To feel upset at this being left on my answerphone by the school?

I received an answerphone message this afternoon from dd's school to let me know she was unwell and needed picking up. At the end of the recorded message, the teaching assistant obviously thinks the receiver has been replaced and says, 'that's a difficult woman'. I know it's difficult to judge without actually hearing it, but the comment was obviously made about me.

I am really upset, particularly as I had thought we had a very good relationship with the school, though it would appear that I'm wrong. The head teacher has called and said that he has spoken to the members of staff concerned and their story is that they said 'it's a difficult one', referring to my daughter's current problem with leaving mum in the morning. My recording is clear as a bell - the word used is definitely 'woman' and not 'one'. The tone in the voice changes, it is very clearly an unpleasant comment. The head teacher is quick to point out how professional his staff are and that they would never do this, yet I have this unpleasant comment on my answer 'phone! I have left it with him, stating that I am unhappy with the way things stand and would like an apology. Or is one supposed to accept this?

I insist on my kids' homework being marked at least once a term.

It should be marked once a fortnight.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 10/02/2009 23:00

Get someone else who knows you well to listen to it and confirm what you think it says to you.

Too often our brains hear what we think people say and it's almost always negative as people tend to think much worse of themselves than others do about them.

If it definitely says 100% then I would tell the Head that the recording is clear just for his information. And then I would leave it.

BoffinMum · 10/02/2009 23:01

I know Twinset, that place bloody drives me nuts, I can tell you. I am resigned to seeing it mainly as free childcare now.

piratecat · 10/02/2009 23:02

i'd def be upset if it clearly said 'dificult woman'and i knew for sure it was about me.

I might also think, hmm, but maybe it wasn't directed at me.

i would be pissed off tho, if the ta was fibbin.

are you really really sure it was woman and not one. bcuase i have sat here and said it a few times, and those two words sound pretty similar. esp in different accents, or intonations?

you may have got a bit paranoid, becuase you are senstive about your dc and the settling in thing?

cornsilk · 10/02/2009 23:02

Amen Boffin. Why shouldn't mums be pushy? Teachers/TAs aren't doing voluntary work.

twinsetandpearls · 10/02/2009 23:04

As a teacher I expect a lot from dd teachers and say if I am not happy. I know how hard I work because I am dedicated and expect the same of her teachers.

BoffinMum · 10/02/2009 23:04

Twinset, while you're on, do you know what they did in their RE books recently in Year 6??

As part of the SEAL programme they brainstormed swear words, then the teacher wrote them up on the whiteboard, then they copied them down in their RE books. As you can imagine the rest of the day was spent in a kind of whole class Tourette's scenario with them calling out new swear words the whole time.

I ask you. DS1 was not impressed and cannot wait to go up to secondary school.

moondog · 10/02/2009 23:05

Most teachers are lazy sloppy fuckers.

twinsetandpearls · 10/02/2009 23:06

I would never get kids to write swear words in there books but sometimes certain choice words come up in a discussion if it is relevant. But I have control over my classes and such words would only be said at the appropriate time.

BoffinMum · 10/02/2009 23:06

Not necessarily Moondog, but sometimes.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 10/02/2009 23:06

sweeping generalisation time

twinsetandpearls · 10/02/2009 23:07

Twinset rolls her eyes at moondog and gets back to supping her wine to celebrate the fact that she has her first weeknight free of marking in ages.

BoffinMum · 10/02/2009 23:07

I wish you were teaching him Twinset.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 10/02/2009 23:07

PMSL at Boffinmum's sweary anecdote.

God, why didn't you tell the Daily Mail? They would have made such a delicious fuss about it!

twinsetandpearls · 10/02/2009 23:07

Thanks Boffin.

edam · 10/02/2009 23:08

Boffin, that reminds me, had to look online for info about the Tower of London for ds's homework. Blasted website mentioned 'William the Bastard' (what the Conqueror was actually called by his contemporaries. I didn't know whether to be proud that a five-year-old could read and sound out 'bastard' (correctly!) or horrified that he might repeat it!

SlartyBartFast · 10/02/2009 23:08

or even Take a Break
and they pay!!!

twinsetandpearls · 10/02/2009 23:08

I dont know if you would have said that today when I muttered my own choice words under my breath trying to get my laptop to connect to my whiteboard.

edam · 10/02/2009 23:15

Yet another reason why I'd never make a teacher. Never being able to say 'bugger' when I dropped something on my foot!

twinsetandpearls · 10/02/2009 23:16

lol edam, I make a grunting sort of noise, they know it means "Miss wants to shout OH FUCK" at the top of her voice and they stay clear.

bigeyes · 10/02/2009 23:22

Not rad other posts

This is just NOT ACCEPTABLE dont be fobbed off - speak to the head again and be adamant and if needed to get your point across say something like 'respectfully 'Name' it is clear on the answer machine tape, you are welcome to hear it or yourself' They cant argue with this.

Its terrible - but for you - remeber this just somones opinion of you that probably doesnt know you very well as a person. If necessary take it to the governors and contact the LEA they all have a complaints procedure. Who the blardy ell are they to sit in judgement on you? feckless personms

edam · 10/02/2009 23:23

You've got them well trained!

bigeyes · 10/02/2009 23:28

Oh my twinset - I wished that worked for me
