book Day. I heard it was invented by the book industry to get rid of surplus stock after Christmas.

psychomum5 · 04/03/2009 22:33

dracula no-go here, due to it being the ONE re-used costume for halloween.

harry potter............not one of mine will do that die to me being the harry potter fan, and so they are NOT!
