i will not post this

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2009 12:26

i didn't say lowering, i said altering. i think mn is in general more aggressive, and i think that is partly to do with the gang threads and AIBU.

RiaParkinson · 15/02/2009 12:58

Tsar it's much more brash
People are more agressive

RiaParkinson · 15/02/2009 12:58

aggressive

TrillianAstra · 15/02/2009 13:05

Hecate what do you think of people who say 'I know this belongs in parenting but I need a quick answer so I posted it in chat'?

I like AIBU. I'd prefer it if it wasn't taken as an invitation to fight, but I like that it exists, and I enjoy reading the threads.

ThreadieMair · 15/02/2009 13:08

Are those 'friends threads' generally aggressive and ganglike, Aitch? I know that you were badly treated on one of them (don't know the details though) but I assumed that most of them were completely harmless and bland. Is that wrong?

TrillianAstra · 15/02/2009 13:10

I thought all the gang threads were just boooooooooring to anyone who's not in the gang.

DumbledoresGirl · 15/02/2009 13:11

I'm with SEA, as usual.

I have often complained that AIBU has lowered the tone here.

DumbledoresGirl · 15/02/2009 13:14

Oops just read latter posts and realised the use of the phrase "lowering the tone" is controversial. Well tough, I'll be controversial: it has lowered the tone.

Lulumama · 15/02/2009 13:15

aitch, i am really surprised you are lumping in the teashop and barrr as aggresive and nasty threads

that saddens me

everyone is welcome to post on them, no-one is ignored

it is open to every single poster on MN

just because you don;t want to post on it, does not mean it is nasty/aggresive/ lowering the tone

there are certain topics where posters might feel more comfortable, and lots of posters do like a bit of inane chit chat from time to time. hence tea shop and barrr, with no agenda, no 'yer names not daaaahn, yer not coming in...' attitude

DumbledoresGirl · 15/02/2009 13:20

I agree with you Lulumama, that the teashop and bar and even the 10/10 threads seem very friendly. But, I tried to get into the 10/10 thread at NY and they were very friendly to me but I still felt I was gatecrashing a private gathering so I left them to it. I expect the teashop and bar are the same. Perhaps, to post on those threads, it is necessary to be the sort of person who can join in an established group of friends in RL without fretting about being accepted?

As for the threads for named people only, I can only say one thing: msn!

PussyNoMore · 15/02/2009 13:23

Who's Puss? Hope it's not me

fattiemumma · 15/02/2009 13:24

the thing with AIBU is that half the time AIBU isn't really what the poster wants to say at all. its more a case of, i know this is wrong/right but i just want to hear what others think too.

but instead of actually reading what teh poster is asking they just get a 100 posts of YAB/NBU.

with no actual assistnace or commenton the subject at hand

IrritatingPetName · 15/02/2009 13:28

AIBU is like the urge to pick a scab.

I get bemused by the truly inane ones - AIBU to lock my car? I mean WTF?

Also, if you are doing, ahem, 'homework' on a poster AIBU is the first batch of threads alphabetically and so you often get the mistaken impression that said poster is some kind of rant-tastic spleen-machine. Not always right...

TrillianAstra · 15/02/2009 13:34

LOL at rant-tastic spleen-machine.

Ledodgy · 15/02/2009 13:47

have you seen this?

RustyBear · 15/02/2009 13:52

the 10/10 people have always been very nice to me when I've ventured to actually say something instead of lurking, even though most of them probably don't know me from Adam. And I'm very grateful to them, as they inspired me to start eating chicken & fruit for lunch instead of toasted sandwiches & I've lost over 20lbs.

As for the bar & teashop, their clientele is always changing- most of the people there a lot now are different from when I was a regular. Although I'd been around a few months when lulu started her bar, it was those evenings with lulu, lissie, Lully and Shoshe that reallly confirmed my addiction made me feel at home here.

Maybe AIBU needs splitting up into Mumsnet Jury (for when you really want an opinion) and Ranter's Soapbox for when you just want to vent.

(I'm assuming each soapbox has only room for one person btw, which is why I didn't call it Ranters' Soapbox)

fattiemumma · 15/02/2009 13:58

@Rustybear pre empting the pedants

enraha · 15/02/2009 14:01

flippin' eck ledodgy, the Times might be short of advertisers, but that is on the lazy side of journalism, isn't it?

Reminds me of "From the Message Boards" in Private Eye.

RustyBear · 15/02/2009 14:03

Actually, that's probably why I don't start many AIBU threads; because I begin to anticipate the responses in my head & realise how the thread would go....

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 15/02/2009 14:19

Ah that's ok Trillian - they are cross referencing

daftpunk · 15/02/2009 14:34

aibu is the best part of mn!

and as for the "gang" threads...total rubbish,

i wanted to start a new "chat" thread (i talk too much on the song thread.. ) i think it was lizzylou?? from the bar asked me to join them, and the invisiblemandidit asked me to join her thread...i thought that was really nice & freindly....i have been on the 10/10 thread, found them all "too" nice tbh..the reason i left was nothing to do with feeling unwelcome....i just don't have the time and don't eat much fruit!

DumbledoresGirl · 15/02/2009 14:41

oh no I didn't mean to imply the 10/10 girls did not make me feel welcome. The exact opposite. But me being me, I found it a bit awkward to be on a thread where most of the posters seemed to have long term relationships with each other and I was the unknown newbie.

daftpunk · 15/02/2009 14:46

DG, oh i know you didn't mean that, i've read some of your posts and you are fab!
(i was answering another poster)

come on the song thread we're all very easy come easy go, and we eat bad food!

DumbledoresGirl · 15/02/2009 14:51

LOL daftpunk, and I wasn't meaning you either! I was responding more to RustyBear's post!

Thanks for the compliment though. Where is the song thread? I have eaten a huge lunch and need to sit quietly for 10 minutes so I am looking for somewhere to post...

daftpunk · 15/02/2009 14:54

....lol

hang on...i'll get it up!

look on active convos in a few minutes
