TheDrunkard2009 · 12/02/2009 14:23

I am a Guardian reader and hate the Daily

Mail, but FFS must have every fucking thread

I read bash someone's comment they don't

like and accuse them of being a DM reader.

It's getting fucking boring now, think up

something more original please, you're

obviously a bright bunch of women.

Thankyou

I don't get the DM bashing on here, seems to be a bit snobby tbh. but then I judge peopl who read the guardian(wannabe MC) the sun(thick) the star(very very very thick) and so on

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 12/02/2009 17:32

Most people are better than me, MrsSMH. I am used to it.

I don't read the DM, but I have to say that every link from MN seems to be to something that makes me feel .

I have friends who get The Sindependent every weekend (The Sun plus The Indy) as they reckon that they balance each other out perfectly.

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 12/02/2009 17:32

It's just a long-standing joke, isn't it? Like fruit shoots and stuff. And the Bat.

pointydog · 12/02/2009 18:04

Before mn, I'd only read the DM on A Friday when my mum left me her copy. Now I read it regularly as there are so many mn links to it.

It has become a cliche on here and as such, is boring now.

Niecie · 12/02/2009 18:11

No YANBU.

It is amazing that since very few of us will admit to reading it, so many people link to it. It has to be the most linked-to paper on MN.

Do people just look at it to find things to get horrified over?

Surely it would be much better if more people ignored it and then it might go away. (Well I can dream, can't I?)

MrsSchmaltzyMerryHenry · 12/02/2009 18:50

Niecie: "Do people just look at it to find things to get horrified over?"

haha!

Actually I think you'll find the people linking to it are probably all DM sales staff

Ivykaty44 · 12/02/2009 18:57

I walked into the court room last year and all my ears were founded and my heart sank - there on the table beside the Judge was a copy of the Daily Mail

I won the case
I am a reverted Daily Mail reader basher

PussyNoMore · 12/02/2009 19:05

Gosh, that was a close shave, I would have assumed a guilty conviction.

Ivykaty44 · 12/02/2009 19:17

My barrister was laughing at half time at my fears over the Judgement going against me as the Judge read the DM

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 12/02/2009 23:32

It's not snobbery.

It's because the DM has a past of endorsing fascism and far right politics.

Find me an example of the Guardian doing THAT and I'll be impressed.

ThumbLoveWitch · 12/02/2009 23:45

I agree with OrmIrian; and disagree with KayHarker that it is no worse than other papers. It seems to be an opinion-former for a large proportion of the predominantly female population and its views are frequently imo unacceptable. It's quasi-intellectual stance is deeply irritating.

However, my best friend reads it. We choose not to discuss the point. I don't "bash" her for reading it.

ThumbLoveWitch · 12/02/2009 23:48

Ivykaty, I was wondering how your ears were founded - it took a few secs to work out what the hell you meant

Ronaldinhio · 12/02/2009 23:51

yabu, that's all, yabu

I just want to add something about my best friend - love her - she is exactly the sort of person who does believe everything that is written in the DM as gospel. (actually, make that did - she has a tendency to check some of the science/health stuff with me first now)
It informs her opinions quite heavily.

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 13/02/2009 13:15

Whenever I see the word "Femail" I cannot help getting images of 1930s black-and-white film showing healthy blonde Madchen in leotards playing leapfrog

MrsSchmaltzyMerryHenry · 13/02/2009 13:32

Oh dear, ManIFeel, it's just a short hop from that image to the 1936 Nazi Germany Olympics...an unfortunate connection bearing in mind the views on multiculturalism of the paper that's being discussed...

MorrisZapp · 13/02/2009 14:50

I loathe and detest the DM with a passion, and will bash it all day long thanks. It's vile. What's not to bash?

I'm a Guardian/ Indie reader and that comes with it's own stereotypes ie lentil muncher which I accept and consider quite amusing.

I'm a modern type Guardianista ie I enjoy the fashion and lifestyle stuff just as much as the news and comment, but my parents are hardcore lentil munchers/ sandal wearers and proud of it.

I'm really interested in this theory that the Guardian hates women? Can anybody shed any light on this beyond one article about motherhood? Cheers.

Ivykaty44 · 13/02/2009 14:54

thumb - sorry about that I have a really problem with typing f for some reason??? Must check post before hitting send

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 13/02/2009 14:57

Exactly my point, MrsS.

If they ever televised the DM, the theme tune would be Wagner arranged for the Bontempi.

auntyspan · 13/02/2009 15:15

Great post Pruners

MrsSchmaltzyMerryHenry · 13/02/2009 15:16

MorrisZapp, there's been some debate over that and the other two baby-related articles which appeared in last Sunday's Observer Woman. Some of us (including me) think it's not so much an example of woman-hating, but more an example of how easy it is to write utter bollocks without even thinking about it and still get paid for it. Others on the discussion think it's a sort of anti-woman thing. To be fair there was an article in the same issue shedding a positive light on pregnancy, but again it was a bit content low (though nowhere near as bad as the opinion pieces).

Interestingly there was a chappie from the Economist (err...perhaps his title is Editor??) on the Today prog this morning who was discussing this exact thing - that he feels one of the reasons The Ec is doing so well at the mo is not just the sheer terror generated by papers such as his over the utter economic balls-up we're all wallowing in, but also because he says other papers, including broadsheets, have cast off that weighty ball and chain called intellect in favour of more puffball pieces, at a time when readers are seeking to actually think.

MrsSchmaltzyMerryHenry · 13/02/2009 15:17

Wagner on Bontempi!!

(I had a bontempi as a child . No Wagner ever stained its keys, though]

donnie · 13/02/2009 15:19

POLISH PEOPLE CAUSE CANCER

( an alleged DM headline at the height of its anti Polish racist period )

chisigirl · 13/02/2009 15:21

The Mail and Guardian come joint top place on my list of most annoying newspapers!

The Mail for being right wing, near-fascist, immigrant-bashing and splutteringly self-righteous.

The Guardian for being sanctimonious and preachy.
