AIBU to loathe the huge flatscreen TV now sitting in my living room?

Our old, small, perfectly adequate TV was broken when the two year old threw his Thomas train at it.

This obviously provided dh with the perfect excuse to go out and buy some stupid, enormous flatscreen monstrosity which is now balefully sitting in the living room and pissing me off.

It just looks, there is no other word for it, common. And I just hate it.

When DH is out, I may load the kid up with the rest of his train collection and let him at it....

My mum has one set into the wall of her loo! (Although she was not responsible for putting it there!) Can't wait to tell her she's a chav - she'll be delighted!

Moondancer · 20/01/2009 21:43

Light - you are beyond redemption! Lol!

PoloPlayingMummy · 20/01/2009 21:47

YANBU. I can't stand them either.

What is it about men and size?!

Moondancer · 20/01/2009 21:49

PPM - I have my own theory on this. Suspect its similar to yours!

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 20/01/2009 21:57

Oh, moon - now I am really worried. I am frantically looking around my house wondering what other 'faux pas' I may have inadvertently made!

Rollmops · 20/01/2009 22:13

DH bought a huge telly just before the olympics however watching the games in HD was fantastic. I like watching the rugby on a large screen, it must be something to do with those broad shoulders

I reckon that all the moaners on this board will suddenly clam up when Wimbledon is on Anyway, what would you rather your DHs bought themselves as a treat, a drum kit ?

Thinks...... How many pairs of Jimmy Choos are considered vulgar

SlackSally · 21/01/2009 09:28

The biggest TV Argos sell is 52".

The biggest TV John Lewis sell is 55".

Ergo, they cannot be inherently common.

Another thought, about the 'they're on benefits, but they have a huge TV' brigade: if you had very little money, and couldn't afford to go to restaurants/cinema/theatre/holiday, it would actually make quite good financial sense to spend a lot on a one off payment that would provide (almost) free entertainment indefinitely.

chocolatedot · 21/01/2009 09:37

What on earth do you mean by "Stupid aspirational american style fridges" Chancellor? It is the European fridge which is stupidly small. America and Australia and many other countries have had double fridges as the norm since the 70's.

I have no idea how anybody who cooks from scratch every day for a family of 4 or more copes with the ridiculously small fridges that used to be the norm here. They must either shop very frequently or keep things in cupboards that really should be in a fridge.

popedaftpunkII · 21/01/2009 09:39

yanbu...big = naff in the tv world.

chocolatedot · 21/01/2009 09:49

I think whether or not a big TV is "common" or not depends on its setting. If it's crammed into a small room and as a result dominates it completely, it's pretty naff If however, it sits in a largish room and is not the focal point or it's in a home cinema type room, it's fine.

Wizzska · 21/01/2009 09:54

I felt the same way when we got ours. I didn't want a massive telly. Had to fight to stop DH putting it on the wall above the fireplace. I refused to have the telly being the most prominent thing in the room.

BonsoirAnna · 21/01/2009 09:56

YANBU. Huge TVs look vile.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/01/2009 09:57

There is a formula I read somewhere which tells you what size TV you should get depending on how far away from it you will be sitting. Men just seem to go for the biggest size they can fit in.

I really want a new flat, widescreen TV as our TV is 14 years old. DH says I have to wait till it breaks.

Wizzska · 21/01/2009 09:58

Having said that, I am not one although I have known people who put a piece of carpet over their telly to hide it and only use it for open university videos. Also similar ones who have hand cut doilies blu tacked over the screen to show how rarely the thing is used. Have always had a quiet snigger to myself about that sort of thing.

popedaftpunkII · 21/01/2009 10:01

big tv's will always have an image problem....probably due to pubs having them.

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 21/01/2009 10:06

I'm with Hecate et al. We have a 42" plasma and I bloody love it, watching films on little tellies just isn't the same effect. I don't have a massive fridge/freezer though. Does that let me off?

HarlotOTara · 21/01/2009 10:06

YANBU I agree - I hate TVs being the focal point in a room although also hate TV cabinets which probably don't exist any more. I do think men have a problem with size . My dh always gets the Christmas tree which is always too big and every year we argue about it (next year I am choosing it)

mm22bys · 21/01/2009 10:07

To me, they say that either the person spends way too much time watching tv so for some reason needs to have a huge one (opposite to your friends wizz), or that you don't have much money so feel to need to treat yourself on something that is only a one-off payment.

We don't have a huge flatscreen TV, don't have the time or space, and frankly? We have more noble financial priorities (eg on our children) than spending bucketloads of a piece of c**p to have to keep up with the Joneses.

But then we do spend relative bucketloads on overseas holidays so different strokes for different folks.

harleyd · 21/01/2009 10:08

i bought a 34" tv four years ago, which didnt look so big in the shop, but was waaaay too big in my living room, thankfully it blew up before xmas and i now have a little cute 22" flatscreen

BonsoirAnna · 21/01/2009 10:08

Men IME are absolutely crap at judging proportions in living spaces - they want TVs and Xmas trees that are far too big for the space available and they can't organise furniture in such a way that you can actually circulate in a room. It's odd, because I would have thought that would have been a "spatial skill" in the same way as parking (which men are known on average to be better at than women). But no.

mm22bys · 21/01/2009 10:13

Oh just checked on John Lewis website - cheaper than I thought they were - 37 inch one for £529 (although that would be too small for many of you I bet....)

For that money we could get almost 5 one-hour physiotherapy sessions.....

VinegarTits · 21/01/2009 10:21

I have a 42" plasma and a huge American stylee fridge, i went on a spending spree when i was pg (i blame the hormones )

How did you lot miss this

YABU.
I don't understand how a telly can look common.
Is it wearing a shell suit?

Its got to be the quote of the day
