...making declarations along the lines of "I see no need to let baby sleep in our bedroom, surely he/she can sleep in their own bedroom from day one?"

My friend was due to give birth in a few weeks and had popped round one evening as I was trying to settle an overtired, teething 11 month old dd. She sweetly says, "Can you not just turn the light off and put a mobile on so she will go to sleep?" Other gems include, " Im not going to use a dummy" and " She sleeps in your bed???" roll on 3 months.....!

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 27/01/2009 20:43

aw, it's all part of the experience!

It's good for a laugh in later years though.

"remember when we said we'd ..../we'd never.....?"
followed by GALES of (slightly hysterical) laughter and an almost imperceptible twich of an eyelid.

Surfermum · 27/01/2009 20:47

I remember looking at dd when she was just a few weeks old and fast asleep and saying "I can't ever imagine shouting at her or telling her off".

My mum and friend roared, looked at each other, rolled their eyes and said "oh you will".

I haven't though and she's 5 .

dh's and mine are;

'Do you think he's overstimulated?' (said in all total seriousness when I was filming a 30 second bit)

and the infamous

'LINE?????? WHAT FUCKING LINE??????'
a huge argument we had over filling the sterilizer up to the appropriate mark. I hadn't realised there was a line...

Whilst on maternity leave I was going to become a domestic goddess, decorate the house and catch up on my post grad diploma after getting really behind while I was pregnant. I go back to work in 8 weeks wondering when the feck I'm going to have time to tidy the house and catch up on about a year and half's studying.

Perhaps if I hadn't spent this evening skiving on MN I might be marginally further forward.

DH currently cleaning kitchen and making bottles so I can fit a few hours study in . Don't tell him will you?

Oh, and I was never going to be one of those parents who was late for everything. At the w/e we were two hours late picking up friends for a weekend away.

bitofadramaqueen · 27/01/2009 20:59

muppetgirl I just spat out my tea at the sterilizer row. Same here!

Wolfcub · 27/01/2009 21:10

we were convinced that because we were both insomniacs having a baby would be easy, sleepless nights no problem - how wrong we were

Technofairy · 27/01/2009 21:10

Blimey, even 21 years on I'm still cringing!

I did the dummy thing too - no child of mine etc etc. Until he was screaming the ward down, keeping everyone else awake after hours of being grumpy and just wouldn't settle. The midwife produced one (which of course made it alright!) and the peace was immediate. Sleeping baby minutes later. I could have kissed her.

I also breastfed, or tried to, for far too long when my milk was clearly not enough. A visit from my nursing sister friend, who promptly went out to buy some formula saved my sanity and my boy's empty tummy. After his first bottle he slept for hours and we never looked back. I don't think four weeks of breastmilk is too bad though.

Re the gender stereotyping though, this still makes me laugh. My brother and his wife were a bit new age hippy. My niece would have no girl specific toys or clothes, and would not conform to society's expectations. No pink, dolls, frills etc! The first pictures of her that we received show her in a lovely purple and green tie dye baby grow. Roll forward ten years and she is a proper girlie girl. Pink, glitter, sparkly, Barbie, High School Musical etc etc.

Mind you we never allowed our DS to have toy guns when he was small. Then someone bought him some sticklebricks and the first thing he did was to make a gun and shoot my Mum with it, complete with sound effects.

They are what they are!

My SIL really upset me on Christmas Day as we had to pick her up to go to other SIL and it took her until after 3pm to get her one 5yr old ready. I was stuck in a car (I?m pregnant) for about 5hrs+ on Christmas day. When I said I was hungry and cramped I was told I shouldn?t say that!!!!! Do you think IBU?
