Why oh why do I hate text speak sooo much?

AIBU?

It drives me mad...I can't do it myself and it takes me 10 times longer to read text speak than a normal text/e-mail etc.

I just want to tell the person to type/spell peoperly (but I don't because I am polite )

I have 2 friends, one in her 30's and one in her 40's who both text speak. It truly doesn't bother me if teenagers do it...they are teenagers, they are meant to talk funny...but 30 and 40 year olds!!!!

Oh and while I'm about it, capital letters at the beginning of sentences...what's wrong with that?

I have a friend who texs like that. It's all der and dat arrgghhh!! WTF is that all about??

psychomum5 · 17/01/2009 14:31

You are so not being unreasonable.....I also hate it too!

Also hate the 'shouting' speak, when they just do capitals. Mind you, my Aunt does that and I am stunned that she can actually text!! .

Marthasmama · 17/01/2009 14:32

I hate it too. It is impossible to read and appears to be sneeking into other arenas too. I don't mind if it stays on the mobile phones of teenagers, but when it creeps into everyday writing....Grrr! I sometimes had to read pages of transcripts of text messages as part of my job and it took forever. I would often have to ask what things meant.

psychomum5 · 17/01/2009 14:34

I hate text speak here too, and shouting, and lots of other stuff!

Problem is, the other stuff I do, so cannot moan about it.

PavlovtheCat · 17/01/2009 14:34

I am not a fan of text speak. I really annoy a lot of people I think, as I send a full text 'Hope you are all doing ok, what time are you coming over this evening? ' rather than 'hope ur gd, wot time u comin ova dis eve?'

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:35

Ooh I'm gald I'm not the only one!

I knew you would hate it Psycho, we only send proper texts to each other! It's because I had an e-mail from the 30ish year old friend this morning and it took forever to read. Lovely lady, intelligent, but she uses flaming text speak. He name also ends in an 'er' but she signs her name with an 'a' at the end. What is that all about????

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:37

But text speak surely takes longer to type as you'd have to work out what meant what before you typed it. Wouldn't you???

I just tried to do some text speak on here and I can't!!

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 17/01/2009 14:37

There is nothing wrong with sending a full text. I have even started a new text because I run out of space and refuse to use text speak. I'd probably get it wrong anyway! I'm not very down wit da kids, but then I never was!

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:38

Pavlov, I always send full texts too

mm22bys · 17/01/2009 14:39

I hate it too, didn't it start because initially it was very expensive to send texts? They're so cheap now, there really is no excuse, and it does looks, sound, read so daft!

tootyflooty · 17/01/2009 14:40

I text full sentences including punctuation as it doesn't always make sence if you don't add commas etc. I have to confess to not always using capitals. With predictive texts I am mightily speedy. I do worry at my ds1 (17)use of text language as it does make me think can they actually spell!!!!

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:40

We've had text messages sent to the home phone (v. funny mechanical lady repeating the text) I wonder if she could read text speak if it was sent to the home phone.

psychomum5 · 17/01/2009 14:40

martha......if I need to cram in a text, I miss the spaces out between the . and the next sentence IYGWIM.

makes it a bit squished, but I still have my whole words in there

NimChimpsky · 17/01/2009 14:41

My MIL does it.

She sends 'wot r u doin 2moro cos we r in dat area'.

I reply 'I don't understand'.

She sends the same text to dh.

He replies 'I don't understand'.

She phones and expresses herself perfectly in her clipped middle class tones.

Why does she do it? Why? Why? I don't want a phone that plays music and takes photos, I want one that blocks txt spk.

I don't know, but I hate it as well. It is unnecessary. Also I really fear people are losing the ability to communicate properly. The next generation will be studying Shakespeare's play Hmlt and quoting "wll lk @ u nw, hw an unwthy thng u mk of me. U wld play upn me...."

I honestly don't know what is wrong with typing properly.

NimChimpsky · 17/01/2009 14:42

And 20yr old sil, I honestly can't understand her texts. She does some extreme form of text speak where each word only has 2 letters and a number. It makes my brain hum in pain.

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:43

Ah I can't be bothered, it's taking me too long to figure out what to type...I'm not that bored frankly!

Might get my teenage son to rewrite Hamlet in text speak now!!

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 17/01/2009 14:45

Why don't you text your home phone saying...."hw u doin?"

see if it works

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:47

Actually Nim, now you say that my MIL does too! She doesn't often text to be fair, but if she does, she text speaks!! Again a lovely well spoken middle class lady!!

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:47
