AIBU to loathe the huge flatscreen TV now sitting in my living room?

Our old, small, perfectly adequate TV was broken when the two year old threw his Thomas train at it.

This obviously provided dh with the perfect excuse to go out and buy some stupid, enormous flatscreen monstrosity which is now balefully sitting in the living room and pissing me off.

It just looks, there is no other word for it, common. And I just hate it.

When DH is out, I may load the kid up with the rest of his train collection and let him at it....

All of this reminds me of the reason why FIL divorced MIL - her liking of "working class entertainments". And no I'm not kidding.

Poppycake · 21/01/2009 11:51

we've noticed how we used to live in a little house with nice things, now we live in a big house with crappy things (big mortgage = no spare cash) so I'm guessing that we've moved "up-class" by getting into a bigger house in a bigger area. Thus our piddly TV would make us MC.

So the people who have lived in our road longer, no big mortgage = more spare cash to spend on TVs and wiis and other electronic gadgets would be the aristocracy I guess.

I shall remember this come the revolution...

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/01/2009 11:59

Well I reckon I'm going to chuck a train at the old TV and get a new one. So sitting room is about 15'x15' - do I get a 32" or a 37" TV. I want to be able to bring the home and see what they look like in situ....

No chocolatedot, you are misinformed. The large shooting estates have been bought up by the Arab Sheiks and Russian oligarchs who invite the dispossessed aristocracy and the movers and shakers to shooting parties in order to ingratiate themselves with established British society.

FGS, I'm not continuing with this but siffice to say it simply isn't the case. Yes elements of shooting have changed enormously over the years and yes many are now run on a commercial basis. Notwithstanding this, the traditional shooting scene remains alive and kicking with the most important estates still in the hands of the landowners who've owned them for generations. But you know what? - it really doesn't matter.

snort you are seriously having an argument about shooting parties LOL

"estabilished British society" ha ha ha

WilyWombat · 21/01/2009 12:20

Without a doubt shooting has been embraced lesser mortals with money (think Madonna in her English phase)

But I live in a reAsonably affluent part of the country and it is still alive and kicking with the upper class too so I guess you are both right to an extent

Fable · 21/01/2009 12:23

I would hate to be a guest in some peoples houses on this thread. With their tiny tellies and fridges, old withered furniture, how grim!

popedaftpunkII · 21/01/2009 12:26

size isn't everything fable...

mm22bys · 21/01/2009 12:28

I don't invite MY friends round to watch TV Fable...is that what you expect when you're invited?

smurfgirl · 21/01/2009 12:30

We have a 32 inch flatscreen attatched to our wardrobe I hate hate hate it but DH loooooooves it.
Every woman who visits the house and sees it is
Every man who visits the house and sees it is

Fable · 21/01/2009 12:32

Dont you mm22bys? You never have a girly night where you watch old films?

And my point was that you have to complimentry when you visit friends houses. I would struggle to complient a house with a 1950's telly

WilyWombat · 21/01/2009 12:33

LOL fable

It is ultimately about personal taste though isnt it?

I do struggle with someone I know who spent a fortune on an enormous tv but then spends ages telling me how hard it is to make ends meet...I guess everyones priorities are different id rather have a smaller tv owned outright and no debt, others would rather have the largest, glossiest, top of the range everything and be in debt for it all.

Good point Wily

And for the record we don't have a humongous TV

TheLadyEvenstar · 21/01/2009 12:41

Not read all of this thread but i have a 46" flat screen tv which is wall mounted but then i do have a big living room. And for the record I am not common or a chav lol I just wanted it so i bought it.

Flibbertyjibbet · 21/01/2009 12:55

Recently I was becoming rather envious of my lovely friend's new huge house when she was showing me round.
Then we entered the lounge and I saw the BIGGEST TELLY ever, wall mounted on the wall above the fire place. Urgh chavvy I thought. No to mention the crick she'll get in her neck from looking up to watch it.

So I asked if the fire was just ornamental with the telly being over it.

No, we bought that one specifically because its HEAT PROOF.

Sorry but thats just too chavtastic for me. We have a 32" telly which I only bought cos my 15 year old one died last year. I do like the space saving aspect of the flat screen but we keep ours on a low cabinet at a viewing level that suits my neck when I am slouched on the sofa (or should I say settee? Couch?? Which one is old money???)

chocolatedot · 21/01/2009 12:59

Definitely sofa my dear

Lauriefairycake · 21/01/2009 13:00

a heat proof tv

ffs

Marthasmama · 21/01/2009 13:01

'eclectic' and 'retro' exactly or "design classic" LOL do you remember when TVs were made out of wood?

I struggle with the whole TV in the bathroom thing...why the hell would I want a TV in my bathroom?
