Why oh why do I hate text speak sooo much?

AIBU?

It drives me mad...I can't do it myself and it takes me 10 times longer to read text speak than a normal text/e-mail etc.

I just want to tell the person to type/spell peoperly (but I don't because I am polite )

I have 2 friends, one in her 30's and one in her 40's who both text speak. It truly doesn't bother me if teenagers do it...they are teenagers, they are meant to talk funny...but 30 and 40 year olds!!!!

Oh and while I'm about it, capital letters at the beginning of sentences...what's wrong with that?

I have noticed it creeping into MN a lot recently.

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 14:52

DH did this the other week actually, not in text speak, but kept sending daft messages to his mums, sisters and my sisters house phones because we'd had a text to our phone sent accidently from DS's friend....he confused a lot of people that day

i never use caps when typing.
except when i am SHOUTING AT SOMEONE.

i don't think there's anthing wrong with it.
i do use caps in formal situations of course.

i prefer the was it looks, is that weird?
also, i hate it when people don't use appropriate caps when physically writing. i just don't feel the same about typing.

end of boring message.

I'm convinced that my mother thinks that she is charged per character in her texts. It is beyond embarrassing to read such utter tripe from her when she is the woman who taught me to speak, read and write correctly.

duchesse · 17/01/2009 16:30

Knickers- the really funny thing is that your transcription of your txt spk is hardly longer than the original!

deste · 17/01/2009 18:05

I also hate text speak. I teach adults to read and write. I must admit for years my texts had no capitals but that was because I didn't know how to put them in.

mumeeee · 17/01/2009 18:07

YANBU. I don't like it and always text in full sentances. My Mum aged 79 texts in text speak! DD2 19 doesn't like text speak and she often tells her older sister to text properly!

unfitmother · 17/01/2009 18:07

I don't mind it on text messages but hate it on MN.

Squirdle · 17/01/2009 19:17

Knickers, I thought you were trying to type with a Yorkshire accent then......Aim going t poob...ah forget it

And Duchesse is right, you proper spelling is only a little shorter than the text How long did it take you to type the first one? Bet it was longer than the second...

I type as I speak (which is probably why my posts are always a little jumbled and rambly)

I loathe and detest text speak. My sister's emails and texts make my head hurt.

The only thing that I hate more (in a language and communication context, obviously...I have lots more things that I hate ) that txt spk is use of 'lol'. I know that I am probably in the minority with this one, and wouldn't like to offend, but bloody hell it makes me want to scream. LOL at the end of every sentence, on mumsnet, on Facebook...this is what will finally make my head explode!

I might just take myself to pedants corner now...

BouncingTurtle · 18/01/2009 17:14

DH's aunty does this to me... it drives me bonkers.

I am so tempted to reject messages on freecycle (I'm a mod)which are written in text speak!

Squirdle · 18/01/2009 20:31

Oooh said friend is now using 'z's instead of 's's......it's making me cringe!!!!
