Background: have to get new car as dc3 on the way and current one not big enough. Current family car in my name and second (much smaller) car in Dh's with corresponding insurances, as dh only been driving a few years.

Went to dealership on Friday, having finally decided what we wanted and dealers were offering 0% interest finance deal. Negotiated price etc with me doing all most of the chat. Comes to take out deal we figure as Dh has job and I'm sahm credit search should be in his name ( all finance joint in the doris household). Comes to the registration docs and because the credit check has been done in Dh's name the car can not be in mine.

This in view of the fact that as soon as we walk away with the reg docs, we can contact the DVLA and register a new owner, but ?devalue the car further by creating a 3rd registered keeper where really there is none!

AIBU to resent the fact that because I gave up my career to look after my children, I now am resigned to feeling like a chattel to dh, (who to be fair is quite happy to transfer ownership after the event)

PS I am normally very happy as a SAHM ( espically as one of my dc's requires more care)

Are you sure you don't resent the fact that you gave up your career?

The credit check was done in your DH's name, because as a family you choose for him to work and you to stay home. Seems a bit pointless to fret over it, unless there are deeper issues here..

Geepers · 21/02/2009 20:16

YABU. It doesn't matter, does it? We bought two brand new cars from the same dealership last year and both are in my husband's name.

It matters not a jot.

DH paid for my car and put it in my name too but maybe finance deals are different?

If everything is joint in your house does it really matter? I wouldn't be bothered who's name our cars are in as they are 'ours' not mine or his.

MaureenMLove · 21/02/2009 20:20

But, its only a car. Does it really matter that much to you? I don't get it tbh.

IotasCat · 21/02/2009 20:20

If you feel that strongly transfer it to your name.

You have to admit that there is a logic to a car dealer giving finance to someone who has a job.

Desiderata · 21/02/2009 20:21

It's an inconsequential thing to get worked up about, in my opinion.

If my dh pays for a holiday with his credit card, the bookings are in his name.

So what?

Why is it so important to you to have a car in your name? Are you craving for status?

nappyaddict · 21/02/2009 20:22

Why would it matter? Many people have houses in just one person's name aswell.

PrincessButtercup · 21/02/2009 20:22

Ours is in Dh's name. Never thought to worry about it (and he gets my parking tickets!).

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:23

Think I felt devalued more than worried about the car tbh, first time in over 2 years at home my "status" has been called into question,.

And no i don't resent giving up work, I would have been in afghanistan or iraq by now for 6 months.... much happier with my girls

YABU - you have a new car and you're still not happy

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:24

ok I'm getting the feeling I may have been a little hormonal

OP posts:
Desiderata · 21/02/2009 20:26

Bless you, Doris

IotasCat · 21/02/2009 20:26

It's not your status though, it's the fact that you don't have an income therefore it is illogical to give you credit.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:27

Have been ( after being very chuffed at sid new car on fri) letting it get under my skin, one to chalk up to experience!

DH is paying the finance on my car, but the registration documents are all in my name.
The dealer didn't have a problem with this.

You can still insure the car in your name to ensure you don't lose any no claims bonuses.

I did this on my two previous cars as they were DH's cast offs.

The insurance company were fine as we are married, not sure if its the same for non married couples.

IotasCat · 21/02/2009 20:28

My car is in my name but it is partly financed by a loan taken out by my dh as I was a sahm at the time. However to the dealer it was paid in full so he was happy to put it in my name.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:29

sid the sedona has an interesting ring???

( yes all the cars have names too)

OP posts:
DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:30

annmar was your finance through the dealer to or from another source???

Now iknow IABU (but it's still niggling)

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 21/02/2009 20:30

It is a bit strange that dealers have different policies on this though. I wonder why.

ChippingIn · 21/02/2009 20:35

AIBU to resent the fact that because I gave up my career to look after my children, I now am resigned to feeling like a chattel to dh

Nope, you're not.

annmar · 21/02/2009 20:36

The finance is through the dealers.

We got the car in October last year.

Its a 0% finance deal.

They never questioned that DH was paying, but it was my car.

I would think its quite common for other people to pay for a car (through finance or cash). Think of all those 17 & 18 year olds who get a car for their birthday.

I can understand how you feel. I was very pleased to be the proud owner of a car once more after four years of driving cars DH no longer wanted.

kellykateneedsaholiday · 21/02/2009 20:37

When we bought our car the credit search etc was in dhs name as he earns more than me. We told them we wanted registration document in my name but trainee salesman cocked it up so when registration document came throught with dhs name on it I sent it back and they changed it to my name. It didnt add an extra keeper.
No reason for it being in my name except that the previous 3 cars we have had in his name have been a nightmare but the ones in my name have always been ok. think im luckier than him

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:46

thanks for the replies IABU but.... I think I'm still going to push the dealer to see if they'll back down... if he doesn't then I'll leave it at that (possibly)

OP posts:
DorisIsAPinkDragon · 21/02/2009 20:47

Kely did you sed it back to DVLA or dealers??
