to hate the word 'chav' being used to refer to anything people don't like or feel is a bit beneath them?

Honestly, it has to be the most over-used word in the English language (if it is even recognised as a word in the English language). It doesn't mean anything and I am getting really bored of it now. Please everyone that uses this word, stop for the sake of my sanity!

Well said, I loathe it too.

random · 13/02/2009 22:01

I hate it too

mosschops30 · 13/02/2009 22:01

no! I use it a lot, especially for the chav-mobile which neighbours son-in-law likes parking at the end of my drive!

Do you live in some rural english haven where they dont have chavs? (or chauvers which is the proper northern name)

random · 13/02/2009 22:02

I live on a council estate .......

PottyCock · 13/02/2009 22:03

quite the opposite

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:04

Nope - love the word. Encompasses everything that is wrong about the society we live in.

Chav chav chav chav chav.

noonki · 13/02/2009 22:06

I hate it and find it incredibly snobby and belittling.

But I hate this class ridden society we live in.

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:08

Nothing to do with class, and everything to do with morals and attitudes.

random · 13/02/2009 22:09

All to do with the I'm so much better then you attitude imo

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:12

Well, when someone is revving the engine of their chavtastic pimped car, throwing their chavvy WKD bottles out of the window and blaring their bass at 3am then yes, I think I'm better than them. In fact, most people are better than them.

noonki · 13/02/2009 22:12

total bollocks Paolosgirl.

Name ONE person who is famous and a chav and ISN'T working class/lower middle?

random · 13/02/2009 22:17

Would you call a middle class youth revving his car and getting pissed a chav???

PussyNoMore · 13/02/2009 22:20

I love the word chav too.

Whats the council estate got to do with it? I know plent of millionaires who are chav's.

random · 13/02/2009 22:24

But bet all the millionaires you know have working class backgrounds

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/02/2009 22:24

I hate it

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:24

Prince Harry is a chav.

ravenAK · 13/02/2009 22:27

To me, it refers more to a certain sort of taste in fashion etc. than being a judgement on behaviour, much less social class.

I generally avoid using it, though, because it can cause offence.

As a term it provoked an interesting debate with my year 10 students recently when discussing the word 'culture' - most definitely feel it has derogatory connotations, none would 'claim' it.

noonki · 13/02/2009 22:28

paolo... I disagree about prince harry but am quite happy to shoot myself in the foot and say his girlfriend (or is it his ex) is one!...

but I still hate the word.

themoon66 · 13/02/2009 22:33

Well I'm with paolosgirl on this. Describe this without using the word 'chav'.

PussyNoMore · 13/02/2009 22:36

I would not be offended to be called a chav, I would find it hilarious. Sometimes I think I'm a chav in denial.

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:37

Now, I'm in the wrong job. I need to start tarmacing driveways to earn the big bucks, evidently

myfunnynametaken · 13/02/2009 22:39

Noonki, the answer to your question is Katie Price

noonki · 13/02/2009 22:41

Katie price is so not middle class
