I am a Guardian reader and hate the Daily

Mail, but FFS must have every fucking thread

I read bash someone's comment they don't

like and accuse them of being a DM reader.

It's getting fucking boring now, think up

something more original please, you're

obviously a bright bunch of women.

Thankyou

Pruners I'm going to buy it and have a read (and see if I get complimented )... I haven't read the NS for many years and even worse...

...I get it a tiny bit mixed up in my head with the Spectator

No Aitch, sorry I'm not being sarcastic. I have been through many experiences in my life and am able to tell the difference between what I am told in any press and what is my own perception of a situation. Can only speak for myself of course.

I think The Daily Mail are trying woo Mumsnet users. It's so transparent. Notice how they've been publishing more articles on mothers and pregnancy recently. This week is unique in that there's the 13yr old father and the octuplets but there seem to be many more articles on motherhood regardless. Why would they be doing so? Because they want the same level of readership and loyalty. The problem? Advertising revenue is down! I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Daily Mail journo on this very thread. It is drivel. Can you recall any witty or erudite film/play/restaurant reviews? Insightful political debate? Even the beauty reviews are lazy. I scan it fast online for precisely the same reason as thumb. The level of outrage in the comments section at the end of every page is pretty amusing though. I challenge you not to find "Going to the dogs" and "disgusting" on most pages. I suspect that the comments might be heavily edited too to keep the demographic just so. Fanatic dross.

SalmonintheLiffey · 14/02/2009 10:58

They have one of the worst articles EVER this morning, bashing Nadia Suleman. It is just the nastiest thing I've ever read.

Yes, why did I buy it? ONly for the fashion magazine.

"It's just a newspaper, I'm sure that we would all agree that we are more than capable of making our own minds up, from our own life experiences, of what is really going on in the world without being unduly influenced by outside forces."

okay, capt. it's just that, as you can see, you seemed to speaks for everyone rather than just yourself.

I enjoy the DM. Every article is designed to arouse fear, fury, horror or disgust so even the driest news story becomes thoroughly titillating. What's not to like?

i have worked for the DM in a past life

it's no more misogynistic than most of fleet street. its just that more people read it, it's a more dominant paper in the market, and it covers more stuff of vaguely female interest than most of the rest (hence why everyone here is madly linking to it while protesting not to read it) and therefore it's very noticeable

possibly if it wasn't for the fact that more or less everyone in a senior position on a national newspaper was a bloke, we would like a lot of their papers more?

WomanInAnAttic · 15/02/2009 08:31

Iorek

If I want to feel alive and shout/gasp/bristle whilst eating my porridge:
I like
the DM for xenophobia
the Guardian for totally misunderstanding the way capitalism actually works, or doesn't work
the Telegraph for their letters page
Alistair Campbell's blog for relentless anti Tory spin.

MerryPonymum · 15/02/2009 08:59

The trouble with the DM is that so many nice but impressionable people read it, like my BF whose politics seem to come straight from its pages. I'm sure if she read a different newspaper she would have soaked up an entirely different set of attitudes! I think it's quite insidiously harmful, in its way, because unlike the Sun etc it's seen as rather a nice thing to do to read it - outside of MN anyway - you can admit to it being your Daily and everyone will assume you are a decent middle-class type - rather refeened.

As for the Grauniad, been a staunch supporter all my life but I do find it increasingly annoying these days. Poor old Grauniad, trying to dumb down a bit to up its flagging sales, I fear, but gradually sitting on the fence more and more in the process. The crossword is still pretty damn good though! oh and the Sudoku and the Saturday quiz - whatever the G does it does have a certain quality about it.
