AIBU to loathe the huge flatscreen TV now sitting in my living room?

Our old, small, perfectly adequate TV was broken when the two year old threw his Thomas train at it.

This obviously provided dh with the perfect excuse to go out and buy some stupid, enormous flatscreen monstrosity which is now balefully sitting in the living room and pissing me off.

It just looks, there is no other word for it, common. And I just hate it.

When DH is out, I may load the kid up with the rest of his train collection and let him at it....

no, i hate ours too, we were given it as well so cant complain too much. i wanted a nice little one to sit in the corner as we only have a very small front room and looks out of place.
men and their bloody toys....

So, big tellys and fridges are common.

Anything else I should know about to prevent me committing total social suicide?

loupiots · 20/01/2009 21:01

Oops my bad. Apparently is 'only' 37".
FGS, someone pass me some of that White Diamond...

I think ours is about 21 inches. It is fine (we used to have a 14 inch one until DH decided we needed a silver one)

LaDiDaDi · 20/01/2009 21:02

Dp got a 50" one last year. I was horrified at first....

...but now I LOVE it , don't tell him that of course .

I'm done for Hecate, big tv plus excesive emoticon use. DD may as well bypass a sink school and go straight to the bedsit..

mm22bys · 20/01/2009 21:03

I can't believe you all complaining about having too big TVs.

Get rid of them then, and join the real world who have real problems.

YABU.

lovelysongbirdie · 20/01/2009 21:04

tbh all tvs are a bit common, if your that upper class maybe you should only have books

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 20/01/2009 21:05

Its too cold out in this social wilderness, I am off to skulk on my House of Leather sofa and talk on my I-Phone.

MillyR · 20/01/2009 21:07

LSITD are iphones considered wrong as well?

mm22bys · 20/01/2009 21:09

It's common too to pretend to be complaining about something but in reality you are actually quite pleased with yourself (and the TV in this case) and you feel the need to show off about it....

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 20/01/2009 21:09

Milly - heaven knows, you are asking someone who has a BIG telly and an 'aspirational' fridge.

chancelloroftheexCHEQUERS · 20/01/2009 21:10

Loving it that you are talking about 'aspirational' (my quotation) fridges now!

mrsseanbean · 20/01/2009 21:10

YANBU. They look dreaful.

lovelysongbirdie · 20/01/2009 21:10

i also love those fridges esp if they have ice dispensers, i'd love one of those and big range cookers

Moondancer · 20/01/2009 21:10

Light - as well as the big tv and fridge please dont tell me that you also have the bog standard chocolate leather sofa(s), in a coffee and cream themed living room. If you have then im afraid theres no hope!

MillyR · 20/01/2009 21:11

I have to admit that I am currently watching a film on one of those home cinema projector things.

Moondancer · 20/01/2009 21:13

Has anyone got one of those american-style fridge freezer thingies with a tv included on them?????

Marthasmama · 20/01/2009 21:15

DH is reading over my shoulder and said...'oooo if I was on Dadsnet' so I said, 'ah go on then I'll write what you think'. This is DH's opinion not mine so throw things at him not me....ready....

"It is obviously a bloke thing, all you women don't know what you're on about. I bought a lovely 50inch plasma, not because I'm common (he is though), but because I love cinema. I didn't buy one to watch Eastenders and all that shit. Oh and my living room is massive. Now I'm going to go back to that other thread and look at Madonna's fanjo again."

  • well, I say!
CoffeeAndCarrotCake · 20/01/2009 21:16

Aspirational fridge. Check.
Whopping ridiculous TV (tuned to Top Gear 98% of the time). Check.
How about pretentious built in coffee machine? Check.
Am I a chav? Am I? Whoo hoo - alcopops here I come!

littleducks · 20/01/2009 21:19

oh dear god, my dh is a bit tv obsessed and gets all narky when i snort and say watching films and faffing about rewiring is not a proper hobby

HandleMeCarefully · 20/01/2009 21:20

"It just looks, there is no other word for it, common"

Snort! yes YABU in defining it as common (I know a great many quite refined people with large screen tv contrary to MN received wisdom), but YANBU in disliking it...although I suspect that it is a matter of growing accustomed to it

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 20/01/2009 21:24
