to hate the word 'chav' being used to refer to anything people don't like or feel is a bit beneath them?

Honestly, it has to be the most over-used word in the English language (if it is even recognised as a word in the English language). It doesn't mean anything and I am getting really bored of it now. Please everyone that uses this word, stop for the sake of my sanity!

Katie Price is so a chav!

myfunnynametaken · 13/02/2009 22:43

and Victoria Beckham of course

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:45

Her father used to take her to school in his Roller. Chav-bloody-tastic!

random · 13/02/2009 22:47

So anybody who comes from a working class background whos now got money [admittedly not very classy ] is a chav ?

myfunnynametaken · 13/02/2009 22:50

no, they have to have a 42" plasma telly too

I wouldn't say that Victoria Beckham is a chav! Jordan, yes, KK, double yes. Money, or lack of, is not an indicator. Standards and behaviour are.

themoon66 · 13/02/2009 22:52

I aspire to chav-dom. I long for a massive plasma telly and loads of sparkly dresses.

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:52

No - but driving a Roller unless you're taking part in a state occasion with someone driving it for you is pretty chavvy, no?!

Now, a 42" plasma telly in a Roller - there must be a market in chavland for that

SalmonintheLiffey · 13/02/2009 22:53

Doesn't bother me that much. There are trite pidgeon-hole labels that bother me much more.

single mum, benefit scrounger.

chav is a light-hearted, slightly snooty but not really malicious way to describe somebody who likes material stuff.

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 22:54

Up here in Scotland we also have neds - Non-Educated Deliquents.

random · 13/02/2009 22:55

What all the boys and young men? my ds would never wear a baseball cap

PortofinosDHwillDieIfHeForgets · 13/02/2009 22:58

Actually I admire Katie Price in many ways. She's built on what she has. She works bloody hard. She is a brand. She has obviously moved away from the "glamour" days and is trying to move into more family/animal led pursuits amd is mostly making a success of it.

So Katie, why write auto biographies laying bare your sex life/family issues? Why keep feeding OK magazine with salacious shots and nasty comments?

Let KK do all that bollocks and get on with it.

matildax · 13/02/2009 22:59

salmonintheliffy ........ what do you mean?
do you mean that single mums bother you? can i ask why. genuine question.

as for charvas, they are 'pure class' like

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 23:02

I think she means the term 'single mother, benefit scrounger' bothers her more than chav - although I've maybe misunderstood. Easy done - it's past my bedtime!

PussyNoMore · 13/02/2009 23:03

See, that is not my definition of a chav ilovepinot. I agree with salmonintheLiffey's definition.

Victoria is a chav.

PussyNoMore · 13/02/2009 23:05

Yes slagging off single mothers offends me far more.

Thunderduck · 13/02/2009 23:05

My very middle class neighbours teens, and their seemingly endless number of friends are chavs without a doubt. Chav goths. Or ned goths as we call chavs in Scotland.

random · 13/02/2009 23:06

Think my ds must be an emo chav then

paolosgirl · 13/02/2009 23:09

Now, see, Thunderduck - I'm never quite sure what makes someone a ned and what makes them a chav. Neds always seem to have more of a fight in them, whereas chavs are more about attitude and fashion. Plenty of both where I live!

matildax · 13/02/2009 23:09

thanks paolosgirl, i realised that after, i typed it. i'm a bit thick tonight!! time for bed i think.
night xx

Thunderduck · 13/02/2009 23:19

I use ned to mean both I guess. I think of a ned as a Scottish chav.

I hate the word chav too and always feel it says more about the person that uses it than the person they are describing.

Alambil · 14/02/2009 00:09

DS got called a Chav the other day because we live in a council house He's 6.

Chav stands for council house and violent.

DS is NOT violent.

He is, therefore a CHAN.

Council house and NICE

It's such a ridiculously overused word that people have lost it's true meaning (inline with what Ilove said) and use it to mean "stupid person from a different background to mine" or something instead which is where the offence sparks from (like misusing any other word would cause offence)
