For shouting at woman in the supermarket?

I was in the queue at asda earlier having already had a tiring and stressful day. I just wanted to go home and relax. So I put everything on the conveyor belt and as it's going through I remembered something else I needed. I knew I would be able to get out of the house tomorow so I apologised and made a dash to get it. The women behind me in the queue tutted loudly and looked at her watch

Then one of my items didn't have a barcode so they had to phone through and get someone to check it. Woman behind me is getting increasingly angry.

When that was sorted I began having trouble packing as everything was just piling up in the bagging area and our Asda have a new policy of only giving you new bags when they think you can't fit anything else in the ones you have so everything was just falling all over. The woman behind me starts muttering "for gods sake" and shifting her weight from foot to foot, winding herself up.

Then when I went to pay, the card wouldn't work. First two times it said "card not accepted", we wiped it, blew on it etc etc...woman behind is practically exploding...and then finally on the 3rd attempt it accepts the card but I accidently put the wrong pin number in. So took it out, put it in again "card not accepted" tried again and FINALLY it got accepted and accepted the pin ok.

So, I'm just packing the remainders of my shopping and bitch woman behind me marches up, scoops all my stuff up and just throws it all in the trolley and said "times up, soz" my eggs were broken in the process.

A big argument erupted which I'm not proud of but the woman behind the till said she didn't blame me for saying something.

But I HATE confrontation and now feel like shit

Would you have reacted in the same way or should I have let it go to save a row?

YABU, I would have been mega p*ssed off at you too.

TheSmallClanger · 13/02/2009 21:41

Throwing the shopping was out of order, but I think I would have got a little exasperated as well. I hate it when people scuttle off to get forgotten items and flap about with carrier bags.

I don't throw people's shopping, though I occasionally give out my patented "Stink Eye" evil stare, as DD calls it.

Quattro, for the sake of your bp. Ocado. They love to cater to those who live in a time starved environment.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 13/02/2009 21:54

dogma- hilarious post, wish i'd been there!

OP- YANBU. Yes, I know we all get a bit stressed and ratty when people seem to be on a go-slow, but that's tough! They are entitled to go as slow as they see fit, tbh (and I say this as the most impatient, but realistic, person on earth) There is no excuse for aggressive behaviour.

Despite being a member of the time-deprived club, I used to go shopping with my mum who was disabled, unwell and a bit slow, but whose highlight of the week was to be taken to the shops (I know, I know- but she loved the supermarket for some reason!) I got very defensive when people tutted and rolled their eyes- why should she get harassed and rush just to please them?

If you are hacked off and harassed, join a different queue. Or shop online (like I do!)Otherwise accept dithery numpties as part of the great supermarket shopping experience and embrace it!

well said jooly joo

Sorry when I go into a supermarket, I do not allot an hour or any other random amount of time to it. I know from bitter experience that if you pop in for a pint of milk which will take 10 minutes, you will inevitably be there on the day when only 2 tills are open and there is a half hour queue on each one.

If I don't get taken hostage in a supermarket and get forced to stay there for days, I count myself lucky tbh. Alloting an hour to it seems a foolhardy tempting of fate.

Bowbelles · 13/02/2009 22:38

Sorry you've had such a bad day JWTWO. Well done for having a go - I'd've made her wait while you got your eggs replaced - Silly Cow.
Some people are just plain RUDE!

HBLB - well okay, I guess you are lucky to have more time than I do. The supermarket only opens at 8 on Saturdays and the DCs have to be at tennis by 9.45, which means leaving at 9. Fortunately at that time of day, the terminal ditherers are still in bed or trying to find their carkeys so I am mostly okay.

As for shopping online - I DO shop online for most things - just fruit/veg/meat/fish/fresh food/flowers need to be bought fresh. I've found that online shopping invariably results in wilted/last day type stuff being delivered, so I figure I have to buy these fresh.

FfreckleFface · 13/02/2009 22:55

QC, I am with you. Life is too short, BUT online shopping does result in bog standard fresh stuff. So, I do a large online once a month-washing powder, dog food, tins, pasta etc., then I get a weekly organic veg box, and am lucky enough to have a very good butcher and greengrocer in the village, and waitrose in the nearest town. Plus, little ff LOVES the supermarket, and we have the luxury of being able to potter about mid afternoon if we really MUST go...and I would still have been annoyed with the OP.

Divineintervention · 14/02/2009 08:17

QC, don't you have a husband or local tennis lessons? I shudder at the carbon emissions you produce just to get your dcs to tennis.

Quattrocento · 14/02/2009 10:14

the tennis is local - only around 4 miles away. The time between leaving the supermarket (9.00) and tennis starting at 9.45 is not taken up by driving. It is taken up by dashing back from the supermarket, sticking as much stuff away as I can whilst cajoling the DCs to brush their teeth and find their racquets, then setting off again at 9.30.

DH does sometimes do it but I prefer him not to - better that he has Saturday off. He does 4 mornings and 4 evenings in the week, so I reckon he is entitled to as much free time on Saturdays as I can possibly manage.

But thank you for the concern. Even though it was a teensy bit tongue in cheek. Perhaps I should look into offsetting more rigorously?

Miyazaki · 14/02/2009 10:16

Ah well, I'm about to make your busy life a lot easier. Ocado displays a guaranteed use by date (says something like LIFE 6 days) on fresh things including flowers etc, so is exactly the same as buying from a supermarket in terms of use buy dates.

Divineintervention · 14/02/2009 12:50

It was tongue in cheek.... must find a suitable emoticon!! I like the fact that you must have a similar sense of humour to recognise that.
I, too, am a run around the supermarket on a tight schedule (dc4 never sleeps quite long enough) person. I do try not to get annoyed by people who are a little slower as it usually makes my day so much worse. Can't abide rudeness though, cashiers who watch customers struggle, don't say hello or smile and just pull your items through struggling with their own awkwardness because they don't wish to pack for you . Likewise rude customers who treat the cashier like something they've trodden in!

My DH has just taken our people carrier to 'Stagecoach' to pick DCs 1 & 2....oops!
